She is classically trained as opera singer. If you check her Wikipedia, she graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Royal College of Music. In one of her interview with her sister, they admitted it was harder for them to belting out their voice like Whitney Houston style. She's more at ease when she is singing in opera style, projecting through the head voice. In her first album, it is more like pop/jazzy songs. Check her pop song, Keep Being You, so poppy, so catchy. In her second album, it is more like pop/r&b songs. Check her pop song, Winter Song. In her third album and recent singles, it is more like girl went nuts on her experiments, LOL, but I mean it in a good way. It sounds weird, unpredictable, lots of minors, but it feels raw, unfiltered and emotionally fragile as well. And I like it when an artist surprises me, breaking through the barrier or the stereotype that I have about that artist. Because people are changing all the time, and it is fun to see how your favorite artists evolve over time.

I really appreciate your comment.....like the analysis of all of this...... To think that you come to ponder upon what's going on inside Isyana's mind, I think it's amazing that you see this from that angle. And to come up with the (pun-intended) term: a beautiful mind... ....Great. Love it.

I too would like to know what's going on in Isyana's mind. Your reference to Beautiful Mind is spot on, it seems that there is an anxiety that leads to creativity and innovativeness (and unfortunately insanity in John Nash case). Her Indonesian lyrics are full of metaphor just like her music videos (Il Sogno is my fav).. And completely agree on the theater reference, I didn't see Gypsy Kings' Live, but the staging reminds me a lot of Once: the Musical. However more than just the setting, she is such a storyteller. I won't be surprise if somewhere along the way she will write and produce a musical.
