One of Eng patch translator here, the game still getting recognition after all these years make me feel worth joining the patch team. Also, if anyone is contemplating to create a whole new Touhoumon game, contact me and our team. I have a whole bunch of ideas to not to make it look too Pokemon-ish to be DMCA'd by Nintendo Ninjas. (It's anyone's game now, as their original lead dev went missing long ago.) (Fun fact: I partially got introduced to Touhou with GBA Pokemon hack-era Touhoumon, when I was obsessed with Pokemon hacks. I still remember my Marisa in 1.8.)

Heads up that there’s a fanmade expansion mod in the works right now since it doesn’t look like the game will be updated by the devs anytime soon. The added contents planned so far will be: -Touhou 16 puppets -Touhou 16.5 puppets -Touhou 17 puppets -Lotus Eaters puppets (Just Miyoi) -Touhou 17.5 puppets (after whenever the game releases) -Touhou 18 puppets (same as above) -Fangame puppets (from FMW for example) -Extra story content (with new map areas inspired in TH16 and 17 included) -Changes to some battles in the main story -More items -More moves -More trainers to face in the human village tournament -New costumes for the already existing puppets that replace the alternate color costumes The mod isn’t at all finished yet but it’s being actively worked on and progressing smoothly as far as I know. There’s already a preview version of it available that contains new puppets from TH16, TH16.5 and 17 but everything in that version is subject to change.

What I really like about Puppet Dance Performance is that it shows a dynamic world. A lot of the other Touhoumon games, from what I've seen, mostly just past Touhou mons into Pokemon regions without really changing the plot or even dialogue. Here, the focus is in Gensokyo, creating a unique setting for the story. Moreover, we get to see how people are adjusting to the arrival of the puppets.

I really enjoyed Puppet Dance Performance as it basically combined my two favorite franchises, Touhou and Pokemon, and did a damn good job with it too. The art and spritework are both amazing, as is the OST, showing that a lot of effort was put into this game. I do feel that the difficulty could be a bit unbalanced sometimes, with there being a few sudden difficult battles that kinda come out of nowhere in a game that I personally think is on the easier side. The different mechanics can also take some time getting used to for beginners since they are different from what one would expect of a normal Pokemon game. I haven't replayed it after beating it the first time around, so it may be a fun thing to go back to sometime.
@Surnist3 жыл бұрын
It's sort of comedic that I ended up playing the game as soon as the video was released. But it's true that Puppet Dance Performance is a damn good game. Though it's a little too much on the easy side due to the Exp.Share being on at all times, which is a thing that made Pokémon X & Y too easy in the first place. Though one good thing is that the game keeps getting some updates through the community.
@BK-Vatras3 жыл бұрын
I haven't played a ton of fangames yet, but right now, this is by far my favorite, and you did a pretty good job getting across why. It streamlines just about every minor annoyance I have with Pokemon, so putting together a team isn't a chore and theory-crafted strategies can actually be put into practice. A shame that it lacks a lot of in-game information, though, even if the wiki alleviates that issue. I still don't like when a game almost forces you to rely on outside resources for useful info, but in this case, I've been having too much fun to care. Plus, with how I've been playing, I'd probably end up using the wiki a ton regardless... I didn't go in with any team in mind. I just seal everything I come across, to a certain point, (by the 8th Koakuma, you start to run out of nicknames...) and swap my team around pretty frequently. The random stat ranks make it so you never really know what a puppet will bring; whether they'll have any thing good, or what those good stats will be. Thankfully, since every puppet has 3 styles they can go for, there should almost always be at least one that emphasizes the right stats for them. I'm not actually too far into the game yet, having only just went back down Youkai Mountain after reaching the Moriya Shrine, but I currently have 19 puppets over level 30 and ready to be used, with several other potentials on the bench. Usually have my starter, plus 2-3 other usable puppets, while the remaining slots are for those still growing. Also have a personal rule to fight each important battle with an equal number of (usable) puppets to them, and while I'm a bit under-leveled for that, I have so many options that putting together a team to counter them is fun on it's own, and eventually succeeding is oh, so sweet... I'd also love to gush about the art and music, but this comment is too long. Those aspects speak for themselves, anyway. Though, I will say that the area themes deserve just as much love as the battle themes, at least to me. To anyone who hasn't played this game yet, I highly recommend it. The Akyuu rating is definately justified, but if you at least have a baseline level of Touhou knowledge, are curious to learn more, and enjoy Pokemon, then I'd still give it a try. (By the way, you seem like you're getting more comfortable with this, and the general video quality is still steadily increasing. Keep up that hard work.)

From my understanding, FocasLens is mainly Hemogurobin's doing, so he aint just the artist, but also the main dev, (if not the only one). Good news! A future update to the expansion is being worked on (not too much progress yet since it's a solo endeavor) but puppets are indeed getting rebalanced with live community feedback. And yes, balanced for competitive play specifically. Unlike in Pokemon where Dudunspacre is in NU while Lando-T is in OU, the devs are taking netplay players' opinions and suggestions to make someone like Rinnosuke or Mugetsu be on par with Suwako or Yugen Magan. Also yes, Magan is in the equivalent of OU tier. Someone's also making a Pokemon Showdown version of TPDP (still a WIP but playable) but that's a separate thing entirely.

