Unfortunately since I've been watching you, I knew this day was coming. You have tremendous drive, tenacity, enthusiasm and a wonderful entrepreneurial spirit. You will come back and you will learn from this and be successful. As a business owner who was fortunate to sell my business, I want to show you some areas that led you to this day. First, you focused on "Revenue" and not "Profit". Profit Dollars are KING not Revenue dollars. Secondly, you added way too much expense dollars by growing too fast. A wise CPA asked me when I started my business, "What would you rather have, One more dollar of Revenue or one less dollar in expense?" The answer is one less dollar in expense. You took on too much expense with drivers, trucks, trailers etc. combined with the factors out of your control, rising insurance & fuel costs and shrinking broker rates. Turn in the trucks to Enterprise and sell off what you can. Lastly, the most important thing is your beautiful wife and family and your health. The last time I looked you had all that. You are Blessed! Any company would be lucky to hire you! I can't teach someone the INTERNAL DRIVE you have. That is a gift from Almighty God and you need to recognize that. You are not a failure. To use your words, you just earned an MBA the hard way. Ask the good Lord to give you direction and He will. We signed on with Alex in November. I found Alex to be 100% genuine and honest. Any good feelings I have about this industry are firmly rooted in this guy and his character and integrity. In six months we were never left without a load, never deadheaded more than 200 miles and money was in the bank EVERY Friday morning. I’m sorry to hear this young man. I also went through this sort of things some yrs ago. My business was in sheet metal fabrication and in 07-08 the economy was going down hill the housing market was taken a hit. My supply cost had risen by 60% the house construction was down by 40% in my area. I raised prices to try to keep up but it was just the start until I had no Choice but to let my 30 employees go and close down the operation then on a personal note I was going through colon cancer and a divorce. It was a very rough period in my life the Constant thought of being a complete failure and will be with you for some time. But the best teacher is failure and after a while you’ll start to mentally feel better and move on with your life. I started another fab shop in 2010 this time a little differently instead of high priced journeyman I started used the rapid growing high tech Machines that were just coming on and using people more of a strictly labor force and started selling to the auto manufacturing companies. I ended up selling the company and retiring 1 1/2 yr ago and living my best life. As long as you still keep the hustle and determination alive in you Alex you’ll be okay. Good luck son

I have met so manyyy Americans that have sold or shut down their businesses since obidumb took control with their satanists agendas. Folks are just getting out asap it appears n retiring with less n much sooner than they expected. We are systematically being destroyed financially, Spiritually n as Constitutional Republic. Divorce is worse than sicknesses, yet I don't have colon cancer. But have 500k in spinal injuries n 24/7/365 pain being all I could be with a IED. Pray you enjoy your retirement to its fullest n retirement that ALL WOMEN are the same when good times end. I was married for 25yrs to a sweetheart from heaven. But once I had problems, she was gone n I was wayyy too nice. I'm retired also, but by force n noone will hire you with a bad spine n TBI even though I am ok most days head wise. lol. I never thought about how many things are entirely out of your control in this industry. Trucks and trailers jumped 50% in cost, fuel doubled, and insurance doubled in the span of 1 year, while rates stayed the same or even dropped slightly. That’s just a lot to overcome all at once.

Honestly this business hotshot trucking is definitely not everything that it’s cracked up to be and it’s definitely not a get rich quick type of business like most people that are either getting into this business and sone who already are in the business actually thought because they see people on KZbin and social media bragging about how much money they’re making every month and honestly that’s when the hotshot truckers with common sense and are for the most, pretty intelligent people who really truly did their research before even stepping foot in this business and truly have a genuine plan with being in the hotshot trucking world will last for years to come even through these horrific times we are living and experiencing right now. there are too many kids I see out there that have no clue what they’re doing at all from driving to compliance to having the proper equipment in their tool box when picking up a load from a shipper I’ve seen some ridiculous things out there but Alex is a true inspiration he actually had the balls to take it to the level he did and it just didn’t work only because of the problems we are facing in our country theses days I’m truly sorry I feel bad but Alex u will be great at any business you get involved in brotha stay up

I've enjoyed the ride and appreciate being allowed to tag along. I went broke twice before I finally started my plumbing company and found something that worked for me. I've been through a few recessions along the way but the one in 1986 cost me dearly and drove me out of the oilfield. Welding was always my first love and I still have the skills but the oilfield was too volatile for me after shutting down and taking everybody I know and love down with it. The plumbing business was even more lucrative and much safer, financially. I'll retire at the end of this year at age 69 and am still healthy enough to enjoy it. You'll find something that works. There is no shame in failure, not once you can man up and admit it. With your work ethic, there's no doubt that you'll be a millionaire long before you retire. And only a fool will be unwilling to hitch their wagon to yours. I look forward to your next venture. Good luck!

