The idea is that happiness isn't something that you should have to look back on as a fond memory that isn't occurring anymore. You should be able to feel happiness no matter where you are in life, but sometimes depression and anxiety (which this song is about) prevents us from doing just that, thus making happiness something we can simply look back on and think "man, it sure was nice when I could actually feel that way"
