Along with touring Zoo Med, we had the unforgettable experience of touring the Museum of Aquarium and Pet History with Gary Bagnall! In this video, he shows and teaches us about uranium glass fish bowls, mermaid tanks, bird cage strollers, and much more! If you think we should go back for another episode to learn about more of these long-since decommissioned pet products, let us know!

As a person with ADHD, I love seeing people with a life-long hyperfocus, who eventually go "eh, I'll open a museum". It's magic little places like these, born of one person's passion, that stores so much social history. Gary is a wonderful guide to his very, very wonderful museum

I was going to comment that it's most likely autistic hyperfocus since it's clearly very deep and long-term, but another commenter beat me to it. But yeah, autistic hyperfocus has been responsible for a lot of cool historical preservation for sure

Another fun fact, Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice had a snake named Emily Spinach! I think about that once a day, and obviously Emily was destined to work with reptiles!

Alice Roosevelt was a wild and exciting woman, definitely her father’s daughter. She gave absolutely zero damns about what anyone thought, and I admire that about her. And Theodore hands-down has to be one of the greatest and most interesting US President who ever lived.

I agree! It was super interesting to see how pets have been housed through the years. Most of the enclosures would be considered "cruel" compared to minimum sizes nowadays. I still think the stroller cage could be modified to work for a bird, in the correct temperature parameters of course and not necessarily for long distances; a short jaunt to the mailbox or round the yard wouldn't be out of the question in my opinion. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Monterey Bay aquarium is one of if not the most ethical and conservation focused aquariums in the world, they do a lot of awesome conservation work particularly with their local sea otters. I haven’t been there in a few years the isopods are definitely a new thing, I’ll have to go back there sometime soon and check them out lol!

As an Austrian when you said ‚Wienerschnitzel‘ I was thinking about our traditional dish of schnitzl out of calf meat. The name was even written the same but the restaurant was as far from a Viennese one as can be. 😂

It’s a deliberate play on the name. It’s not uncommon for Americans to hear of “wiener schnitzel” and think it’s a hot dog/sausage dish. Plus, if I recall the restaurant was founded in the 60s when most American palates were much more narrow than they are today. Most Americans back then (especially those with no German or Austrian roots) wouldn’t be familiar with actual Wiener schnitzel. I grew up with the restaurant and with my grandma making schnitzel (but not Wiener schnitzel) occasionally, so I never made the connection until I was older, lol.

Gary should make a travelling exhibit with items from the Museum! Like when Tinley or other animal conventions happen he should get booth space to have an exhibit at the convention so people can come in and learn about enclosures of the past and Pet history...also to donate to his museum as well. It sounds like it'd be a good learning experience and be a good way to bring in money to his museum, however I'm not sure how much that all would cost.

I just started collecting vintage hamster cages about a year ago and I cannot describe to you how excited I was to see those 1800's mouse cages!!!! My oldest is a 1963 (or 68' I didn't have the packaging next to me) hamster/ mouse cage, still with all the original pieces and box!!! It's a dream of mine to find old boxes of hamster food, after I missed out of a NIB hartz set that came with the original food, bedding, and chew toys that had to have been from the 70's - 80's

@jvseventeen
@jvseventeen Жыл бұрын
That just gave me the idea for a bird park, like a dog park but for birds. It'd have to be a covered area like they've got at a lot of zoos and conservation areas but that could be really cool if you had a large-ish community of bird-owners in a given area. For security, you'd probably need to do an "airlock" style door system, and make it like a lot of public dog parks where you have to have a pass/card to get in. The card certifies that you're responsible for your pet and what it does, and that it has had any relevant or necessary shots/etc.

Your question of the day has a very interesting answer. Before the "W" existed the letter was written out as either two U's or two V's. They were eventually combined into a new letter, and you can see some fonts use two V's and some use two U's to make the W. Most languages actually pronounce the W as double V whereas English pronounces it as double U.

He's from Oklahoma, and he asked me what it was, I didn't know, I haven't eaten meat in 20 years, plus he was in FFA, so he knew meat cuts, like all of them. So, I think we googled it. It's the piece under the sirloin and top sirloin. But that's when I found out Tri Tip doesn't appear in other states east of here.

Y’all talking about how you always bring the cold with you whenever you travel is the complete opposite of my family. As a Texan with family in the Midwest, we have always brought the hot humid with us on vacation

I LOVE the adventures of Emily and Ed shows! The Museum of pet care was so cool! I grew up on Long Island and loves to visit Sagamore Hill, Teddy Roosevelt's home aka the summer White House!

That aquarium looks awesome! The pet history museum is really interesting too. I wonder if those stroller cages would be better for a reptile...

As a native of the Central Valley in California which is about 90 minutes from Monterey, CA, you didn't bring the rain with you. It rains a lot there no matter the time of year. Weird too that what I see as a normal snail is considered a giant garden snail.

Bubble Gum Alley has been in San Luis Obispo since my parents were kids. I’m almost 50 and remember it when I was a little kid. They actually protected it when they made all the businesses in San Luis do seismic retrofitting after the earthquake in 2003, lol. Cool to see you guys visiting and filming places in my home county. The elephant seals and sea lions are actually too much of a success story. They’re quite overpopulated in several areas on the West Coast now and are causing lots of problems with the fishing industry and due to their continued protected status there is no management plan in place to control the population. They’re a nightmare when you’re fishing, they’ll steal your fish right off your hook and you’ll just reel up a head, lol.

Υou can still make or buy a little carnival wheel for your small parrot/softbilled bird. I know a lot of people whose birds love them and I can't wait to try them out for my birds. Some really enjoy going round and round, while others use them as regular perches. Fun to watch, you can find videos online. I wonder how bg and sturdy one would have to be for a bird like Cheyenne!

Oh wow! Cool trip! I loved the museum, and could have spent several hours scouring all the shelves and corners. I lived in Santa Cruz when the aquarium was built and still list it among one of the best places to visit, on earth! Glad you had an opportunity to see it.

i have two budgies, and you have no idea how badly i want an improved and safe version of that stroller cage. swap out the bare wires for more secure, plastic-wrapped metal, make it much bigger, give it some optional shade, and a bunch of perches and toys, and I could see a world where that'd be a great way to get your small birds some sun 🌞 if only i knew metalwork......

Couldn't you just strip down a modern stroller, so droppings wouldn't get in the fabric, and add chicken wire to the top and some perches?

@@calliew311 strollers in general aren't exactly bird proof, i'm afraid. they're also too small and claustrophobic for just about any bird to really feel comfortable in. a lot of it would need to be custom. like where your head's at, tho!

I'm a non reptile owning person, will probably never have any as I've never had any real desire...but if I did I have a soft spot for beardies and geckos. I deliberately preface that so as to add weight to the fact 3ish years ago Snake Discovery popped up in my feed and I became instantly hooked. I love learning about fauna and flora but the shinning thing that came through and had me coming back religiously is down to the personalities of Ed and Emily combined with just how genuinely warm and authentic people. So I've been coming back like clock work for the past 3 years and the funny thing was I remember a comment left in one video expressing the same sentiment as I have and how they had been watching for 3 years... so if they are still followers of Ed and Emily they'd been watching you for 6 years. I'd like to think maybe there is someone who has just started following you that they will experience the same longevity too. So a big thank you to Ed and Emily. Much love from Australia ❤ PS... I wish I could taste Ed's brisket......
