TOUR OF DUTY Cast Then and Now ( 1987 VS 2022) - How They Changed & Who Died
• TOUR OF DUTY Cast Then...
======================
Tour of Duty is an American military drama television series based on events in the Vietnam War, broadcast on CBS. The series ran for three seasons, from September 24, 1987, to April 28, 1990, for a total of 58 one-hour episodes. The show was created by Steve Duncan and L. Travis Clark and produced by Zev Braun.
The show follows an American infantry platoon on a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. It was the first television series to regularly show Americans in combat in South Vietnam and was one of several similarly themed series to be produced in the wake of the acclaimed Oliver Stone film Platoon (1986).
The series won an Emmy Award in 1988 for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Drama Series, and it was nominated again in 1989 and 1990

Proud but sad son of a Vietnam Vet. This show still means a lot to me. The actors truly did justice to a generation of Americans that did not receive the loyalty that they deserved at home

Tour of Duty, best tv series. Acting was superb, story lines were played so realistic. Thank you for making such a great show, and for all the actors on the series. May every man and woman who served in Viet Nam, thank you for your service, and the brave soldiers who lost their life, rest in peace and thank you for your brave service.

Am watching Tour of Duty again over 30 years later its still keeps me on edge. This show was so well written and acted, still don't understand why it was cancelled so abruptly. It just goes to show intelligent television doesn't stand a chance against sitcoms!

'Nam fatigue. After Platoon and the less-mentioned but not-forgotten (and, in my opinion, better movie) Hamburger Hill 'Nam movies, the networks took up the baton dropped by the studios to grab the audience's attention. Mostly, these productions were 'true' to the source material, but ultimately, the dramas were not conducive to the network's weekly formats [schedules] they were placed in. Audiences wanted more humor, not dramatize reality. On top of that, the productions were costly to make. Several actors (silently) took pay cuts in both ToD and China Beach so the shows could go on. That said, there were current conflicts the US military was fighting that took away the focus of a 'war' that was concluded some twelve years earlier. As more audiences became familiar with the war, old questions started to be asked again by a new generation. Why were we there? What happened in the Phoenix Program? Was the Mia Li Massacre a one-off? Why was addiction so extreme? And the elephant in the room, the MIA/POW conflict. Something to this day has not been resolved. As far as the corporate heads were concerned, 'they' and 'we' finally appreciated the veteran's service and recognized their sacrifices, so enough was enough. Now, it's time to move on. Thankfully, this show and others like it helped ensure that veterans returning home would not be disrespected again by the populace. This continues to this day. I'm a US Army disabled veteran [Combat Medical Specialist]. My father was a career [23 years] US Army Korea and 'Nam veteran. Both my brothers and my little sister are US Army veterans. Our father never EVER talked about combat, but he did speak about the dismissive nature shown to him and other vets returning home from being overseas. Especially for people of color like my family. He never watched war movies or TV shows. Every now and then, he would watch a scene or two when I had a question about specific topics about the military. But that was it. This show and Hamburger Hill were my encyclopedias for learning about the war and the internal conflicts that can (and do) occur within the service at the platoon and company levels. It was eye-opening and a gift when it was my turn to lead. Doc B 1ID HHC 1-16 Inf MECH Medi Plt Evac Section "Iron Rangers"

Thank you for your very astute observations and conclusions. You reminded me of my father, who fought in Europe in WWII. He never spoke of his battle experiences, either. The difference was that he would watch the old documentary tv series that focused on both world wars, such as “The Twentieth Century.” Also, the show “Combat” was one he admired because he believed it was the show that portrayed the war the most realistically. I remember him telling us kids to look for him and Grandaddy, who fought in World War I, in the documentary shows. That held our interest in the shows. Although my father was successful with his life choices, I believe he always had lingering bouts of depression that were caused during his time in the war. He rarely showed this outwardly.

The best show portraying an unpopular war and the brave men and women who fought or provided support. The writers, actors and producers were at their best while putting these episodes together. I thoroughly enjoyed each show. The great Carl Weathers recently passed away. May he rest peacefully in God's Kingdom.

I found this show on Crackle two days before he passed (RIP.) I was shocked when I saw him in the credits. Even though I watched it as a kid growing up, I never realized he was the Captain. The show still holds up great, but boy do I miss "Paint it Black" being the theme song.

1:50 - John Dye's character was PFC Francis "Doc Hoc" Hockenbury, not Hocken. And it's interesting that Miguel Núñez Jr. looks like he's the only one who hasn't aged. Tour of Duty was such an amazing show. It portrayed a little of the 'oorah' American bravado, but it was more about the inner workings of all the folks in the platoon (squad would be more accurate, given the number of people). I miss the show.

My Dad used to watch this when I was little. It was about the only TV show I remember him watching at all back then. Years later it is still one of my favorites. Sgt. Zeke is my favorite character. The outro theme song by Joseph Conlan (also the into on the DVDs) is eerie 80's Asianesque synth goodness

Appreciate the update. I remember Tour of Duty well. As an "uncredited extra" on Angel of Mercy (season 1 episode 20), I played the medical corpsman who takes Nurse Tuyet (Julie Ow) on stretcher to her room, responding to Lt. Nikki Raimes (Pamela Gidley). Looking on are Staff Sergeant Clayton “Zeke” Anderson (right, played by Terence Knox) and Lt. Myron Goldman (bandaged head, played by Stephen Caffrey). A child of the Vietnam era, and a amateur wore historian. I had no idea that this show was on television. It might have been due to the fact that I was working three jobs at the time in TV wasn't necessarily a thought. It was only until the early 2000's... that I discovered it on Netflix and my sons and I started watching it. Had the opportunity to explain what Vietnam war was about how I always expected to be drafted to fight, but never was. May God have a special place for every for on both sides.
