I would've liked to reference other fictional tanuki, but I don't know many, heheh. (Anyway, but it's also justified to ignore those references, since Mamizou literally wears a leaf on her head, making "turning over a new leaf" a generally relevant idiom, and she literally does cross into Gensokyo, a "wild world beyond belief"~.)

Lyrica Live Kind of a pity you didn't know about Pocky and Rocky (Japanese title: 奇々怪界, KiKi KaiKai, Mysterious Ghost World) in that case. Would've been a very appropriate reference considering that Pocky (or Sayo-chan, as she's called in Japan) is a shrine maiden and Rocky (or Manuke as the Japanese call him) is a tanuki, many of the enemies they fight are youkai and the game even had "Bomb" attacks... The reference aside, Pocky and Rocky, as well as its sequel, are also pretty good games; I'd warmly recommend downloading them for a SNES emulator and giving 'em a go on some lazy day.
