Cirencester is a genuinely attractive historic market town in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. It’s a great place for shopping with a range of boutique and specialist shops and really good cafes, pubs and restaurants.
In fact it is known as the capital of the Cotswolds, so is a great centre for a day trip or a staycation.
Cirencester has one of the finest ‘wool churches’ in the Cotswolds. English wool was universally esteemed as the finest in Europe. Wool and cloth merchants of the town who benefitted from this trade bestowed a portion of their wealth on the church.
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist in the market place is well worth a visit.
Cirencester has a long history going back to Roman times when it was the second most important town in Britain after London.
Another great place to visit is the award winning museum called the Corinium Museum that tells the story of the Cotswolds from pre-history to present day, with a big focus on the Roman period.
