Tourist warning - Bali Governor to Limit Tourism Numbers

Tourism Levies and Limiting Numbers, Bali government continues to crack down on disrespectful tourists and visa violators.
This is an important video as these policies are sure make a very serious change to the tourism numbers.

I’ve been going to bali and all around indo since the late 80s surfing. Any time I’ve seen tourists getting to drunk and out of control the locals roll them pretty quick. As for the crappy infrastructure bali has,it could be about time the indo govt starts pumping back some of that tourism money they have been making for the last 40 years back into bali. Indonesia is a very wealthy country, it’s the government that chooses not to spend that wealth on its people and infrastructure

I have been living in Bali since 1999. Moved up into the mountains a year ago to escape the disaster that has become seminyak, kerobokan, Canggu, etc. The idea the governor put forth to no longer allow Russians in on VOA has been scrapped. The idea of putting potential tourists on a waiting list has very little traction, and will be dropped very quickly. I love this country, I have an Indonesian wife and family, but the government is completely incompetent. They govern the way some people cook pasta. Throw it against the wall and see if it sticks. a few years ago, they made a few streets in Seminyak 1 way traffic, Mertanadi was one of them. it lasted 4 days until they canceled that dumb idea. They are allowing more hotels and shopping malls to be built, even though Pastika, the governor before Koster issued a moratorium on hotel building. The only important things is money. Koster himself announced he had a goal of 15 million tourists annually by 2025. How is that going to happen with a lottery system? Finally, there was talk of banning tourists from renting motorbikes and cars. That idea was floated around and sank within 2-3 weeks. They have no idea what they are doing. So whatever they are talking about today will be forgotten very soon, as they concoct another dumb idea. just wear a helmet, be respectful, don't drive drunk, and have an international driving license with a motorbike endorsement, and enjoy your holiday.

I rented a moped in Greece. I fell quite hard on the asphalt, which did not provide the grip we are used to in western Europe. I also saw the same asphalt in Indonesia, so I didn't rent a moped, but took a taxi. Just use your head,and respect there laws and religions.

My husband and I are visiting from the US in September....thank you for keeping it real, and keeping us aware. We are excited to visit Bali and experience the culture through the locals who live there. It's a shame to hear how some of the tourists have been mistreating the local people, cultures, and values.... Hopefully something can be done soon before drastic measures have to be put in place.

Thx for updates Muzza. Visa restrictions for troublesome residents of certain countries will certainly help. The long suffering, patient Balinese locals complain every year to us, about these particular ethnic groups. I will happily pay a tourist tax, and as visitors who stay for 2 months, am also happy to book well in advance. We are self funded retirees who may not spend as much as these other tourists, but we return time and time again, know how to fully respect Balinese customs and law, share our Aussie warmth and humour, and support our Balinese friends during every financial crisis. And that is why WE are welcomed with open arms while some others are merely tolerated. Keep up the good work!

You are correct Muzza if I have to pay a $150 USD tax we will switch our Annual Bali trip to Vietnam or other Asian Countries and we are amongst those that do have an International Drivers Licence and insist on wearing helmets etc as over 50 yo’s. Keep up the informative Vlogs.

I applaud the government to protect their culture and island. I had every intention to retire in Bali. But I’ve taken pause for the reasons you’ve discussed. As they make efforts to remove the yobo tourists I believe that will attract a more spiritual and respectful tourist that is more inline with the culture of the Balinese. Well spoken Murray. It is unfortunate the actions of the few make the greatest negative impact and regulatory changes. I would hope the individuals that disrespect and misbehave to these extremes would reconsider their actions and behaviors, unfortunately, throughout the world tightening restrictions and laws are made to manage the few “bad apples”. Murray you are 100% right and I 100% agree with you . I have been going to Bali regularly over 30 years . I mainly stay in Sanur. The behaviour of Eastern European people is atrocious. I have seen them breaking the road rules and leaving places with out paying . The stress and the emotional impact on local business really upset me. They way they speak to staff is appalling. No respect at all . I think the only way is restricted visa applications. Hate to think how many over stayers are there . Something has to be done , seriously. We both know the real Bali. Thanks Murray As you know I watch your channel and several more from Bali. This is because Bali is my second home. I fell in LOVE with Bali when I first visited in 2015 and up until Covid have visited sometimes twice a year. I totally agree with your summery of what Bali is, a Spiritual haven, wonderful people, who are respectful of each other, and visitors. Glorious natural beauty from beaches, waterfalls, mountains and so much more. I love and totally respect the locals and all of the varied cultures in Bali and Indonesia. I Pray for the people that things work out for them. I hope that rather than having to impose major new rules which might change Bali and have a huge impact on its people, they stand united and in force the current laws. I believe everyone should respect and be lawful of the culture and laws of where they are. I would much rather see people who are not respectful be punished and if they were behaving poorly even deported and not let back. I Pray and wish Bali can become a balanced respected tourist destination (possibly my Home one day) I enjoyed visiting and Wilde value visiting again.

