Funnily enough, that is exactly what mythological amanojaku are like... Ever seen a statue of some Asian deity standing on a small, almost child-like demon? That is an amanojaku being trampled by a god... And that's pretty much their reward and place in the world: They'll be nuisances and as a reward they get to be defeated by gods. I don't think even the gods understand their nigh-masochistic mindset but, you know, as long as there are some relatively harmless demons that they get to curbstomp, and them doing that is considered awesome by all parties involved, including the amanojaku, who are they to complain?
@GrahamChapman3 жыл бұрын
@Brady Cook Eh, it's rather that "winning" isn't a conclusion condition to her. Rather, if she wins, then she just keeps the conflict going without ever even stopping to celebrate her "victory", because the conflict itself is what she ultimately wants and there is no actual "victory condition" beyond keeping the conflict going in the here and now.

Funny thing to think about: Seija is the first Touhou villain to have won. Sure, she didn't make the weak the rulers and the strong the oppressed as she originally set out to do, but she _did_ turn the world of Touhou upside-down. Unlike all other villains (save for Tenshi), she's not forgiven and befriended after she's defeated in DDC; in Impossible Spell Card you play the bad gal running from the "law" instead of the other way around and the spell card rules have been thrown into the wind. Seija also doesn't use her own powers during Impossible Spell Card when you get to play as her but instead uses the powers of several other playable characters... She turned the world upside-down allright. She turned it upside-down _for us_. Again.

+GrahamChapman isn't Byakuren the first one to win? technically she's not a villain, but she did founded the biggest temple with the greatest faith in Gensokyo
@GrahamChapman9 жыл бұрын
sonofrose Not really, no. Ignoring the fact that she, like you said, isn't a villain by any definition of the word, there's still the fact that the plot of UFO wasn't about the Myourens attempting to found a temple, it was to release Byakuren from Makai. Frankly speaking, Byakuren wasn't even involved with/aware of the plot of UFO to have her released until it had already succeeded. She was just locked up in Makai and the other Myouren residents set out to free her... Sure, in a way I suppose you could say that the "villains" of UFO, the Myouren residents, succeeded/won but, well, they're still not even vaguely villainous... the playable characters of UFO were arguably bigger villains than the Myourens... >__>

There's a lot of clever reversed lyrics in here that work really well, but my favourite in this song will be the line: "Unlike all of you I've got nothing to lose, and a whole world of difference to gain" I think this line really fuels a lot of speculation into Seija's character. As an amanojaku she is naturally hated by everyone, and she has always had nothing. But is that the sort of life she wants? Does she enjoy being hated, like people expect, or does she secretly resent her status? And even if she couldn't care less about what people think of her, the fact that she has no possessions, no loved ones, and no place to call home means that she has no risk in trying to create an entire upheaval of the system. There is nothing in the world that could possibly go worse for her, even if she completely turns the world on its head. But maybe, just maybe, there is a chance that her life might be better because of it.
@GrahamChapman5 жыл бұрын
The word "Amanojaku" is used by Japanese to describe a contrarian. Seija being an Amanojaku means that she has no particular personal preference for what kinda life she wants for herself. Rather, her preferences are based upon whatever's contrary to the norms in any given situation. Hence, "Unlike all of you I've got nothing to lose, and a whole world of difference to gain": She doesn't care what the situation is, she doesn't care what people have and what they lack, and she doesn't care what people would gain and what they would lose if she succeeded with turning society upon its head, the fact that she made the whole world completely different from what it originally was is the only thing she values. "The clusterfuck is its own reward" kinda thing. If you want to look for depth in a Touhou character, then I'm afraid I gotta break it to you: You won't find it in Seija 'cuz she's a _delightfully_ shallow rebel hipster troll... Still, if you _insist_ on attributing her with some kinda character depth, then consider the following: An Amanojaku's nature is that they act contrary to everyone else. They don't want to make friends, they want to make enemies, because that's an Amanojaku's equivalent to friends. They don't want to make other happy, they want to make them upset, because that's an Amanojaku's equivalent to "being there" for others. They don't want to be loved, they want to be hated, because they're just plain contrarians that way... If you take that to its logical conclusion, then that means that the way an Amanojaku would express its love for someone else is going to be abusive. Now, try to write a Seija slashfic with a happy ending without breaking character. I swear, Seija is the shippers' ultimate foil. (I've actaully only seen one story that managed to pull off that feat, and it accomplished it by making Seija _really_ freaked out by her "unnatural feelings" for Shinmyoumaru... not the gayness of the feelings, as Shinmyoumaru assumed at one point in the story, Seija didn't give a schlock about that, but rather the unnaturalness of wanting to see Shinmyoumaru smile and laugh and stuff... Most of the comedy in that story was, appropriately enough, considering the contrarian nature of it all, derived from the completely serious "drama" of Seija coming to terms with the fact that she didn't want to see Shinmyoumaru cry and/or suffer, like a normal Amanojaku would, instead going through melodramatic phases of "What the hell am I doing to Shinmyoumaru?! This is not how you're not supposed to treat your Significant Other! I'm an unnatural sicko! A freak!" kinda like a person who's just discovered that they're into BDSM and is very much conflicted about this freaky kink... except, with all the BDSM and stuff exchanged with fluff like making Shinmyoumaru valentines' chocolate, taking her on romantic dates and calling her cute pet names... I only saw that story once and haven't been able to find it since, though.)