I've been in trucking for 44 years now and never has it occurred to me to expand because I always remembered the advice given to me by an old timer many years ago. You can control to an extent the performance of one truck when you are the driver ( one truck one headache multiple trucks means a lot of headaches and sleepless nights) stress will kill you.

As a business owner in this industry, this post hit so close to home with me. Just had to let two of my trucks go and layoff two drivers. The one thing that scares me so much about this business is being so reliant on others and not being able to set your own prices, like you said. I've called and emailed so many places looking for direct freight and still have had no luck. Thankfully the broker we run loads for will be able to keep my other two trucks running every day. But our situations are so similar. I'm 32, this is my first business, this is my first recession. In 08 when it hit, I was a freshman in college that waited tables so it didn't effect me at all really. Praying for you brother that you keep your head up and keep persevering. I thought I was a failure too, but having a good support system behind you really helps with those feelings. Wishing all the best for you buddy!

I've always enjoyed your videos and perspective, and this is a real bummer for you - but I completely get it Alex. I'm a commercial fisherman in Alaska, and we have many of the same issues. The main ones I deal with in my business are a lack of reliable manpower to work the deck, not being in control of our costs (fuel a huge hit this year), and having to take what prices are being offered at the dock, no no real control there. The cost to buy in to our industry is huge - my 50 year old, 47' long steel boat would be about $350-$400K on the market right now, and I burn through $25-$40k a year just keeping it maintained. Then there is the amount of money I have sunk into limited-entry permits is eye popping - as it sits I have roughly $150k worth of paper in my folder that allows me to go fishing. That isn't an annual expense, but part of the buy-in to do it, since we have to buy our limited-entry permits from other fishermen getting out of the business or retiring. One of the only ways I can stay in the business is belonging to my insurance pools. Open market insurance for old boats like mine is getting almost impossible to find, and our industry's economics doesn't support the building of new vessels. For commercial trolling, the average age of the boats in the fleet is getting up to 75 years old, and a majority of them are wooden vessels. Insurance companies don't like that at all... so there are a few insurance pools that I've bought into. The basically require 5 people already in the pool to vouch for you to join, which helps keep the high-risk people and poorly maintained boats out of the pools. For "hull and machinery", which is basically full coverage less liability, I paid 20% of the total value of my boat into the pool over 5 years to be vested, so roughly $15K a year for 5 years. For liability, I paid about $12k a year for 5 years, with my crew costing me an additional $750 per month per head. The kicker is that once I'm all paid in over those years, I'm vested. I don't have a major insurance bill unless someone in our pool sinks a boat or a crewmember gets really hurt. The interest in the capital in the pool pays for all the small claims and administration of the pool, and when I retire out I get my initial capital investment back out at the same rate I paid into it. That will come out as income when I retire, so my tax rate will be pretty low. Maybe there is a way you can crack the insurance nut for future drivers with this model? Alex, I run about 30 trucks under my MC and DOT number I charge 10% to run under me. I use progressive insurance. I don't insure the trucks that run under me I only insure the load and trailer. Which keeps my monthly insurance around $6500 I gross around $60k a month and keep my O/O moving.

As an owner operator of 1 truck pulling a dry van since 2012 running the 48 and Canada, I too pull the plug for the same reasons in 2017. I feel your pain Alex. I had to shut down my trucking bussiness over 20 years ago. I had a nice fleet and had to let go of all my drivers. Insurance was one of the reasons why I had to shut it down, Seems like all a scam if you ask me. Never put a claim in but the rates kept going up and up. It was a very sad day when I had to call all my drivers and ask them to return the trucks and give them there last pay check. Some of them had been with me for years. Keep your head up it will get better.

