Tourette-Ish: A Cursing Brain? And Life.

Finally getting my review done about the book I've been talking about - note: I was not paid to review this book. It's just something I took a gamble on and wanted to talk about :-) Also, National Novel Writing Month! Traveling plans! Life in a nutshell! You really remind me of Linda Cardellini, she's an actress who got famous for a show called Freaks and Geeks. Mixed with, apparently, a parrot 🐦 😁 Good luck on your trip, it seems like long drives trigger a lot of neurological conditions

I actually had a really great week... up until about yesterday. I think the fatigue is starting to catch up with me, which leads to the downward spiral of, "sleep deprivation... more tics... more sleep deprivation... more tics." We're in some nice digs for the next few days though. Hoping getting some rest this weekend will help with the week-long adventure of heading back in the direction of home. Also good news, hubby will be along to do a lot of the driving after the weekend, so I might even be able to take a NAP on the drive!

@@MelodyLittle That's good to hear! It's so strange how the mind works, especially when sleep deprived. I was fascinated by your realization you didn't actually have coprolalia. So many factors that neurologists just slap labels on and sedate and then go to sleep at night feeling like a god. Glorified bloodletters and snake oil salesmen.

Whoa I really want to read this now. 1) A lot of the psychological stuff that happened with Tourette's (minus the sexual stuff) is happening to people with ME right now and the parallels are creepy. It's also just something we keep doing with anything we don't understand which is frustrating. 2) Omg that last passage was SO GOOD. I literally just started gesturing to the empty room when you read that lol. There is actually such a huge stigma against people with coprolalia within the TS community and I RESENT it. People talk about us like we're this scary other they couldn't bear to become. It's also always, always, always represented as shouting or screaming curse words along with other descriptors that serve to other us ("You know, I don't have that crazy form of tourette's where I shout stuff."). It's like this lateral ableism that reeks of "Don't worry, I'm not THAT kind of disabled". Ugh. I should write a blog post on this. It occurs to me that I apparently have a lot of pent up words on this topic lol.

I'm definitely planning on reading it again. I had a part of the video I ended up cutting out just because it was running so long, but I talked about my favorite patient referenced in the book. He's the best and I looooooved his no-nonsense "No, this is stupid" attitude (and he was only like... 10 or 12 at the time). Seriously worth the read just to find him :-D
