TOUR DIVIDE 2024 RACE COVERAGE DAY9: 'Last night in the Basin I just fell apart'

Welcome to my daily coverage of the 2024 Tour Divide. The Tour Divide is a 2700mile bikepacking race traversing the length of the USA. The Tour Divide starts in Banff, Canada and finishes at Antelope Wells on the USA/Mexico border.
The record for bikepacking the Tour Divide is help by the late Mike Hall and is 13 days 22hours and 51minutes set in 2016.
Lael Wilcox currently holds the women's Tour Divide record with a time of 15 days 10 hours 59 minutes.

Kirsten at Brush Mountain Lodge is a life saver for everyone riding the Great Divide. Even if you're just touring the route like myself in the past, Brush Mtn is a sweet island of rest for an overnight stop. I think Ulrich is pacing himself and leaving the gap at 20-30 miles on purpose. That lets Justinas set the pace that Ulrich can stay at and not blow the race up. Ulrich will put the hammer down for the last 200 miles feeling rested and organized.

This channel is the first thing I check each morning during the Tour Divide. I really appreciate the coverage and insider knowledge. But I sure miss the human interest side of things that Josh showcased last year. I suppose nothing beats the portapotty incident...but we also had Mira La Perra, and Josh's own palpable FOMO. The Tour Divide is so much more than the "longest gravel race." All the reasons people drop out along the way are nearly as interesting (and inspiring) as progress made by the leaders. But I'm missing that this time around.

Marshal Pass is an old railroad grade so the gradient is very very consistent.

Monsoons have started early in NM which pose some challenges AND the new route changes in NM can really change things up as far as staying ahead of MH record!

Smart riding from those top riders. To me, they seem to have better race plans than last year when it just looked like it was a race to simply sleep as little as possible. Meaghan also showing the value of carry a little more gear & therefore being able to camp out in the Basin.

Unfortunately, 2 time Trans Am winner Kraig Pauli had to scratch at 1,225 miles. Still dealing with injuries from getting hit by a car last year

I did notice on the Rigs of TDV pageJimmy Ashby was sporting 3 exposed water bottles. Hope he didn’t pick up giardia. Nasty stuff.
