You can get hardwood from hardwood stumps north end of the zone you build midhaven in, also alot more in other zones.

Very cool info about the free iron shovel, thanks! I got the free iron pickaxe on the starter island (western coast caves, just past the spider nest, against a stone pillar) and was desperate for a shovel. 👍

you can trade with traders who pop up at the village they like to give iron tools i got steel tools from them after the third trade
