I first heard this song when Nanci Griffith covered it, and later Steve Earle. Seeing Van Zandt's name as the writer of other songs I'd heard lead me to check out his stuff, and ever since he's been my favourite songwriter. There's a purity of sadness, and honesty without self pity that never gets old, and that nobody has matched. I regret I'm too young to have seen him in concert, but every video, recording or cover version is a blessing.

If you're a Townes fan you may have already heard this, but in an interview once he was asked "Why are your songs so sad?" ... to which he replied: "They're not sad. They're hopeless." (my recollection, actual quote may be slightly different).
