Toxic relationships | She will always hate me

I said that i was going to upload "The one that got away" but i made some changes. I finished this edit first because i was more inspired to do it but i promise that "The one that got away is coming soon. And after that, i'm propably finished with my new edit, bad guy. So look out for that!
Okay before any of you comment that these couples aren't toxic, let me explain. I like all of these couples but they have their moments when it's just a toxic relationship. For an example, in extraordinary you, i think that baek kyung and dan oh's relationship is really toxic. And i know that he can't control what he says on the stage but still, he isn't treating her good in the shadow either.

And even when in character he had is reason to treat her like that. To me, his character was the most well written of the drama. I did not like the main couple. Am I the only one that agrees Baek Kyung was actually toxic? Just because he was toxic doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve better or that he wasn’t a good person. Sure he wasn’t aware of himself for some time, but even when he was, he was still aggressive. I’m glad he changed for the better, and I did feel sorry for him. But in the end, Dan Oh did deserve someone that had only ever made her happy, and that wasn’t Baek Kyung. Plus, given his mental state, I don’t think it would’ve been a good idea for him to be in a relationship.

Yes, the writer is the one who made him that way, but he still continues to be a jerk after that. Upon breaking down the character of Yoo Jung in Cheese in the Trap, you'll come to see this person who has anti-social tendencies (manipulative, deceiving, charismatic and has difficulties understanding other's emotions) who actually only wanted to feel normal and accepted. It sad to see that his struggles to relate with other people has caused a rocky relationship with Seol. It was painful to see the push and pull they had with each other.

i know it's pretty late to comment. but i agree. kim moo young did some wrong things to yoo jin kang and some other girls which i would consider toxic. but the fact that he changed for the better and learned to be a better guy. yoo jin kang introduced him to his flaws and helped him to become a better person. she helped him to care for others, to become empathic to other's pain which he did. but the last few episodes kind of disappointed me as he hurted her in a very painful way. but i guess it was how someone would act if the "know" that they are romantically in love with their long lost sibling. but still, i was disappointed. however, i like the fact that yoo jin kang never accepted him before he asked her to teach him how to be a good guy. for me, yoo jin kang is the most strongest character i have ever seen in a drama. she had so many scars, most of the people wronged her, betrayed her. but she still never hurted anyone, but tried to maintain peace. most of the main characters were toxic and emotionally unstable which was potrayed sometimes subtly and sometimes explicitly. yoo jin kang was also emotionally unstable, she lived most of her life with a burden, but she never hurted anyone. meanwhile, kim moo young went through a lot of terrible shit, but that would never change the fact that he did hurt a lot of people, and made them go through some emotional shit too. but kim moo young changed himself for her and he knew that he was a monster who manipulated people for his own selfish reasons. but he wanted to change the reality of being a monster to someone who yoo jin kang liked. but does that make him any less toxic? no. but i can tell that their relationship wasn't toxic because they healed eachother. overall, i would say that the smile has left your eyes did an excellent job to create a broken messed up manipulating jerk who felt zero empathy for himself and others. and they also did a pretty decent job to show human psychology and how messed up it can be. and they did a great job to create a romantic relationship of trust, love and healing despite all the odds and terrible things that happened to them. being in the relationship somehow taught jin kang to express her negative emotions that she surpressed for most of her life. and she also found someone whom she could share her feelings without the fear of judgement. she was the most logical yet emotional character in the show. or maybe, i am biased because i can somehow relate to her. but people never appreciate her much. it's a long comment lol. but i would like to recommend the original version which i believe shows much more insight of the messed up human mind. i relate to the original version's female lead more though. she is much more childish which make her seem very realistic to me. but the male lead is almost like a sociopath. so, be ready to hate him:')

Remember how he always tormented haru by saying he's just an extra and that dan oh is his fiance. Remember how he splashed water on dan oh near the swimming pool cause he was jealous. And all of this happened after he gained awareness in the shadow. I know that he started caring about her but he showed it in a very toxic way. It didn't matter to him that dan oh liked haru. He only changed during the last eps when he remembered what he did in the previous manhwa. I really love how he devloped. And I agree he's a great and complex character. But it still doesn't change the fact that he was a jerk to her even in the shadows. He didn't consider her feelings even after having awareness. And that was toxic asf.

What's even worse is that now when the toxic relationships of kdramas are more realized and talked about. They think they are doing good by creating strong female leads. But their definition of strong female lead is reversing the roles. For example, it's okay to be not okay. It was obvious from the get go that the show was trying to convey a toxic and manipulative relationship. They were also trying so hard to make the male lead come off as creepy and manipulative. All the dark colors surrounding him, his evil smirks etc. I'm not sure how people completely missed the point of this show, it was so realistic and fun to watch. I didn't wish to see any character development but the ending was a bit rushed, overall a good show nevertheless.

Even he’s in the shadow, he’s still a jerk. He constantly talked shit and picked up a fight with Haru (especially in front of Dan Oh) because he’s jealous, because he obsessed with the idea she supposed to be his, instead of respecting Dan Oh’s choice and making her have better impression about him. Dan Oh could be nicer to Baek Kyung but he never gave her reasons to, why should she understand the difference at all when he’s always mean to her, her friends and the boy she loves?

