In April 1984, I was working as a concierge at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City. I answered a call from a guest's room, and the man on the other end asked where he could get a bottle of whiskey. I told him that was a bit complicated in Salt Lake City, but I offered to get one for him. I walked a few blocks to the state liquor store and delivered the bottle to his room. When the door opened, I realized it was John Prine. I said, "you're John Prine." He said, "that's right." Told him I was a big fan. He said, "do you want to come to the show tonight?" He was playing at Kingsbury Hall on the campus of the U of Utah. I said, "are you kidding." What a show. What a songwriter. What a body of music he created. Thank you, John, for the many memories -- and for a great show in April 1984.

I first discovered her when I went to see him at Carnegie Hall in NYC in 1987 or 1988. I'd never heard of her but she opened for him solo and blew me away. I went on to see her (with her band) twice more in NYC over the next two years and both shows were wonderful- The Bottom Line on West 4th Street and Town Hall in midtown.

I wonder how many songs John had in his pocket when he left us to start his rock and roll band in heaven
