Townes Van Zandt - Snowin' on Raton (Cover)

This week’s cover song: ‘Snowin’ on Raton’ by Townes Van Zandt. This sweet track is featured on his 1987 album ‘At My Window’. This is the only album of his to be recorded in the 80s and was his first album release in 9 years; the previous being ‘Flyin’ Shoes’, released in 1978. By the early 80, Townes was enjoying financial stability due to the success of his songs ‘Pancho and Lefty’ and ‘If I Needed You’ and so took his time releasing more music. By this time, some musicians that were working with him noticed a decrease in Townes’ technical ability, especially when it came to his guitar-playing and vocal abilities. I don’t know if that is true but I do recommend giving the album a listen. ‘At My Window’ is one of my favourite songs ever and I often play it live. Anyway, this song was a joy to learn and I hope you enjoy.

hey! I 100% love your delivery, presentation, and technical skill! (btw there is never a day the wind doesn't blow in amarillo). This comment is on the subject, not your content: I don't feel like you've passed through Raton much. I've always had an ambivalent/neutral attitude toward this song BECAUSE I felt like it was delivered, via the original performer, merely from the perspective of a trucker that fueled up on diesel (and sometimes/often get stuck due to weather) but didn't see the actual reality of the circumstances around him while waiting for his tank to top off. Raton is such an economically and culturally depressed place - long before the 1990's when i passed through there regularly. there is a lot of visible suffering there despite the gov't help the state gives them. I say all this, because I really like how you delivered this song AND I see an opportunity for you to surpass the original artist's success by adding a touch more sadness/despair to the vibe of the piece. I've worked with truckers for the last several decades in that area of the country and I've personally passed through there a lot; i understand the tenuous, delicate hope that this song plays on with a man rationalizing his existence driving the road he's on and the yearning desire to get back to home, but part-and-parcel of his existence is the simultaneous choice to not look at how bad it really is there, because in his context, he has to keep his spirits up ---- there is just a little more emotion to bleed from the song's circumstances beyond what's already there that'd I'd love to see you develop. no pressure, I don't expect it, but there is something really, really good hear that the world would be better for.
