Jackson Browne did a version of this song in the 1970's ("Running on Empty" album).

I'm gonna play an old folk song from New Orleans called uh, Cocaine Blues. This came from uh, I learned this off a Hoyt Axton record and he said that it came from the first world war when they were treating everybody with cocaine, and then they let it go in New Orleans. So it was like half cocaine freaks instead of two thirds, like it is now. The song features on Hoyt Axton's album "Thunder'N Lightnin"
