Appreciate the review. I’m just a little disappointed that automotive reviewers always act like Nissan doesn’t do anything the best. Most of the technology we have in vehicles today was pioneered by Nissan. Variable valve timing in the 80s, the Maxima had infrared sonars that read the road in front of the car to adjust the shocks, in 80s. Adaptive cruise control introduced in the 2002 Infiniti Q45 around view monitoring, and self driving at the beginning of the first decade of the 2000s all started with Nissan not Toyota, or Honda. I worked in the automotive industry for years and many manufacturers benchmark Nissan engines 4, 6, and 8 cylinders because of reliability, smoothness, and power output. It’s ashamed that they don’t get any props from these reviewers. I almost don’t want to watch anymore because I know what direction they are going to go. I just want to hear some honesty. Non of these guys say anything about Toyota’s engine failures over the last 25 years lots of them, but we don’t hear it, or Honda’s transmission failures, the same as Nissans radiators same manufacturer same problems with Honda transmission and even more on Odyssey, and pilot. Sorry to put this on this site. But I’m tired frankly of hearing the hype of Toyota and Honda while they all look for every missed detail from Nissan. The Frontier is a nice truck one of the best midsize and the V6 engine will out last and be more powerful than the others. I’ve got 420,400 miles on my 2001 VG33 never a problem on the drive train original AC.

Well your not really correct in your statements completely. Fiat was the first car manufacture to offer VVT in a production car and it even had the lift feature. Adaptive type Cruise Control was first introduced in a production car by Mitsubishi. Most Asian brands are known to be Duplicators, not Innovators. Asian brands are great at taking great ideas by the Europeans and American brands then reverse engineer the tech into something more reliable. These are facts on most automotive innovations going back 100 years. Having owned many Nissans from new: 1990 Z, 2001 Sentra SE, 2005 Titan, 2007 Pathfinder, 2015 Titan, and currently a 2019 Frontier Nissan Trucks have been very underrated and are a great value compared to the competition. The Car line though has been plagued by unreliability issues mainly around the CRAP JATCO CVT's used across the car lineup. This has caused Nissan reliability and reputation to suffer and give Nissan a black eye. Now a days when people think Nissan? They think Crap CVT's. The Trucks though have always been a solid and reliable choice.
@bigbrowntrout19 ай бұрын
I agree with you about people always throwing Nissan shade. We have two Toyotas a 2012 & 2013 and one of them is very good, the other has had numerous problems. We also have an '08 Altima with the dreaded CVT (oh no! 🙄) and I would say it's more reliable than our '12 Venza. We also had an '08 Pathfinder that was bombproof. I'm not saying Toyota is bad but I do think Nissan never gets the credit that's due.
@eppyz9 ай бұрын
@@bigbrowntrout1 I appreciate your reply. I too have owned many brands of vehicles over the years including Toyota and Nissan. My main reason for buying a Nissan Frontier in early 2020 really came down to price vs the Toyota Tacoma. My wife and I were looking at the Frontier Pro 4X a 2019 model that was left over from 2020 due to the Pandemic many brands were not selling much, so we looked at Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road and Toyota wanted $46k and would not budge on price. Next door was Nissan, they had a Pro 4X Frontier with Prem pack on sale for $31,600. That is a $15k difference. With the Nissan we also got these options that the Toyota didn't have: Leather seats, heated seats, sunroof/moonroof, prem audio, navigation, 4 wheel disc brakes, more HP, more TQ, Spray in bed liner, trailer package. When we went back to Toyota to negotiate they called us liars for getting the Frontier that cheap. After buying the Frontier we drove it over to Toyota and showed them our paperwork. The sales people there could not believe it. So people can say whatever they want, but we have had our Frontier for 4 yrs now, has not been in the shop once, I do the minor services myself and its been an awesome truck. Plus we saved $15k over the less equipped Toyota. Yet people still say the Toyota is the "better" truck. Well, I will just agree to disagree with them.

I have a ‘22 SV model with the crew cab and 5ft bed. I’ve towed a Hyundai Elantra on a tandem axle (Uhaul) car hauler from Florida to Pennsylvania. In ever scenario, the truck surprised me. The engine braking in tow mode is surprisingly useful, it felt confident towing “heavier” weight on the highway, the acceleration was plenty to maneuver around in traffic, and the fuel consumption was expected (11mpg @60mph. 8mpg @75-80mph). When main thing higher speeds, it wanted to stay around 3,000 rpm’s to maintain speed with the heavier load. I consistently use the truck to tow a tandem axle utility trailer for a UTV, ATV, and dirt bike. Including the bed filled with extra gas, gear etc…running around 3-500lbs tongue weight depending on the load. With this tow setup (around 4,000 lbs and 300lbs in the bed) the truck is able to cruise highway speeds(60 mph) at 2,000 rpm’s, only to downshift for inclines as expected. Overall, the new frontier has really surprised me in it’s “truck stuff” capabilities. The ONLY reason I’d get a different truck is if I need interior space. The backseats get the job done, but if I’m bringing a group of adults out to go riding, they don’t have leg room. They could also drive themselves, so that’s an incident specific “red flag”. Just installed the Redarc TowPro brake controller. VERY easy to install. Plug and play harness available for new model frontiers. Excited to test it. Just wanted an extra bit of braking if I were to trailer in the snow and general peace of mind. I don’t intend to tow anything higher than the promoted tow rating of the vehicle, as equipped stock with no brake controller.

