I had moved to London from the States a couple months before the Helsinki gig and decided to go. Unfortunately I have really bad ADHD and while I booked a flight and airbnb I realized a week before the show that I forgot to get tickets to the concert, and it was sold out. All week I monitored Finnish ticket resale websites and couldn't find anything available. The morning of the show I arrived in Helsinki and was in the line to go through customs and checked the resale website for the millionth time and 1 ticket was for sale for even less than retail, I was literally shaking trying to go through all the sign up prompts on the site just trying to buy it in time. Fortunately I got it and got to the show and it was a blast. I'm the guy in the front row obnoxiously recording the performance of Vital Transformation at the end of the video, but Mahavishnu Orchestra is my favorite band of all time and I couldn't resist catching a snippet of it.

Kudos to you, that's a story you won't forget.
@tn9tz7 ай бұрын
In case this ever happens to you again: even if you don't manage to get a ticket from a re-sale website, in my experience it's quite common in Finland that someone in (or near) the queue has a ticket to sell. Things happen - not everyone always shows up. So especially if you've come so far already, it might be worthwhile to go and check out the queue - perhaps you can get a ticket from there.
@goneaerial417 ай бұрын
@@tn9tz I was definitely going to go try picking one up from a scalper if I didn't find one sooner. I appreciate the tip though!

This brought back memories. I wish I could have vlogged my euro tours back in the day. When I was touring, it was ALL THIS, but imagine...NO CELL PHONES. No smartphones whatsoever back then, but our US cells wouldn't work in EU. We'd have to use "internet cafes" and crash university computer rooms. They used to do this thing where they insist you eat after sound check, before you go on. You'd be starving, and the food would be free (amazing too--you don't get this in the US or UK...UK hates artists compared to EU). But problem is we'd eat so much because we wouldn't know when we'd have food again (we had no money of course), so when we'd play we'd be so sluggish and have to fake a ton of energy. Then yeah, get on a train with 500lbs of gear, only to miss a flight, which, in EU, then don't replace your tickets--you have to buy all new flights if you missed it--even if it's the airport's fault. When you check your bags, you are likely to not have your stuff arrive on time. We played more than one "dj shows" where we'd have to throw on a backing cd and pretend to play another band's instruments. Oof...just thinking about it. I have so many stories. From midnight beach parties in Italy to getting detained in Moscow. I'm so grateful I got the experience!!!!

Context: I'm a sound engineer in The Netherlands. I'm so happy for you that you are well received in the venues over here. I agree; most of them are a blast and hospitable to work in. And I'm genuinely sorry for Oeteldonk and the *BASS* taxi-drivers. There was a big culture shift in mindset during the transition from official taxi companies to Uber drivers. P.S. The rest of the Netherlands also hates Oeteldonk/carnival. You either love it or you hate it.

Would it ever make financial sense to hire a company to handle the logistics of a band tour? For instance, the business would take your gear the second the show is done, and then their soul mission is to make sure it all arrives at the next venue early and intact. I imagine that would take a huge stress off your shoulders, but would the cost outweigh the benefit?

When in Germany ask for a "Lasttaxi" (literlly "load taxi"), better call for a local one while stll on the train, as you probably have to wait for it to arrive. These are special taxis for heavy loads. I guess there is something similar in all countries in Europe.

The reason for carnaval in November is that 11 is considered the mad number, so the season (yes, it's a season) starts on the 11th of the 11th, at 11:11. It's when the council of 11 (of course) meets and the new prince is announced. That's the guy who's (kindof) in charge of the city when the REAL carnaval happens.

That moment at 8:46 , i went through a very similar one going from Montreal to Tucson with a connecting flight in Chicago. The flight was delayed by an hour and we stayed on the tarmac for another hour waiting and then getting the plane de-iced. Of course we missed the flight in Chicago and had to negociate to get a transfer from another airline if we wanted to leave the same day. We managed to visit downtown Chicago a bit and arrived in Tucson just in time to get our rental car before they closed :D The same damn delayed flight thing happened AGAIN on the way back. United Airlines suuuuuuucks!

Not sure if the culture is different in Europe but typically flight attendants are very familiar with the layout of the airports they stop at, and sometimes will call in a late flight to delay connecting flights. Not sure if these benefits are when you stick with one airline but I would imagine they would want to provide good service.
