Old Photographs And Footage Of Cowdenbeath Fife Scotland

Old photographs and footage of Cowdenbeath, a town and burgh in West Fife. The town grew up around the extensive coalfields of the area and became a Police Burgh in 1890. It is alleged that the infamous graverobbers Burke and Hare sourced some of their cadavers from local cemetery, to supply to the Scottish surgeon Robert Knox for dissection. When the actual name of Cowdenbeath came into being is not known, but it is thought to have originated when turnpike roads were first made and that it marked the spot of an inn and later of a tollhouse erected in the 17th century. Cowdenbeath first came into prominence around 1820 as a stop on the north bound coaching route to Perth, Perthshire. My 1st cousin 3 times removed was John Brunton who built Brunton House in Cowdenbeath. He ran Thistleford Farm and also married Isabella McLean and ran the Cowdenbeath Inn which was also known as Brunton Hotel. He also bred award winning Clydesdale horses. I am hoping one day to travel to Cowdenbeath to visit his grave and walk around where Thistleford farm was (now just an empty lot with a highway and homes built on its former land.

Anyone would think that was a london town, its so full of people and lots going on. Today its such a shell of a town . Lost all its people lost a great deal of community and houses are disappearing to be left behind only empty fields once again.

Thanks for that. Great photos. I'm always fascinated by all the telegraph poles that sprouted up in Lochgelly too. I've never seen any photos with telegraph wires on the poles though. Any clues on that?
