I don’t know who Donny is to you but I can’t say that I liked him at all, he lacked the ability to see the angles & predict what the Ford truck was going to do, his only good call throughout that stage of the recovery was about the Ford truck being caught on the guard rail. His pulling angle was all wrong & he was mostly dismissive of any ideas other than his own. The last major annoyance of this particular job was the guy in red, getting under your feet & trying to tell you how to do the job ! Still it all got sorted out, great assistance & advice from you Dustin, you are the kind of people I enjoy working with.

@@Towtruck_Dustin It would suck for the vehicle he slid into, but as for damages, he would have been better off keeping it straight and sliding straight into another vehicle. You can tell by the way his rig and trailer landed that he wasn't going very fast when it rolled over, so If he had just locked the brakes and kept it straight I don't think he would have hit another vehicle that hard. Maybe 20 to 25mph. and doing that just the RAM would have been damaged. Well, and the vehicle he would have hit, But when it comes to spit-second actions, most of the time the body reacts and tries to turn and avoid hitting anyone else. Just glad nobody was hurt, that's what matters most.

Well done, I was happy to see you take charge & reroute the snatch block to the pass. side & shorten the snatchblock chain.. I was literally talking to my computer screen saying What are you doing? when he rigged with the snatch on the close drivers side & left the chain long.. that was bad enough.. then he raised the boom & literally put the pull point right back where it was when straight off the boom sheave...chain it short & pull low.... BTW... when ya get one that slides & doesn't wanna grab to roll... sometimes a simple floor mat under a tire will give enough to grab until the rubber sidewall catches.. but if the roads are icy & there's nothing to bite... take a chain and zigzag it in front of the tires on the pavement... when you apply even a little pull, it makes the tire sidewall bite into the chain links & starts to transfer slide into downward grip until the tire grabs.... simple but effective. Another trick to control the pull angle...since you had one winch line fail during this...down to a single line pull... if you have a chain bridle rigged up on the vehicle to a single winch point.... if you need to keep the winch hook in a certain place instead of "skipping" to the side of the chain bridle as ya pull.... take the grab hook from a chain & hook it into the bridle you're hooked to... then the winch can't pull past the grab hook & allows the pull to stay where you want it...allows you to steer/direct your pull... all with single line

Not really the heavy of a pull, Pickup probably weighs 7-8k, trailer maybe 4 or 5 let's say somewhere between 10-15k for both together, Flipping it requires you to pull half of its weight so 5-8k pull. Wrecker probably weighs around 15 by itself so with the brakes locked it can pull 10k easily without sliding, winches will do probably 16-18k together with single lines.

2nd issue that no one addresses with these wedge haulers. A lot of them use the factory Ram 5th wheel plate thinking its sturdier than a gooseneckball. Its a dual pivoting 5th wheel plate specifically designed for hauling RV's. It allows just as much movement as a gooseneck ball.
@shauncollins2017 Жыл бұрын
@George Thank You for pointing out the #1 issue. I figured it was obvious by the way the truck was loaded on the trailer that this driver was a rookie and had no clue what he was doing. And clearly you've never seen or used a factory Ram 5th wheel plate either. But you're right, I have no clue what I'm talking about.
@Acutecareems Жыл бұрын
The roll over occurred because he put the F250 too high on the trailer. It was a 4 wheel drive, lifted I think, and he put it over the bed of the Ram. He should have put the F250 low on the trailer. That was too much weight, too high in the air and on a gooseneck ball that pivots. Recipe for a roll over. When he made a turn, the F250 took the entire rig over.

That has nothing to do with balance having a truck that big at top of the trailer by its self is extremely Top heavy so the issue here is "Mr Nubby Transporter" being lazy and not un tieing truck and moving it down after unloading the other 1 or 2 vehicles that he probably had on with that Super Duty.
@Towtruck_Dustin Жыл бұрын
As previously said, the transport driver was either lazy, or possibly inexperienced and had the trailer loaded incorrectly. That heavy diesel truck should have been loaded down closer to the axle, not on top of the trailer over the 5th wheel, making the whole package extremely too heavy, which caused the whole thing to tip going around the curve.

Those small wreckers are a pain in the ass with no outriggers to have low pulls, It may not be recommended by all but my recommendation would be to get a 4 or 6 foot strap and wrap it around the boom of the wheel lift and plant the wheel lift on the ground then hook a snatch block to that strap and you'll have a much lower pull.
@Towtruck_Dustin Жыл бұрын
It’s against manufacturer recommendations to set the wheel lift down while winching, as the booms are made to flex. Stopping it from moving can cause the boom to snap.
@towtruckaj Жыл бұрын
@@Towtruck_Dustin agreed, however you don’t have to completely plant the boom on the ground as if it were any outrigger just let it float a couple inches and that’ll still get a much lower pull

Position the truck correctly and would t have any issue

@@oshkosh850. Except you would because they are still lacking some pretty important things that actually useful wreckers have... They are glorified pickups.

Bad loading, the ford truck suppose to be close to the trailer axles, otherwise the wind will blow you from behind because the rear trailer axle is light and empty

Rollovers, I have done my fair share and still get them. A lot more now. As a fellow tower from Michigan.

Why cut the straps that were holding the transported truck? Doesn’t that make it more dangerous and more difficult?
@Towtruck_Dustin Жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite. The whole reason it rolled was because it was improperly loaded and too top heavy. If you tried to roll it with truck still on the trailer, it likely would have rolled over towards us because it was too heavy. Not to mention we only cut the one strap to free it, so it wasn’t even completely secured, which means it could have came loose, and at a minimum caused more damage if not killing someone.

@@Towtruck_Dustin i giggled at the "rolled over at us part" kinda figured and pictured if it would happen it would likely to maybe snap the cable or fling the truck towards yall

Has to be annoying when a client is all in the way of you doing your job. Truck guys tend to think they know everything about trucks.🤦🏾♂️

Top heavy probably made rollover easier all front weight of trailer resting on 2/5/16 th ball easy to lose control
