Now, having long settled in Australia, I wonder why more isn't being done to promote the history of Gloucester? On my last visit - about 15 years ago - this once proud city with so much proud history looked dismal and anything but proud.

Lovely video. I hiked this section of the Cotswold Way in September 2021; it was my first visit to the Cotswolds. I loved every minute of my 3 day walk on the Way. I thought this section is very interesting due to the village of Stanway. The Gatehouse is very impressive. I looked for the Stanway Mill but didn't see any signs. Thanks to your video I now know. I plan to walk the entire Cotswolds Way in Fall 2025. Carry on!

As a teenager I lived near Campden and, now abroad, often return. It puzzles me how Campden is less popular than many other Cotswolds sites, like Broadway for example. Is there a better High Street in the Cotswolds? Combined with other nearby attractions like Dover’s Hill and the gardens at Hidicote and Kiftsgate why go elsewhere?

Wonderful video Anne, thank you. Both of my paternal grandparents were from Bourton on the Water and their family names are on the war memorial by the river and in the church. My great aunt owned a cottage called Flories Cottage, where my father was evacuated to from London in WWII. I was last there about three years ago and the name plate has now gone from the cottage. My grandmother went to school in the village with the actor Wilfred Hyde-White, whose father was the vicar of the church and christened my father.

Tremendously good, it avoids the tedious walk down one side of the street and back along the other, which is such a feature of Moreton. Concentrating on inns and the Fire Station College, also starting with lots of green, is brilliant, except for the first bit with the long information talk at the railway station. It may seem logical like that, but it would have been better left to the end.

@@AnneBartlett People won't watch it at all if they don't like the beginning. It has just dawned on me that, not only does this town have my father's surname (see on my channel), but you have my mother's surname (Don't worry, I don't use it on the internet as a password). Interesting. My curiosity is, I am surprised the streets are as wide as they are. You would have thought, if this layout was decided in medieval times, that the streets would be rather narrow, but I see many that are quite wide, even by today's standards. Thanks, - Jeff
@AnneBartlett2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff Thank you very much for your comment. I'm no expert, but I've discovered that Burford was granted one of the earliest market charters in the country during the late 11th or early 12th century by Robert Fitzhamon Earl of Gloucester, a relation of William the Conqueror. Around that time Burford, was carefully planned and burgage plots were allocated for homes and workplaces to be built fronting onto the market place. The High Street was left wide to allow for temporary stalls to be set up along the middle of the street allowing people and carts to pass either side during its weekly market and annual fairs. The local burgesses were quick to take advantage of the commercial opportunities that came their way. Burford’s market and location on the packhorse route to and from coastal ports made it an important and wealthy medieval town.
