Sad song ? No this goes way beyond being a sad song. This song is like a punch in the stomach. I mean this song will scare you. This is what it must feel like to know you are doomed. To know it's all over for you. At the same time it's like a Greek tragedy in that it is cathartic. There is a strange spiritually uplifting feeling you get from it. And the best thing about it is it humanizes the homeless. IT IS THE GREATEST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD.

Townes says his songs aren’t sad. They’re just hopeless.

My wife surprised me with a ticket to the Townes concert in 1996, about 5 months before he died. It was held in an old theatre near the center of downtown. After the show, I purchased "No Deeper Blue" and got him to autograph it for me. I will never forget that night. Rest in peace, Townes.

Met Townes More than a few times…He Always made me Laugh in Different Ways…He was Upright and Extremely Intelligent…but i could See When i Looked Deeply into His Eyes a Deeeep Dark Sadness Troublin’ Him.He Always Laughed Allll that Real Hard Stuff Off. Townes was and Is Soooo Lovable and Unforgettable.

To me there is the bleakness but also some simmering anger and I think you see it in his eyes at times as he sings. I read about people thinking his voice was done by this time but I actually like the thickness from the booze and cigarettes and hard living.

The people don't even know how to respond to the tragedy of life they just heard.I guess it's hits a little too close to home. Now this is the essence of what song should be.If it doesn't contain something we are better off knowing then it serves a lesser purpose.