I see you guys added the baby seat metric to you reviews. Kudos as so many of my friends with young kids complain about not having enough room for one especially when they are turned around backwards. But as far as I'm aware you guys are the only ones providing such information on truck reviews. One of my first thoughts after seeing the new Frontier and what Nissan delivered were mixed. On the one hand the Frontier easily matches every other mid size truck in the category now and it looks fantastic. On the other hand Nissan only did what it absolutely had to in order to level up and nothing to raise the bar in the category. Right now the Frontier and the GMC Canton are the best riding and driving of all the mid size trucks and interiors are a toss up but while the ride and handling of both are very good, it doesn't take much to be the leading mid-size truck interior. As for the steering, I think you guys have just been driving such overly boosted setups for so long that it's skewed you perception of what heavy steering really is anymore. The Frontier may be heavier than other vehicles but it's not at all cumbersome or slow. It's sort of like saying 2 pounds is two times heavier than 1 pound, which is true, but it's still not heavy. I'm glad you guys show the squat and don't freak out about it like almost every other review site does. Trucks are designed to squat some. The elevated rear is to allow for settling and a more level ride when there's a lot of weight in the bed. These guys "leveling" their trucks because it looks better and then stating they don't understand why the factory doesn't make them that way don't have a clue what a truck is for.

Backup pic quality may have appeared low because you were backing up directly into sunshine. I have the Nissan backup camera, it's as good as any, and as lousy as any staring into the sun. Also, the further from the rear the ball mount sits, the more downward torque you get . That impacts tongue weight. It's like an extension on a ratchet. That's why the receiver is tucked up underneath, to keep the ball mount closer to the rear end. These things are made to pull a 2.5 ton boat/trailer on a highway, and get good mileage and comfort the rest of the time. Good review. video. Thanks. I liked the power and stability. Great video and great redesign! I’m liking mine so far. Few things negative …no power rear window, poor res of the rear camera and ac in the rear cab. Any insight on leveling kits for the Pro4X?

Check rough country for all your lift kit; they have pretty good stuff.

Well done review fellas. In my last gen ( 2006 ) Frontier, it came with a couple of the utili-track rails also in the floor of the bed. If I were to buy a new one, I would add those into the bed. Looks like the bed hold down bolts are in the same place as before. I use the floor placed tiedowns more often than the sides or front.

Should I get a 21 or a 22 pro 4x? Or neither? I’m thinking 21. Also is the 21 the same as the 20? When I look up a 21 only 20s are showing up! I know the 21 has the new engine but does the 20 have it to?

The new model has the same torque as the VQ40DE out of the last gen Frontier, but has an amazing 50hp more.

I recently purchased same model pro4x luxury in boulder grey. I am worried about long term reliability of vq3.8dd engine. I have heard it is direct injection and not multi port fuel injection. I am worried about carbon buildup in cylinder heads and valves. I am thinking did I made the right decision and worried about the overall brand image of Nissan at the moment. few disappointments no lumbar support and no passenger side automatic seat adjustments. no wireless apple car play, no telescopic steering. few positives, great looks, comfortable seating, good fender sound, wireless charging, leather seats and sunroof. smooth 9 speed automatic transmission. Any vehicle that can tow enough to legally require trailer brakes should come with a trailer brake controller, period.

Your towing test was on a straight road. That is not a valid test! You needed to climb hills and then you can see how well the vehicle is performing.

I bought a Boulder grey Pearl pro-x 4x2. Right off the showroom floor something was loose on the front driver side under the hood. They had to fix it and then do a re-alignment. And you spoke about the backup camera quality. Well mine already went out doesn’t work at all. Waiting on a whole new camera assembly unit they said could take months to come in. So for a truck that hasn’t even hit 1k miles, so far hasn’t been fairing out too well. I didn’t buy Japanese for all these problems especially on a brand new truck!

Stuff happens... I was at the Canadian tire in Kincardine today. There was a shiny black new looking Tesla going to the charging station and the upper ball joint or something failed and crumpled the fender and the splitter. Looked expensive:) Hopefully they will get the bugs worked out for you. All the best!
