ER stands for Elizabeth Regina, the first letter is the initial of the current reigning monarch which is Elizabeth II. When Charles succeeds as king in the future it will become CR = Charles Rex. Note: Regina and Rex is latin for Queen and King.

what is the significance of the "ER" on your uncle's uniform? I'm not from England and am curious.

Mike Hruby It's the Royal Ciper, it stands for Elizabeth Regenia, Regenia meaning Queen. The II in the middle stands for the 2nd, so obviously Queen Elizabeth II. When Charles acends to the throne it will be CIIIR, for Charles the third, although Regenia will change to Rex which is Latin for King.

Wanderer628: Elizabeth Regina rather than Elizabeth Regenia. The II stands for Secundus - Latin for Second. Only will be CIIIR if Charles choses Charles as his regnal name, although he has said he may chose George as his regnal name, in honour of his maternal grandfather King George VI, thus will be GVIIR.
