In New Zealand we have these as Monarch caterpillar food trees (they can grow into trees if left). We call them Swan plants. The seed pods look like swans - so the stem that attaches to the main plant is the neck and the pod is the swans body. They have a heap of seeds inside which are attached to silk type fly-aways... (keep one to open in Autumn/Fall) The Monarch caterpillars usually strip the plant of all of its leaves and most people need to buy more plants to feed them..lol Pip from New Zealand

I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your blog, I fell into your blog accidentally. One day I was just thinking about my mother and the memories that we had when I came across it one day and started watching it and I had to watch everyone of your videos. I wanted to let you know that I am a 56-year-old woman that lost her mom when I was in my early 30s and so I was not able to learn through experience about gardening and flowers from my mom. I so enjoy seeing videos of you doing things with your mother and the friendship and closeness that you two share. I have learned so much from your videos about gardening, you have helped me be able to bring my mom back alive in my flowers and in my garden. I love working in the dirt because I feel like it brings me closer to my mom, I can’t thank you enough for what you were doing, for the kindness of your heart and the positive atmosphere that you have. I know with your growing family it is hard to do these videos but please know that you have helped me bring back the tender moments from my mom and remember the things that we did do while she was here on this earth.

You are a great team and he knows exactly how to shoot you and exactly how to best show off what you are trying to describe at the moment. I hope you do some videos on plants other than Colorado blue spruce that are great blue foliage plants for the garden. I'm in zone 7 and blue spruce are not doing well here and the more reputable garden centers will not even sell them. Oh those gophers! Just made me heartsick when you said they ate all around the crabapple😢. And spider mites also. It's a constant battle isn't it. I had aphids this summer I was fighting. And Laura, you always look lovely no matter if it gets to a hundred and five. We can't tell on the video. ️ ❤️

Hey Laura, will we ever get a video meeting Chris? Or maybe videos of Chris and/or Aaron teaching us about drip, small gardening projects, maintenance, etc. Would love to see some segments like "Aaron's Drip Corner" or "Garden Secrets with Chris." I'm all for taking some pressure off of you, especially as you get further into this pregnancy!

I call that plant a 'swan plant', the one with the green seed pods. The monarch butterflies love it. The seed pods are crammed with fluffy seeds. They are shaped like swans. I'm in New Zealand.

AGAIN Laura, You delight me! My Husband is a 20+ year USAF veteran. He does not have the polite filter gene your husband has. LOL Have to tell you...you saved my Rose of Sharon. If it wasn't for you, I would even know what chlorosis was. Iron-Tone to the rescue. TY TY TY Plus I'm adding Groundhog Aronia to my problem area with some Black-eyed-Susan's. Can't wait. The pollinators on my Rose of Sharon are incredible. Stay hydrated young friend. Cathy M/PA

I originally wanted this to be a white garden. However, now I agree that would be better suited in a shadier, more intimate area of the garden. This area of your garden may be my favorite. I like the structure of the maples and boxwoods, the hardscape of the brick path and urns and the site-lines into the veg garden. My suggestion- since you will be using more color interest, keep the urns simple. Just one vertical plant per urn. Those urns are too beautiful to be covered up.

I know you’ve already planted it up, but a moon garden would be beautiful on the side of the house near the new walkway and circle. I hope you decide to try it again on a smaller scale in a shaded area sometime in the future! 💗💜💗

Maybe you could have a moon garden in that space just for the spring, when the sunlight isn't as harsh and there's more cloud cover? You already have white tulips planted there, so you can add to that with white daffodils, hyacinths and pansies, as well as white blooming shrubs, like white lilacs or dwarf cherry blossoms. I think that would look quite nice.

When you first described the idea of a west side moon garden I didn’t think I’d like it; now seeing it so full of blooms and different textures I really like it!! It compliments the formality of the walkway and urns. No matter what you do it turns out beautiful and inspiring.

What about making this space a “two-tone” garden? Like white and only purple or white and only peach. That way you can still keep that element of structure and some air of formality. And it would keep it a visually restful space while still allowing color so it doesn’t look dried out. And it would unify that long vista so your eyes wouldn’t get too tired while scanning down that stretch. I think it could look really classy. Plus, if you make that second color fairly dark (like purple), the white would still “pop” against it in the moonlight.
