Here's a story I did in 1992 on the town of Melones, CA now on the site of New Melones Reservoir. The low water level of the lake exposed the remnants of the town usually under water

My Uncle worked for GF Atkinson when they built the New Melones Dam. During building of the road to the surge shaft a pay seam was uncovered, high grading occurred before the whole ledge was blasted off the hillside.

I'm camping there right now, and I had no idea about the history of this reservoir!

Good to hear from you again Dann. I remember you from the '70s listening/watching in Stockton.

I've always been a big fan of Dann, and he and I have something in common: we both worked at the same radio station in Vallejo.

He doesn’t pronounce Melones correctly. I was 18 when they completed the dam. Watched them work on it every week…my dad would pile us into the old station wagon and take a Sunday drive to see the progress. I love seeing this video from days gone by.

There’s no such thing as the town of “New” Melones, just Melones. The reservoir/lake is called New Melones.

Not sure why I titled it that way. Maybe I was tired. 😂 The town of Melones is correctly referenced in the story.

It won't be long now - people dressed in Arab garb with thin white robes, their heads wrapped against the boiling sun, and stranded tourists crawling around all over the place, crawling up to whatever cactus they can find, panting "water, water, water." A hundred years of desert jokes come alive. My favorite joke was the guy who crawled out of the desert and found a swimming pool. He's about to take a drink of water, and the owner says, "I wouldn't drink that, buddy. It's clorinated."
