What you referred to as a cylinder machine beside Edison's desk is actually an early version of a Dictaphone that he invented in 1877. You can see the trumpet shaped mouthpiece that he would speak into, attached to a hose & coiled at the top of the machine. He would dictate notes and letters into this, which would be recorded onto a metal (not wax)cylinder with tin foil wrapped around it, and later be transcribed to typed notes by his secretary. The machine had two diaphragm-and-needle units, one for recording, and one for playback. The vibrations made by his voice, made "indents" in the foil cover of the tube. On the first audio recording he ever made on the prototype, Edison recited, “Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow"!😊 Although the recording machines themselves are now quite high-tech electronic devices, you can still see the "mouth trumpet" he invented STILL in use to this very day by court stenographers during trials in court rooms across America to create the official synopsis of the proceedings.

The inventor is said to have napped while holding a ball in each hand, presuming that, as he fell asleep, the orbs would fall to the floor and wake him. This way he could remember the sorts of thoughts that come to us as we are nodding off, which we often do not recall.

I’m now the proud owner of my parents Ford XR6 sedan. Dad passed away in Nov 2021 and then mum developed dementia, I purchased the car so she wouldn’t drive it. She has since gone into a nursing home. Dad was only 75 and mum only just turned 77. My dad loved the car, so I’m happy 😃 that I have it. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺

Hurricane Ian destroyed much of Fort Myers, the beach is devastation. I’m happy to see that there was minimal damage to the estates! Flooding was a huge problem with this hurricane, I’ve lived here for 38 years and never seen it like it was. My house flooded throughout and still have repairs to continue 7 months later!

In comparison with today's hideous McMansions, it's a pleasure to see how lovely and human-scaled these houses are. I hope someday it will be possible to bring back the lush landscaping that once existed in front of the Ford property. Thanks for sharing another great video!

Thank you Jordan and Katie for sharing this terrific day out and providing all of us with the opportunity of experiencing the thrill of exploring these two historical estates. It was interesting to see the old photograph of how secluded, private and quiet the Ford house appeared with the tall shrubbery and trees masking the front entrance - whereas today the view from the porch seems to stretch towards a busy road - with cars going back and forth. Somehow I think, if the ghost of Henry Ford ever visits his winter estate, he'd probably be quite content with what he was seeing. Also, the opening shots of the boats brought home a reminder that the heartache brought about by hurricanes etc. doesn't end when the global news coverage does. Great Vlog.

Very interesting how people in general in the earlier days were used to much smaller spaces in their buildings. As time has passed room sizes have grown across the board. Of course wealthier folks had more spacious accommodations but in general living spaces were more reduced. Thank you for the adventure!

Thank you so much for doing this video of the Edison Ford Winter Estates. I grew up in Fort Myers. We went there many times for school field trips and Holiday House which is when the homes are open to visitors at night. They are decorated as Mina would have decorated them for Christmas. You did such a great job covering the whole property. I really appreciate that since I don't live in Florida any more. The reason there are 2 homes for Edison is because, one of them was originally his partners home. Edison found out that his partner was doing a business deal behind his back and Edison either fired him or forced him to leave the company which also means the partner either sold his part of the winter home or just left it to Edison. At that point either Mina or Edison had it renovated and it was sometimes used for guests. The reason the Edison statue was holding a ball was because, when he would nap, he would get his best ideas. When he would fall asleep with a metal ball in his band with an iron plate beneath it and when he would drift off to sleep the ball would drop and hit the tray which would wake him up and he would write any ideas down that came to him during his nap. I had never noticed the statue was holding a ball. Of all of the KZbin videos on the Edison Winter Estate you are the only one to notice that! Thank you! I will have to check that out the next time that I visit. Here is a link to a short talk about brain wave states where they mention Edison and his naps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKiYYoSAq8x7m6M

Thank You for visiting the Winter homes of Edison and Ford 😊 The reason for separate homes is to let the breeze blow through the porches and walkways and help cool different parts of a home. The twin beds are so each of them, especially the Wife to not be disturbed when he came to bed late.

Electric ceiling fans were invented in 1882 by Philip Diehl. I would not be surprised if they were installed on the home soon after Edison heard about them. Ford jokes about his Model T when asked about color choices, "You can have any color as long as it's black."

9:20 It is funny that you speculated that Edison and his wife may have had separate rooms because at that time most rich couples did, as having your own bedroom that was exclusively yours was a sign of wealth and status. That is why Henry Pellatt and his wife had their own rooms at Casa Loma in Toronto.

Been there many times over the years. I wondered how they faired from the hurricane. The one time there, the Ford House wasn't even open and was overgrown. They were just starting to clear it out and renovate. You used to actually walk through the lab and that didn't seem like a good idea back then. They also pointed out one of Edison's actual lightbulbs that was still burning in the fixture. Ford, Edison and Firestone were friends because they were also business partners as well. Edison supplied electrical parts to Ford cars and Firestone supplied the tires. I have a 1904 Bakelite Edison Record titled "Flanigan and his Motorcar" Search it on KZbin. The banyan tree, I believe, is the largest in the contiguous US. I believe the Olivetti Mansion is in Ft. Myers as well and we used to see Pat Boone there frequently. Great videos. I need to go back. My regards to Todd Fischer and Harry Nilsson.

Ford, Edison and Firestone were close friends and they all vacationed together with their familie's too!! A funny story with their three families on a road trip somewhere in America: While on the road, one of their Fords stalls on them and after the three inventors each tried fixing the car and couldn't, they had it towed to a mechanics garage near by. The mechanic, who is about to start working on the car, says to Henry: "It's problem might be coming from the engine." Ford answered: "I'm Henry Ford, I created these cars and it's engine is running fine!" The mechanic says back: "Maybe its coming from the wheel movement?" , Ford says back: "Here's my friend, his name is Mr Firestone. He is an expert on wheels and tires and he sees no problems there either!", Mechanic says back: "Maybe it's something more complex, like with it's plugs, wires or it's electrical system?" Henry closes with "Here is my other friend, Thomas Edison and he said it' electrical system is fine too!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅TRUE STORY!!!

A little info: all of the building materials, and personal belongings had to be brought in by water. There was no road system built that far into South Florida then. The Edisons were very interested in plants. They brought in plants from all over the world, and many are still living on the property. Edison was a napper. He spent much time napping in his laboratory while working on projects.

Welcome to Ft.Myers. A little movie trivia for you. The opening scene of the second Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed on the old Edison bridge which was torn down. She parks at the Yacht Basin and gets on the boat. Day of the dead filmed downtown. Sean Connery filmed some scenes from Just Cause down town. Gone Fishing and Coupe DeVille were also filmed here. I got to see Joe Pesci and Danny Glover filming Gone Fishing. Route 66 filmed several episodes in Cape Coral. All I can remember right now lol. Oh yeah, Elvis played at the now torn down exhibition hall by the Yacht basin in the late 50s.
