The most legendary mariner in Chinese history, Admiral Zheng He of the Ming dynasty, was a Muslim, born and brought up in a distinguished Muslim family in China. In more colloquial Chinese, he was known interchangeably as 三寶太監 or 三保太監, read as San Bao Tai Jian. During the admiral's sojourns in the Middle East, the locals commonly knew him by this more colloquial name "Sanbao" and hence was born the legend of Sinbad in the Middle East. No surprise then that some years ago when Hollywood were hatching the idea of a life-action movie of Sinbad, Keanu Reeves was the one and only choice to play the role of Sinbad/Zheng He. For Zheng He himself came from a lineage of Middle Easterners who had lived in and intermarried with local Chinese for generations. (His great-great-great grandfather served in the Mongolian court of Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty.) Sinbad/Zheng He was therefore tall and striking, with the appearance of a person of mixed Middle Eastern and Asiatic parentage - just exactly how Keanu looks. (The movie never got made and to this day, there are musings over whether studio heads were bogged down by geopolitical winds. Box office potential was highly unlikely a hindrance given Keanu Reeve's proven marketability, the access to the Chinese movie market given the theme of the movie and last but not least the appeal of the legendary Sinbad in western storybooks.) Muslims have lived peacefully alongside and embraced by the Chinese people in China for millennia; there is no greater evidence of this than the legend of Sinbad himself. How ironic, that almost ALL westerners, having no clue of the harmonious co-existence between the Chinese and Muslims from afar for thousands of years, keep dredging up the false narrative of Muslims as antagonists of the Chinese people in China.