Some of those eastern europeans were on my flight from KL to Bali a few weeks ago. The bad behavior started before the flight took off and at one point I thought there'd be a fight between them and the flight attendants. When we landed police were waiting with pictures of the goofs on their phones and took them away as soon as we de-planed.

Excellent update Muzza. Heartbreaking that the levels of disrespect for Bali astonishingly beautiful gentle culture has got to a point where government feels the needs to intervene. Perhaps they need harsher more immediate sanctions for those breaking the rules. This would initially be resource intensive and costly but the message would get through that it is not tolerated. And it would not be as costly as tourist caps. Anyway just some thoughts.

This is a joke. When 80% of your economy is dependent on Tourism, you want to play a dicey game like this? Instead of hiring more police, they decided to just ban more tourist & charge extra tax. You don't see tourists acting like a crazy person in Hawaii or Gold Coast. Why? Because there is a rule of law and there is good governance. This is just lazy governing from the local government. Plenty of Islands in Thailand & Malaysia are competing with Bali. If Bali continue to do this, they will lose in the long run.

You’re 100% right Muzz , flew back in on Friday nite and I actually think it’s quite busy atm. But you’re right in saying any such restrictions will only hurt the locals…there’s far too many drivers , shopkeepers , hotels etc etc that rely on the tourism $$ and we know how bad to was for locals during Covid , there is still many closed shops in tourism areas , let’s tourists also means less $$ to charities that help locals too. The simple solution would be to target the small percentage of bad tourists and make it harder for them to enter or deport straight away…let’s face it you don’t t see a lot of authorities about to stop such behaviour . Imposing high tourist taxes / fees will definitely discourage tourists from coming and countries like Thailand and Vietnam will be only too willing to welcome more tourists…from Bali , Perth now has direct flights to the Philippines as an example. “They” need to be careful of the next decision regarding tourism , it’s on the precipice and I’ve been 30+ times now. Keep up the good work buddy.

Great video and very informative. More police stops would be a greater deterrent. I’ve returned yesterday and there were only two police stops I saw. They were pulling up those without helmets. I saw many tourists still not wearing helmets and misbehaving on scooters and bikes which shows the message hasn’t gotten through. It’s a complex issue dealing with misbehaviour but police on the roads pulling up those not wearing helmets will net some results.

I have just returned home from a 2 week break in Bali. Although I really enjoyed my holiday, I don't think I will hurry back anytime soon. The biggest issue for me was there was an age limit on most activities. I am a pensioner and if you are over 60, you can't climb Mount Batur to see the sunrise. As I was travelling alone, I found it very difficult to find activities I would enjoy. I did manage to enrol in a Balinese cookery class which was very enjoyable and also went to an Inclusive drag show, with tarot reading and sign language lesson, but I had to find them on Trip Advisor. I also managed to see a Spiritual healer. The hotel transport was very expensive and two thirds of my holiday money was taken up just trying to get somewhere. I did feel a bit isolated as I was travelling alone. I felt so sorry for the taxi drivers constantly asking if I needed a taxi. I only encountered one scam on my trip.

Muzza like the video but take it from someone thats been going to Bali since 1979, the governor of Bali has NO say in who or how many tourist are allow into Indonesia. Over the years we have had the ideas on no bikini, no alcohol, must be married to stay in Hotels, but Jakarta is were the the rules are made. I am back in October and will take photos of all the places you can buy alcohol in Jawa, Supermarkets, corner stores, Restos, no different than Bali(except no bogans). I only stay in Bali 1 or 2 nights too many tourist for me, so I stay in Jawa and will retire in Jawa, anyway if i stay over night in Bali I will try and catch up. Hope you have a great wedding, weddings in Indonesia are the best.