One thing I like about this game is how it’s actually pretty balanced. In Pokémon, many Pokémon are straight-up better than others, and some are super overpowered legendaries. So competitive matches often have the same Pokémon seen over and over. In Touhou puppet dance performance, legendaries don’t exist. Well, some puppets have higher base stat totals, but not to the extent of Pokémon. The stronger puppets tend to not have as good abilities to compensate as well. The cost mechanic also helps balance this, since higher cost puppets take longer to level up, and certain moves are more effective against higher-costing puppets. The styles mechanic can also help. Having four styles means that if one style of your favorite character you aren’t a fan of, more than likely at least one of them will be one you like.

While it's kind of a bummer that you can't turn off Exp. Share, aleast this game is balanced around it. Seriously. By the time you reach Eientei, your team would be around their early 20s, when the local boss in the area (Fujiwara no Mokou) has a team that has their levels around their late 20s (Level 28-30), giving you no choice but grind aganist the local wild puppets, which are level 19 at most. (This was migiated on Shard of dreams, where it's now Level 26-28, still a lot to grind, but better compared to before.)
@gypsysprite48243 жыл бұрын
9:50-ish: so a good chunk of the reason you can end up so far ahead of everything in Shard of Dreams is that the level curve for SoD is actually quite a bit lower than in base game to accomodate the extensive postgame SoD adds. if memory serves, you end up alot less ahead of everything in base game also, it doesn't help the games difficulty when you end up using Power style Aya....let's just say the game is completly self aware on how disgusting Salvo (read: skill link) is in this game, im part because of just how well power aya uses it (base 105 FoAtk, base 130 speed)

Great video, but if there's one thing I disagree with it's that Touhou knowledge is recommended to enjoy this game. This was actually the second Touhou-related game I played besides a Mega Man Battle Network fangame that featured Touhou characters, and I still enjoyed it a great amount despite knowing very little about the series at that point. Like I said though, great video and I pretty much agree with all the other points made (the map design can get annoying even on your 10th playthrough, and I'm speaking from experience here...)
@AspreyFM3 жыл бұрын
I think my opinion of required knowledge stems from the other Touhoumon games I played. The first one I ever tried was Touhoumon Purple, and this was before I knew anything outside of EoSD to MoF, so I had to keep looking up a bunch of characters, and I found it hard to get invested in them when compared to the characters I knew. If there's anything I'd be glad to be wrong about, it's the knowledge requirement for playing the game, so it's great to hear some people can really enjoy this game even without knowing too much about Touhou itself. Also, thank you for the HVT Team, it was immensely helpful, and the only reason I could get footage of the Boundary Trance
@bigcti3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if it were any of the other Touhoumon games I'd agree, but I'd argue that TPDP actually makes for an okay introduction to the characters in the series that a player might not know about yet, like most of the PC-98 characters this game prominently features. It managed to work well enough for me anyway, since the previous fangame I played takes place in its own world but with Touhou characters (that often deviate from the original series' canon quite a bit), and as such I didn't really know too much about the series. You're welcome for the HVT team by the way, I actually got it off the TPDP Wiki's Discord and it's often used for speedrunning the HVT, from what I've heard.

I honestly disagree with your final rating. Yes, having knowledge of Touhou lets you understand where you would find each puppet, but that only really matters if you're interested in nabbing a specific puppet in the first place. But what if you're familiar with Touhou but haven't played a Pokemon game ever? It seems the game is somehow intuitive enough but I can't be sure how much of that intuitiviness comes from the original installments, given the aparent overall lack of information in-game 🤔
@AspreyFM3 жыл бұрын
The game definitely expects knowledge from both, and borrows ideas from multiple generations of Pokemon, it's hard for me to gauge since Pokemon has been a series I've known for years. The Touhoumon stuff all started as ROM hacks of Generation 3, with this game being a sort of sequel successor to them, it's the same team behind one of them, which is why some of the themes are mashups of Pokemon and Touhou themes (like Flandre and Yukari) I do think that it's easier to try out a Pokemon game to get a feel for what Pokemon is compared to cramming years of Touhou lore, but again, I'm not a good judge of that because of my history with Pokemon

You need to buy the game, there's a link in the description. But, if you want to get it free, you can go to moriya shrine website. The way you installed it is complicated, took me 4 hours to figure out. But there's videos in youtube to show you how to install this game.

When you say audio, do you mean music or voice? I don't have a good idea of my own volume since I tend to have my own really high to hear all the cracks in the speech

@@AspreyFM For my ears/setup, this video (alone) is a little quiet, but not very. The music/vocal balance is fine. For reference, my headphones are good, and I can't stand loud noises, so with headphones and 100% program volume, the standard range of system volume for optimum volume of a KZbinr varies from 10/100 to 14/100. This video reached the optimum volume at about 16-18/100 system volume; 14/100 is just a little soft. A small increase to total volume might be good for viewers. (Though I would guess that you'll need to adjust your settings so that you don't blow out your own ears while testing it.) By comparison, your "Intro to Touhou" video was about 12-16/100 system volume and your Super Marisa Land video was about 12-14/100, so those were more standard volumes. Thus, it's not a uniform effect across all videos. Possibly just a "are you speaking at mezzo piano or mezzo forte volume" sort of thing.

Appreciate the info, I have a feeling most of the volume swings comes from my position in front of the mic, since I don't have anything to use to gauge my distance, sometimes I'm too close or too far. The lack of a filter means I have a lot of cracks and stuff I want removed so my own volume is cranked, so when it sounds moderate, it's probably on the quieter side