I have been in business for myself for the last 40 years and have had major setbacks and I can honestly say that I became a stronger and smarter leader through those experiences. Attitude and optimism are the most important things to have when down. My advice would be don’t worry about the gross sales, a 5-million-dollar gross sales in business with no net is worse then a million with a net of 20%. Gross sales mean nothing, IMHO. I learned the Hotshot shot business during the early days of Covid watching KZbin videos and started my business and MC . I’ve closed the business and sold off the equipment and survived the dark days that ensued. I’ve met a lot of friendly fellow truckers and learned more than I could ever express in words. There is a lot great truckers out there that share their knowledge all the time, and I thank them and often think about all that helped me when I’m at truck stop or rest area. You have a lot of talent and knowledge Alex and at this point it’s about pivoting utilize the positive benefits of your experience a lot of people were and still are inspired by your experience and videos. I appreciate your honesty and your viewpoint in this video, also that you still seem to be commenting on this video after 2 years. That is awesome. You basically built your entire business on rental equipment, is that right? Presumably, if you owned (outright, no payment) a truck and a trailer you could have continued on and just scaled back? I never understood the reasoning behind hotshotting, because it seems like (to me at least) you have to go through all the same hoops (insurance, HOS, logs, etc...) as you would with an HD truck, so might as well just do that. I understand the appeal of not needing a CDL, but I paid $2000 and got mine in 2 days start to finish. Not a big deal.

Thanks for the kind words. A few years back some youtube video i watched said something along the lines of "you don't have to remember what you said in your videos as long as you always say the truth." That's why honesty is the best policy. As for trucking & business. Naturally, hindsight is 20/20 and my knowledge about the industry is deeper now than before. That being said, used vs new vs leased is an old debate in trucking. The correct answer to that debate is what are the numbers and do they work for your company. It's easy to say that "my business was built on rental equipment" and owning outright is better but the reality is I had 5 company hotshot setups. To keep the numbers simple let's say that's $100,000 for each setup (70k truck, 20k trailer, 10k misc) That means I'd need to have $500,000 in cash. I do not have 500k cash, and even if i did, I think it would be unwise to spend it all on depreciating equipment. Instead of looking at something in dollars, it's better to look at it as a percentage. my rentals cost me about 20% of gross revenue. A paid off truck usually means an older truck. Even though there's no monthly payment, the cost will still be around 20% because of maintenance, towing and downtime / opportunity costs. Every new truck becomes a used truck, and they all breakdown and need maintenance. As for hotshot not making sense, i kinda have my foot in both camps. On one hand non cdl regs are confusing and state dependent, it's harder to find freight and equipment longevity is a concern. On the other hand semi trucks are going for $2/mile just like hotshots now a days, which one do you think is cheaper to run? which one can you do your own maintenance on? which one do you think is easier to finance? This is why hotshot will never cease to exist. It is a tough freight market right now and hopefully that improves for everyones sake.

Been hot shotting for a year now after getting my bachelors business degree. After that year, I have discovered that yes this is not ideal for a large business scale. It’s rough explaining, like you said, not having control of some of your rates, my insurance went up 700$ for my one truck and trailer with no accidents and minor inspection hits, and fuel is just down right horrendous and this is just one truck. I can’t imagine the numbers at 17. I have been staying local as much as possible to save on fuel, and be home and that seems to be the best even if I don’t gross as much

I agree. Your one truck is manageable but it's still fucking difficult. He had 17. He had way too many expenses. Be careful with how you spend your money. I've made quite a few mistakes myself so now I'm cleaning up the mess i made to stay afloat

Why not maneuver to oil field? That step deck can make crazy money. It’s easier to get on direct and as well the margins are there too. The drive and as well as consistency you have will definitely align with what it takes to make it in the patch

Thanks for the vid and transparency. I’m doing likewise. It’s ideal to cut loses then prolong the inevitable. I agree, it depends on what the Owner’s financial objective is. I prefer to be in control of what I charge otherwise it’s almost like being a Contractor in my opinion. Things won’t go on too much longer w/o government cracking down on the transportation industry and that won’t happen unless owners/truckers ban together to oppose the injustice.

