I miss Annabelle, I grew up in Anchorage and went to visit her every summer. As a teenager, I worked at the zoo one summer. I would sit on the bench near her enclosure while I ate my lunch. Her paintings were wonderful. Her trainer offered to have one made for me, I declined because I was leaving for college, but now I regret that. I ended up moving to Nevada for a teaching job and read Mukluks for Anabelle to my classes every year for our reading week activities. I would show them my mukluks from when I was a little baby, so they could see what they were made of. It was story so different from anything they had ever heard of, that even the older kids enjoyed the book and the presentation of experience with Annabelle. I have now retired from that teaching job and I am back in Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. My backyard is now my zoo. We have two moose families that roam the area and lots of birds.

I don't think this would be allowed to happen to a baby elephant now as it's recognised how much elephants need to be part of a herd. Having said that, Annabelle seems to have had a lot of human contact and this would have helped her. Thankyou for the video Lauren...it's been a welcome distraction from the TV coverage of the death of our beloved Queen Elizabeth. She was an amazing woman and will be missed RIP

Hello Hamm Family ❤️ Thank you for sharing your zoo with us... both the wildlife and kids. Lots of beautiful animals. As much as I prefer to see animals in the wild, it's comforting to know their are people and organizations that care for and rehabilitate wildlife that are in need of help. The story of Annabelle and Maggie was so interesting. My favorites are the Big Cats, especially the Tigers (my #1), the bears and wolves (sad to hear they've all passed on). I shared my moose encounter earlier. They are humongous and a bit scary, especially when you're like me, 5'3 1/2"... Yikes. We have wildlife that visits often: Deer Family (w. an absolute gorgeous Buck). We had 5 new fawns this year. Maggie's foe is the Buck. She puts on a good show when he's not around, but when he is, she's all tail between her legs, a whimper and hide behind Mom or Dad... or beeline it into the house. Fox Family with 5 kits this year. Rabbit Family with lots of babies that Maggie wants desperately to herd. They're not amused. Groundhog Family... our lawn's bitter enemy... and Mark's. Black Bear, pretty sure it's a male, who just passes through now and then... around dusk. Raccoons... little mischief makers. Black King Snakes. Just saw a big one this morning. Birds: Cardinals, Robins, Bluebirds, Jays, Swallows, Wrens, Crows and other Blackbirds, Fultures, Owls and Hawks. An occasional Bat. And lastly, a Feral Cat Family. Over the last few years the Animal Shelter has been catching, neuter/spay, then releasing. Our Ash is one of the babies that adopted us when he was about 10 weeks old. He's a little over 1yo now. Maggie and Dakota were adopted from our Animal Shelter, both when just a few months old. They all went from Paupers to Princes/Princess. Again, thank you for sharing your adventure. Have a Great Weekend. Yah's Blessings ❤️

@@ThisAlaskaLife , I'll give you a tip... I'm not sure of Alaska's snake population, but if you see a non-venomus snake, like a black King, don't kill it. It will scare off easily. If you see a big non-venomus snake then you're less likely to see a venomous snake, as they are enemies. When my son was 18mo he accidentally got between a King and a Diamondback. The King lunged at the Diamondback had the Diamondback took off. The King didn't see my son as threat so ignored him. Unlike the Diamondback which was posturing for a strike. Yah was definitely watching that day. Scared me to death. Do you know how difficult it is to convince an 18mo old not to move or cry? Very difficult and scary. Oops, correction, it was a Diamondback not a Copperhead... both equally scary. My Hubby corrected me... it was 30+ years ago... go figure 🤷🏼‍♀️
@SusanMatthews_TiteChatte

Also, just to clarify for you and the boys, the Black "King" Snake is actually one of three black snakes in Virginia: Northern Black Racer, the Eastern Ratsnake, or the Black Eastern Hognose. The actual "King" Snake is the Coral Snake's nicer cousin. The whole "red touching black, safe for Jack. Red touching yellow, kill a fellow" distinguisher. I've grown up calling the black the "King" because of his size and the "I'm the King of the Castle" attitude 😏

I don't think I did a good job showing the polar bear enclosure, it is actually quite large. It has a large swimming area and caves to sleep in out of the sun. I think it was feeding time and the bear was pacing waiting to be fed.

Shame they can't rehabilitate and exist to reintroduce to the wild. That double pane with the seals is intentionally there. Often viewers bang, knock on the glass not realizing it's loud and nerve racking to the animals and can cause reactive aggression to handlers. Sound defines location and threat in the wild and much sensitive hearing than ours. Imagine having a base drum banging next to your ear. Miserable. I cringed when your son head butted the interior panel. Swimming on back is a soother to stress and boredom. At least the experience was educational for the kids.