Great point as the issues with certain European travellers and certain influencers have sadly made Bali a place of people not being respectful. Yea there have been some Australians (quite recently) seem to not be increasing but more dropping. I agree with the motorcycles rules 100% and I agree with the clamping down on the people doing the wrong thing. I believe it will be very difficult to apply these proposed booking rules to tourist, as many will just go elsewhere. Bali has always been a wonderful holiday destination for Aussies which may actually push tourists to Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian destinations. Will be interesting to see what happens🙏

Suksma Waz! Been coming to Bali almost yearly since the late 90s. Non drinker. Might have gone to a club 3-4 times in 25 years. The Bali i experience as a non-drinker seems vastly different to the problems that have been increasing year upon yeat. It is a profoundly spiritual place and it's culture needs to be protected. Hate the yobbos that have always been there but seem to be multiplying and getting packed in like a school of fish lately. Every rice paddy being filled in for more gentrified villas. My next trip there is this weekend and i;m more wary than i've ever been. Very curious how this will play out - I pray for the locals sake they find small business friendly solutions.

Bali Governor has no control of tourism numbers. He often mouths off but it comes to nothing. Laws and regulations are mainly made in Jkt.

We have our next trip booked for December. Unfortunately I predict that it may be our last trip to Bali for a while. Bali seems to be losing its relaxed laid back charm that it used to have - too many upscale, fancy and expensive restaurants now being opened every second store.

i totally agree with ur view points and I fully support the Indonesian and Balinese authorities in their plans to better manage the influx and quality of tourists entering Bali. Itis the most unique island in the world and sadly for all it’s rich culture and deep spirituality, it has become more famous for cheap booze and drunken behaviour. And at the moment it’s the Russians and East Europeans who are trashing the island using their cash and bad attitude to ruin the island. Laws should be stricter and punishment should be swift for thosewho think they can just go there and disrespect the people and it’s culture. I’m so sick of it. Yes restrict the numbers and manage the entry better of touriss and impose a standard of behaviour and respectability so that they can keep outthe trash from infecting the island. #savebali

My first ever visit to Bali, years ago, made me refuse to go back. The first encounter was with locals at the airport pushing me into a taxi (possibly), then walking around markets etc the locals were aggressive in their approach. Then I observed the out of control tourists, unfortunately mostly Aussies. My husband has booked us a week in Nusa Dua, which I have my doubts about, but hopefully I'll just have a quiet week at the beach. Hopefully!

You should love it , local taxi drivers I've heard arnt allowed to call out and hassle travellers at the airport . I've been to Bali about 7 times and never seen what you have described with bad behaviour or aggressive sellers they are usually pretty polite if you just say no your not interested. We generally stay in Nusa Dua and Ubud it's a lovely relaxing area I hope this trip changes your perspective and it will be a better experience.

I hope that the governor thinks about the people of Bali and the economy first. Here in Aotearoa NZ we look at Bali as a holiday destination and I hope my people do behave and respect the culture just like my culture here.

My mate works at a well known motel in Legian where lots of tribal NZ people stay & they are the worst for breaking the toilets off the floor and or bogging them. She said, Management are at a stage where they want to ban them from staying. Breakfast time in Bali is suppose to be a culture quiet time to spend with family before heading out for the day & she said at breakfast they are pigs that sound like roosters is the translation.

As a Bali resident, I am for these regulations. There are too many tourists here. and even though Bali's economy heavily relies on tourism, it would be healthy for the island to give it some breathing room and recover.

Thinking of Bali while sitting in front of the heater in cold Melbourne. Hope to be there soon. Wonder if they've cleaned up the taxi rank at the airport. I walk outside the airport or go to the domestic terminal to get a taxi. They've got a lot of work to do to get higher quality tourists.

Morning Muzza, we’re over inSanur at the moment and all seems well as regards to loutish behaviour and not many from the eastern side of Europe. However, went to Uluwatu yesterday and there all over the place. Even down to one guy swearing at a Monkey that stole his hat in the temple. I really hope that they can sort the situation out without restrictions on entry but I think they’re going to have to do something.

Hi Muzza, first time viewer. You popped up up after watching The Monkey's Damien and Winnie vid. First time we went to Bali police at the airport with semi automatics slung over their shoulders, jimbaran beach had no restaurants on the beach. It was paradise. It is still paradise if as a traveller you want it to be. The problem in Bali is the same in many destinations because in reality it is so cheap to fly anywhere. 35 years ago it was $3000 for 7 days including airfares to get there flying Qantas for two people.. Not many options back then. Because it is so cheap in reality now all the bogans can afford it and this is world wide. Would like to comment on the government but better not to. Will be there end of July with 14 pax. 3 generations of family, will drink too much, eat too much but still respect the beauty that Bali is.
