Hello to everybody, i believe the kora is from 15th century. Nobody knows the exact date but its probabily from the last half of the 15th century. The first wave of the kaabu empire(where in fact appears the instrument, not in songhai empire) was in the first half of 15th century so there is a lot of discussion, whether it belongs to the first half or the last half of that century. before the kora there were various instruments of the same family, among them the bolonbata that had 11 to 13 strings and that survived until the 18-19 century. Legend tells us that the kora was created or made known by djely madi wulen in Kaabu, currently in Guinea-Bissau. Sidiki Diabate, The Great, father of the kora angel, Toumani Diabate, left us his testimony, saying the same as say all players and Mandingo historians in gambia, the mali, the Guinea: The Kora is from Kaabu(Gabú or Kaaba). The first melody that is learned is the Kelefa ba, which speaks of the hero of Sane line known for Kelefa ba Sané(translated: the great lord of war Sané) who lived in the 15th century, in the begining of the kaabu empire. All other songs before Kelefa ba belong to repertoires of other instruments such as the balafon, ngoni, flute and other. The Portuguese invaders registered a terrible battle in the second half of the century 15 in which the Fula attacker army was totally destroyed by the Mandigas. The Portuguese noted that to know how rich was a Mandingo, have to count how many Fulani heads he had and not how many cattle he had. This reinforces the idea of the golden age of Kaabu have been in the 15 century and the kora creation legend belongs to this period. Best of all for everybody.
@throbule10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the good history lesson, and you are right about the Kora's probable origin (More Gambian/Guinean than Malian). The most important thing here of course, is the wonderful music and these amazing musicians playing it. Without a great musician to practice and play, the Kora, like many instruments, is just a mute piece of wood and skin.

At the time kora was created Guinea and Gambia didn't exist. It was the Empire of Mali. Guinea and Gambia were invented at the independance in the 60's. Your comment is a bit stupid for me.

There is nothing on the BBC site, TV red button etc which is so sad as he is so brilliant . Instead the BEEB selected lots of dross and half naked women. Everyone should have kora in their life. CDs are really brilliant. ,
