Is towing with an A-Frame legal? How much can you tow? What are the pros and cons for towing with a motorhome?
I'm regularly asked questions about the rules and laws for towing another vehicle behind your motorhome. I've toured both the UK and Europe towing either a car or motorbikes, so I've got a decent about of knowledge of what's needed and the pros and cons of towing.

Surely there is a flaw in the argument about using A-Frames in that they are not legal anywhere including the UK because they are not type approved. The UK Government tolerate, or shall we say turn a blind eye to the use of A-Frames so you don't risk prosecution here. Therefore the argument that what is legal in your home country was legal across the EU never applied anyway and you were always at the mercy of the local police. The only way to be legal is to carry a car on a proper trailer.

As to the trailor idea instead of the A frame dont forget to check the gross train weight or you will come unstuck once again .

Like the vid Kat. There are of course different types of A frames. Ones with a braking system and ones without brakes. A car being towed behind a Moho with an A frame becomes a trailer. Trailers over 750kgs need brakes. If brakes are fitted to a trailer(towed car) they must work to a required standard. If you are towing a car behind a Moho using an A frame with no braking system, and with most cars, even small ones, weigh more than 750kgs kerbside weight, nothing can operate the cars brakes, and therefore this set-up is not legal.

I returned from Spain at the weekend. Today 18th April, a letter dropped in to my home. Posted in Spain it wants 100€ from me, reduced to 50€ if paid within the next 20 days. Yes it's a Speeding fine, caught doing 115 in a 100 km zone. I am paying it because whilst some might say they can't collect it, sorry but yes they can and legally enforce collection via the UK Court system. Apart from which I wish to return hassle free to Spain.

You cannot tow another vehicle using an A Frame - in Spain you risk very large fine, the cost of hiring a 'Grua' - specialist recovery flat bed truck. People have been stopped by Trafico, escorted off the road; fined; and had to hire the 'Grua' at their expense. Alternatively buy an 'Ivor Williams' type of trailer,. OR if its been declared 'SORN' to DVLA made to re-tax it there and drive it to the destination. It is actually cheaper to leave the car at home, sell the A frame, and hire a car at your destination.

But.. my one question is.. in the event of adding a tow bar for a single moped.. should the insurance company be informed.. I presume so... and if yes must I presume increase premium..

Powered vehicles cannot tow powered vehicles in the EU, must be trailers, fined in Switzerland and wifey had to drive the car, now have a trailer..