That reminds me of the Communist Party manifesto, with the sentence "you have nothing to lose but your chains". In fact, there are several lines that sound inspired by socialist, communist songs; I mean, take an extract from the Internationale: "The earth shall rise on new foundations: We have been nought, we shall be all!" It wouldn't sound out of place among the last stanzas.

Ohh, I also wanna take the chance to explain that one difficult-to-translate line. Sorry about that. _"Your cards are suited for a very different hand..."_ It's a complicated line that I'm stupidly proud of because I like silly wordplay. It uses the motif of playing card games like poker: There, the cards have "suits" and are dealt in "hands." But it also evokes the figurative idiom of "the hand you're dealt in life," i.e. the privileges you're born with. Seija would say, "The hand you've been dealt (your position of power) is better suited for me." Additionally, speaking of "cards" is of course an allusion to "spell cards"-- because Seija literally takes the spell card rules into her own hands and shuffles things up.

Of course not. And by of course not, I mean of course, I don't mind.~ That sounds awesome, good luck! I really like it when people make something further with my lyrics, as long as credit is given.

The fact that an Amanojaku whose defining character trait is "always having the opposite opinion from everyone else" is one of the only characters who actively fight against systemic oppression should tell you something about Gensokyo's "good guys".

But... she made up the oppression. What she told to Shinmyoumaru was just to manipulate her. What she is fighting for is making the weak rule over the strong. Edit: Shimnyoumaru on the other hand was actually fighting against oppression, and still is, though no longer because of Seija.
@Ponera-Sama Жыл бұрын
I made my comment before I knew that, but now I know that. And I have to say that even if that's not the intention, this kind of twist reads like some of the most toxic neoreactionary propaganda that demonizes people who are concerned with discrimination and other systemic issues by saying not only that the oppression they're fighting against is not real, but that they intentionally made it up and are actually just evil. I still find it hard to believe that a series with generally progressive messaging like Touhou would go down that route. And I get that Amanojaku in mythology are supposed to be deceivers who tempt people into unintentionally doing evil, but even with the setup we get in DDC there are still so many ways this could have been done without the reactionary messaging. For instance, they could make Seija herself a victim of genuine discrimination because of the role Amanojaku are known to play despite not actually wanting to play it, something another commenter pointed out and apparently thinks Lyrica might agree with. They could treat the "always doing and wanting the opposite of everyone else" gig as an analogy for disability or mental disorder the way DC Comics sometimes does with Bizarro, or they could deconstruct it by showing that many previous villains also wanted to fundamentally change Gensokyo and even some of the heroes have their gripes with how it's currently run, but since the ordinary civilians like Gensokyo the way it is Seija's tendency of disagreeing with everyone actually made her agree with most of the major characters that Gensokyo should change. Or they could even treat it as giving Seija a unique mode of insight that allows her to challenge issues that other people take for granted and make it a point on how dissenting opinions are a necessary part of society since without them it can't improve on itself. But apparently "evil SJW using fake oppression as excuse to do crimes" is the best they could come up with for this game.

Weak rule the strong? Heresy according to Yosuga, the reason of strength. Let both sides of the coin of heaven and hell hunt her down, for demons and angels obey alike. I know this is an SMT reference but ZUN has made references as well in Touhou so please don't crucify me.