It’s sounding like trying to scale trucking at the SPOT market is not easily scalable to the $5-10 M level, but perhaps a slow and steady pace in the DIRECT market might be possible. You are saying I believe that around 70% of your business was through brokers, so that seems to be key. As for the insurance, it would be interesting to dig in a bit deeper into the reasons behind the increase, but I wonder if a slower growth rate of the top line would have made any difference. You said you were renewing 17 trucks I think, but how many did you start with this year? If it was a much smaller number, then maybe the increase in the business played a role. I am a total newbie to trucking, but I do have a business degree and I am listening to others in the field say that loadboards are best used for back hauls. There is no getting around growing customers organically and selling them on your service so that you can get the rate you need and even go to them for fuel surcharges. Just my $.02. By the way, you channel was the very first one I checked out when I became interested in trucking and I really appreciated your passion and willingness to share. None of this was your failure. We are experiencing an unprecedented geopolitical and economic situation with ripples from the pandemic still clearing. I’m amazed at your thoughtfulness, work ethic and unrelenting positive attitude every time I watch your videos. I’m 37 and I haven’t accomplished half of what you’ve done. You will succeed over and again at anything. My dad ran a successful consulting business and always told me that the people you see that are the most successful have not reached there easily. This is the struggle that will be the foundation on which your greater success will stand. Don’t question your decisions, you made the right ones. Alex, you're on the cutting edge... not a good one mind you. It's the smaller operations that fall first. Though 17 trucks in this amount of time was darn good. The point is the world economy is in deep do-do. Well on its way to total collapse. When the trucks stop rolling the violence gets out of control in a hurry. Your company is one of the early ones and by far not the only one. It's an unsustainable world. I don't know where the world will be in 20 years, only that at age 71 now, likely I won't be here. I understand where you are coming from. I closed up my auto transport after the insurance went up 162%, even though I had no accidents, no failed inspections, no tickets, no OOS and maintained a very good CVS score. I miss being on the road and the travel, but I can see trucking is only going to get worse as time goes on. With all of the senior drivers leaving due to the continuous rule changes and the influx of new drivers that have no experience and so little training, the rule changes are only going to get worse. Most senior drivers are leaving cause one they are up in years. I myself been driving before cdls came out and we are a dying breed. Yes the truck industry not the same. But the stories that were told for decades makes most kids not wanna truck because of the price and pay versus time invested..

Once you get into fleet management or the level of operations you’re running, hiring a financial analyst is very crucial to maintaining the seasonality of any business. Cash flow management, access to credit, etc. A financial analyst with experience in trucking could at least guide you on financial operations

Really sad to watch this video. You have accomplished a lot for being 29 years old. Your company didn’t fail because of bad management, I was about to open a food trailer and had to shut down before I opened because of gas prices running the generator. I have been watching your videos for 2 years now. You inspired me to go get my CDL, hazmat and tanker endorsement. You have been very motivating and inspiring. Turn that chewing glass into chewing gum. Get back on the saddle when time permits. I still think, you are successful. Shutting down wasn’t part of it but better things can come from this. Fuel and insurance are terrible. Like I said, you have accomplished a lot at your age, use that experience and don’t give up! Take care!

Alex I can say from my experience maybe you expanded maybe just a little too quickly but, that being said I admire you for being brave enough to go for it. I also once ran my own business. And it was doing ok for awhile until unforeseen seen and frankly unprecedented things beyond my control forced me to close. And what we are currently witnessing is nothing short of unprecedented if not unforeseen. So stay strong retreat and regroup. The way you ended the video, talking about the scalability and lack of control in trucking; I feel the same exact way. I owned my own truck for 5 years, and you're absolutely correct. Truck ownership left me bitter with the industry. Ultimately it's a gamble. Some people get lucky, and others don't. In the world of business, you cannot rely on luck, but essentially that's how trucking works. You're playing with fire, you have limited control, and everyone is in your pockets trying to get their share. This might be a failure of a trucking business, but it's a door opening to new possibilities. Focus on a career/business path that will give you full control of your revenue. A business that isn't choked out by regulation and greed. Best of luck man.

This hits home and it hurts to watch this. I agree 100!. Im running two semis and 53' dryvans under my own authority in SC. Clean driving records and older equipment both trucks are 94 freightliners and we're at 45K a year with progressive. For the past 6 months with fuel rising and rates dropping we've been in the red every week for some time. Good luck Alex. You inspired lots of us and it pains me because we're almost at this point.

I've been in business providing concrete ballast block to commercial solar installers in 17 states, and so have used a ton of independent, regional & large national trucking outfits over the past decade. Honestly, I don't know how most truckers stay in business, and I've been saying that BEFORE we got hit with ridiculous gas prices and a whacked economy. I wish you all the best, as others have said you've got passion and honesty, you'll rebound one way or another. I've had to learn many of the valuable lessons in business the hard way, there's always some of that for all business owners. My best to you - It's much tougher for ALL business owners in general now than it was say, 10 years ago or more... Way too much regulation, taxes, in many cases unfair competition from the bigs, etc. Be well...

This is why you focus on calling shippers direct and creating dedicated routes. This has been our focus so you control your rate. Lock it in. Screw brokers. Direct relationships is where it’s at. Get those relationships and grow accordingly. Start your own broker company as well and be the broker as well. That’s the only way to make a profit for real