Having watched extraordinary you a fairly good amount of time, I'm just going to give a little bit of context here about Baekyun's character. Baekyun is a character whose life wasn't easy at all. First his mother died when he was still really young, then we learn that his father actually abuses him physically and mentally and uses him as a tool in order to obtain a good deal with Dan Oh's father (I know that Baekyun knows this but I don't consider him doing it willingly as he is most of the time threatened and hit by his insufferable, excuse of a father if he disappoints him). I'm not trying in any way to justify his actions towards Dan Oh but here's my take on his motives : 1) Like I wrote Baekyun didn't really have a say in it so I guess he was frustrated and decided to take it out on Dan Oh (which was f*cked up of him) 2)Having watched closely the scenes with his father, I feel like Baekyun was basically used as a tool by his father at a very young age. It's like his sole purpose in life was to help his father's business by pretending to love a girl he didn't (or he does I'm not really sure). 3)I think Baekyun grew to like Dan Oh which was why he was frustrated by her naive personality and started being angry at himself for using the girl he may love and at herself for allowing his father and him to manipulate her and being so oblivious. 4) Again if we watch the scenes with his father, every topic revolves around Dan Oh which makes me think that Baekyun was really deprived of love since he was young and forced into loving someone who seemed to have everything going her ways. 5)The fourth reason is why Baekyun became really toxic when he learned that Dan Oh never loved him. It's because throughout his whole life, he was raised to have only one purpose and that is marrying Dan Oh. And when he saw that he couldn't accomplish the only thing his father demanded from him ( maybe he was deep down still craving for his father's admiration), he flipped off because now he really didn't have any purpose and was probably lost and alone. With that being said I had hate to see him and Dan Oh dating at the end because even if he didn't have it easy, Dan Oh deserved way better (and her relationship with Haru was so cute 😍).Plus, the drama wouldn't have had the message it tried to convey since the beginning. On the other hand, I would have loved to see Baekyun grow a strong friendship with her (or even without her), but as a side story and we get to see his journey on overcoming his abuse and trauma while trying to defeat his good for nothing of a father. As a final thought, whatever the reasons might be behind a toxic behaviour, it's NEVER ok and we need to teach our girls and sons to not accept being mistreated, whatever the person's reasons behind it might be. It's never ok. And I think we need more of this drama where the toxic lead (despite how handsome or beautiful she/he might be), doesn't have his ways at the end. Say it louder for the people in the back! I completely agree with all your points. Baek Kyung had to go through so much, but Dan-Oh definitely made the right choice not choosing him. I feel like ppl use your first couple points as a good reason why Kyung should’ve gotten together with Dan-Oh, but that (imo) is completely wrong. His past and the writer give him motive and a somewhat understandable reason for all the toxic things he did even after he became aware of himself, but it DOES NOT make any of the things he did ok (like bruh he literally killed Dan Oh off stage???!! Just because he was so possessive of her?!!!!! I’m sorry but if anybody argues that killing her was because he loved her and didn’t want to lose her like his mom or some shit, I’ll fight them personally lmaooo). Anyway, just to make things clear, I completely agree with your comment. I totally would’ve liked to see a nice friendship with him and Dan-Oh, but overall, I was happy with his development.

i think the producers worked very well on the toxic relationship term in Extraordinary You, even more knowing that in the end she ends the drama with Ha-ru, who was someone who always treated Dan-o with respect, affection, love and kindness, unlike Gyeong who kept treating her rudely and always yelling at her everywhere, even in the shadows he made a point of scorning her, constantly using the fact that she was sick, only to make her even more destiture. And, seeing that there are still people who defend him, using the fact that his mother's death left him with his psychological shaken and his problems with his father as an excuse, makes me mad. honestly, that's the kind of person i hate the most. besides, it's a fact that Gyeong only realized his mistakes and how much he had hurt Dan-o, after having already "lost" her, thanks to Ha-ru who, fortunately, brought more happiness to her life, and i'm even happier that in the end they end up remeeting in the "next book" and staying together :) still, i'm glad at the end of the drama Gyeong has remedied his mistakes and improved as a person

YESSSS !!! This is exactly what I thought when I saw Baek Kyung. And this is why I shipped Dan Oh with Haru. Because Haru doesn't treat her like shit and theu love each other equally. I didn't really understand why people shipped Dan Oh with Baek Kyung, he was clearly being toxic. I am surprised that so many people defend Beak Kyung, his character was bad but in the shadows he was also very bad with Dan oh, it was the same in the shadows as on stage and that he has a sad past does not justify mistreating Dan oh . Something about Baek Kyung from Extraordinary You. The writers of the show knew he was toxic, unhealthy for Dan Oh, and that was the whole point. Baek Kyung is supposed to be a representation of toxic male leads who start rude but change for the better, and that's why he doesn't "get the girl". He realizes he loves her, he realizes what he has done, he confesses, says sorry, and doesn't end up with her, the end. He is a commentary on how toxic leads don't "need the girl", but psychological help. But there's so much more to him so please watch the show.
