Another absolutely delightful addition to the growing compendium of Michael Delaware videos capturing both the beauty and history of Battle Creek. The "challenge," in my view, is an excellent idea. To see such an edifice arise from the near-ashes is indeed a glory to behold. So often so many decry the loss of local treasures--and that's been avoided in the advent of The Milton. Keep on keepin' on, Michael!!!

I was born in Battle Creek in 1946. Moved to California in 1957. My uncle worked in the bank back then. Have good memories going to visit him.

Here's a rather funny incident involving the Milton building when it was called Security National Bank in the 1960's. I was born and raised in Battle Creek. In probably the mid 60's a bunch of us male teenagers gathered at a friend's house for an overnight stay about a mile from downtown B.C. In the early morning hours around 1:30 a.m. some genius said hey let's go climb the Security Bank building I know how to get up on it. That sounded interesting to about 8 of us. By the way none of us had been drinking etc. that night. So we walked downtown early a.m. when we got there the kid led us to the back of the JC Penny store next to the bank building. Up the fire escape we went. That led us to the banks fire escape, and up we went to the top of the Security Bank Building we scampered at around 3a.m. pretty neat great view we had looking around the city and down to street level. There was about a 3 foot flat ledge surrounding the top of the building. One of the genius kids decided it would be neat to climb on that ledge and take a stroll around the perimeter. So as we looked down on the street there appeared a group of people gathered looking up, like they were looking at Superman. Evidently the bars had closed for the night. Next thing we know there were Cops coming up the JC Penny fire escape with guns drawn. Oh Oh a friend said follow me I know how to get out of here. So down we went and he led me to another fire escape which took us down right behind the fire station. So off we scampered headed back to the overnight kids house. Bingo Bango Bongo we had made a getaway yee haaa!!!! Well not so fast there bubba, when we got back to the kids house the cops were already there. Some of the kids had been caught. We all got off with a good lecture though. They thought we were robbing the bank. It sure was a lot of fun. Oh and one more thing. My Mother worked in that Bank building. I never did tell her about the adventure I don't think.

Grew up in Battle Creek and went here many times when it was Security National Bank. I remember going in the vault with my dad to access the Safe Deposit Box. My uncle worked there most of his life in maintenance.

Thanks Michael! I love historic theatres, buildings, hotels - I toured the Woolworth Building in NYC once... fantastic.

That is one I have always wanted to tour. I have not been to NYC since 2014, and every time I went I was there on business and never had time to tour the architecture. Definitely plan to do that in the future.

Very nice job, Michael. I visited the Milton at the open house, I was overwhelmed at the restoration that was done. Your video & narration enabled me to absorb more of the detail of the project. Battle Creek is fortunate the Mcfee's respected the history of the building, and helped save it from demolition. Thank you for a nice presentation.

I think the whole community should toast the McFee's this holiday season. Thank you for your kind remarks.

Have you ever looked into the kingman ave. Castle in post addtion? I always wondered about the history of that place.

Yes, I have done some research on it. I may do a video on it in the future. It is a private residence, so I hesitate on this, as I don't want to create problems for the owners with people showing up unannounced.

Funny how the empyrian design & the grand vaulted architecture of this small town bank tower exactly coincided w the great National Depression from Midwest grain farming dynamics. How much did it cost to build that bank?
