The F111 was NEVER known as an Aardvark in RAAF service. We called it the "Pig" due to its long snout that was always running along the ground in respect to its low level flying capabilities.

Hi. Great aircraft video. I was surprised when the B-111 was assigned the F designator as technically it’s carries no “fighter” equipment not mission. Same with the F-117 stealth plane; it’s a B-117 and it’s only capability is to drop smart bombs. Oh well, the US has a thing about aggressive names. Oh, BTW, at 2:14 you mention .303 bullets. As a grammar nerd, sorry, the sentence should be “Here are .303 bullets” vs “Here is .303 bullets.” Greetings from the US. Ret Captain.

I worked on RAAF base Darwin for a few months, was lucky enough to see jets, globemasters (I think) ospreys, cobras, hueys and more from close, taking off, flying in formation, afterburners, stuff like that. Even saw the B52 in flight! Not the one in the museum obviously. One morning as we were waiting in the truck watching the sunrise I realised dudes where doing the same, but they were sitting on an osprey roof/wings. Too bad we weren't allowed to take pictures. Which is weird since when you go on a civil flight you can take picture of those same spots, just not as close. Went on the Katherine RAAF base also and had an amazing, crazy low pass just over head, I knew it was coming since the army dudes all went outside gazing in the same direction, and I still went to the ground covering my hears... Went in a few other army places, saw a lot of very cool gears... War is bad but man does it looks good!

I read that because the desert, although hot in the daytime would get very cold, even freezing at night due to a lack of cloud cover. Iraqi tank crews would keep themselves warm during these cold nights by switching their engines on. The result? Types like the F-111F could easily see these now warm tanks via their Pave Tack systems.

Thanks, Paul for another wonderful video. Had a friend who was a crew chief on the KC-135's out of Fairchild Air Force base in Spokane, Washington when the B-52s were still stationed there. What incredible machines which I had the opportunity to see up close especially when taking off and landing. However, one of my coworkers had the misfortune of being at a marketing event at a golf course that is adjacent to the base on June 24, 1994, when they witnessed a B-52 crash that seemed like right in front of them.

Very interesting and informative! I live in New York, so I admit to little knowledge of Darwin (other than vaguely recalling a 1970s typhoon, whereupon Joan Sutherland gave a concert to raise relief funds). As for the B-52 engines, I read a recent AWST article stating that they were moving forward with 8-engine options, including those designed for regional jets, to improve range and efficiency, not to improve actual performance.

Major cities that were also attacked were Sydney, Newcastle and Townsville, not just Darwin: Sydney Harbour was attacked by midget submarines; Newcastle was attacked by a submarine shelling the city, and Townsville was bombed, the bombs falling into the harbour except at a suburb of Townsville, Pallarenda, where a bomb killed the daughter of a Greek farmer. Newcastle was a major steel making centre and a major industrial port and the export centre for coal mined in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley regions. The attack on Darwin was more concentrated and sustained.

I had the privilege to have a tour of CAC Fishermans Bend in 1966 and saw the Mirage III under construction. They even had a metal foundry creating parts from basic materials. My recollection is the first batch of the 115(?) RAAF Mirages came from France, then some assembled at CAC imported parts, and the bulk actually made from scratch at CAC Fishermans Bend.

@@PaulStewartAviation well actually you could argue the original Hornets( now being sold to Canada) were assembled in Oz, but the majority of Mirages(airframe, engines, avionics etc)were actually built in Oz back in the sixties when Oz actually built things from raw materials. There is a great book titled " Wirraway to Hornet : a history of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation" that goes into detail about what they did with the Govt Aircraft Factory. Also both the State Libraries of Victoria(Wolfgang Sievers collection/photographer) and South Australia (Lewis Collection) have an amazing photo collections of CAC production building the Mirages and earlier aircrafts. Oh and part of the CAC factory still exists, it is now Boeing's plant in Melbourne producing wing parts for 737 Max.

I might look into it. I'm not sure if they have any more jets than Darwin, though?

Hard to imagine that the b52 would be the military ancestor to the Boeing 707, matter of fact, outliving the 707 by thirty years

I think you're a little confused. The C/KC/EC/RC and other -135 variants are pre airliner boeing 707 airframes and still flying.

Thanks for the video! Darwin is one of the travel destinations I want to make when changes to the current restrictions allow. I was stationed on the USS Independence CV-62 and the ship dropped anchor off the coast of Darwin way back in 1993. Unfortunately for us, it wasn't a liberty port, so I ended up staying aboard for the short stay. So close, yet so far. The Darwin Aviation Museum may have very well been one of the places I would have visited if I made it ashore.

With your tour of that still awesome B-52, I've never felt that the nickname of "BUFF" was fair or made any sense at all. I've always thought this to be a beautifully designed bomber. The U.S. Air Force moron who assigned that nickname was probably one of your typically disgruntled fellows with way too much time on his hands. I still see our U.S. Air Force flying these planes every once in a while here in northern California. Hard to believe this plane has been a part of our inventory for the past 66 years this year! Anyway, a great review, Paul. Thanks!

That F-111 hiding in the corner looks incredible! Such a sleek design! And my god that B-52 is ugly! It's the dictionary definition of function over form! Incredible that they'll be flying for another 100 years!

The B-52 is essentially the 747 of military aviation. Huge, designed by Boeing, remaining in service long after its maiden flight

Hello from Brazil. I wonder why Australia had a bomber like the B 52? What is its use and mission. Grateful for any information

Did Angela and Steve look after you during your visit? I can just make out Steve in his F-111 shirt on the access platform beside the F-111. This must be a recent video as the new giant ceiling fans have not long been installed, great for open cockpit days.

This popped up in my "recommends" so here I am. I was a weapons loader on the FB-111 at Plattsburg AFB, NY and when the base was getting rid of the FB-111, we took all of the SRAM stuff out and converted them to G model F-111's. The RAAF received a few of those aircraft is from what I understand. I also worked B-52G's and H's. The tail guns are no longer installed on them.

Actually, Apart From the Mini-Sub Attack, Sydney Was Also Shelled Fairly Heavily From the Mother-Ship of the Subs. The Shells Fell From Dover Heights to Bondi and Rose Bay, Amongst Other Localities! Sydney People Were Highly Alarmed, Anticipating a Follow-up Invasion; The Girls Working in Department Stores like Mark Foys and David Jones Were Sent Home, But Many Were Seen Congregating on the Steps of Mark Foys, Some Crying! The Panic Was Quite Palpable in the City! Mark Foys is Now a Court Complex.

Excellent informative video Paul that museum looks great I remember seeing the F-111’s over here a couple of times doing there famous dump and burn routine. Australia is on my bucket list it is going to take a lot of planning to tour the country and take in all those aviation museum did have a short 2 week holiday back in 2002. Very sad to see the awful floods in eastern Australia I’m guessing the areas hit by drought are not getting any of this rainfall that they desperately need? Thanks for posting always enjoy your videos 👍👏😍😎🇬🇧

One thing I noticed on the B-52 was it’s missing the 4 rocket assist engines. Hence the term when taking off 4 burning 8 turning.

Never heard of jato/rato on the buffs, on b47's yes. Also, never heard of '4 burning, 8 turning' in regards to the b52, i think you are referring to the b36. I think you are rewriting history or you are confusing b47 and and b36 types.
