Nice group of bananas going there now Conor. You're going to be very busy transplanting 😱

I am still amazed whenever I see a banana plant in the UK. I just got my allotment plot yesterday and can't wait to follow your journey and take some tips. :) I would grow a banana plant just for the leaves alone

Yeah the foliage is amazing! There are quite a lot of banana plants that grow well here in Summer, but they just need a helping hand getting through the colder months.

Nice look at your bananas, Conor. The growth this year on my second clump of basjoo in the front garden has been really slow. I didn't bother protecting it, mostly because I didn't want to wrap it up with it being at the front of the house. It died back to the ground but has come back as I expected. Basjoo is meant to be cold hardy at the root/corm level to something like -15°C which thankfully we never see here. I actually think the pseudostems on my large clump in the back garden could probably survive unprotected in most winters now, but I don't want to risk it until I get it to flower. Once it starts flowering, I'll probably just leave it unprotected and see how it manages.

Thanks Peter! Yeah I'm hoping yours will flower soon, it'd be really cool! Not sure I'll let mine get to fruiting size on my plot, but I'll see.

You'll get flowers when you wrap the stems through winter in order for them to survive, so the plant can restart at 1-1.5m height already. They'll never make it to flowers if they'll have to start from scratch every spring.

Yeah definitely, though I don't want my basjoo flowering as it'll be too big for my plot, but my dwarf cavendish are going to be potted and overwintered inside 🙌🌿

@@hopeitgrows2892 I'm trying now with M. acuminata 'Blue Java' aka 'Ice Cream'. Theye are said to be able to handle a few °C below zero. One plant inside, one plant in the greenhouse.

That's cool! I tried getting that years ago but hard to find. Are you in the US? Seems more widely grown there.
