I literally remember the first time I heard the one two punch of Prison Song and Needles. My friend Matt was playing it through his huge JVC stereo in 2003. "What the FUCK is this?!? Can I get more of it?!?" One of the most game-changing, complete metal albums ever.

True story.. I’ll hear songs and load them onto a playlist to check out later. My list is growing so fast btw 🤣. A few days ago I heard “Sugar” by SOTD for the first time. Added it right away. I remember buying this album on release, then 4 months later getting it signed. They went from barely known to well known by normies so quickly. The live show was chaotic, only time a band member has spat on me… This album, for me, is probably the best of my lifetime. It set up a lot of my musical taste for the rest of my life. I haven’t listened to it in about 10 years, but I think about it regularly.

6:00 "Chop Suey" was also originally titled just "Suicide" but the label didn't like it so they just "Chopped" the word in half "Chop - Sui". If you listen closely at the beginning you hear them say "Rolling Suicide"

So I am old fan here (34 y) and I love seen this generation engaging in the metal scenario not just for the noise but for the cause (politics, social awareness, war, etc). Coudles on that! Quick facts about soad (from someone who grew up listening to them) 1 :Lyrics: You wont find a single time any of the band members explaining about their songs. They leave it to the audience. Since music is art you dont label it 2 :Creative differences: As you said, yes that has been going on for while, and for sure prevented them for releasing new content. Serj has said that he doesnt want to tour anymore, and on his recently release book/memour he said: “ I told the guys to try a new singer, to replace me”. They tried secretly but that did not work, according to Shavo the “new guy” growling and screaming wasnt near as good as Serj. So they decided to move on as it is, and only tour and perform whenever it was ok for Serj. It all happend in 2017. Guess they stull have that agreement 3 :Serj never wanted to record the Mez/Hyp. He even claimed that he does not sound as connected on the last two album, as he was in the first three records. 4 :Recorded material: John said that they have material recorded from the 2005 era that did not fit any of the two albums. Back in 2009/2010 when the band was in Hiatus, there was a rumour flowing over the net that an album supposedly called “Apologize”, would be released (similar to what happen with STA) and the band would be back. Well, they were back on tour but the album never got released. However, this songs were recorded again in 2015 when they attempted to make new material (According to John and Serj), but due to creative differences, naming rights, the projects never got finished. 5 :In about 2010/Shavo wrotte down on his twitter, what the fans would think about a new soad vocalist and other things. He shared other posts, like enraged with the whole situation. He deleted it and then the official page of the band posted that they would be back together whenever the whole band felt like the moment was right (Probably wrotte by Serj) PS: Just watched them in SNW 2024. They still sound amazing , and energetic. All their content as a band is extra ordinary, mind blowing. As long as they trully want to record something it would be amazing, but if they are only doing this “new record” to honor the fans, or doing it while putting up with inside drama, they better leave the 5 bad boys as a legacy. For me they were always a remarkable example of putting heart and soul in what you do, regardless of what everyone thinks. Peace 🤟🏻

It's really a shame Serj and Daron were never able to truly work out their creative differences. I feel for Serj since System was his outlet for writing his poetry and political activism at the time and then suddenly Mesmerize/Hypnotize happened and he only got to write 2 songs in two full albums of music. Like it's no wonder he ran out and released a solo album a year later.

Fun facts: Shimmy is actually about the failure of public school systems. Toxicity is about Armenia. I know Wiki tries saying there were only two songs written about Armenia pre-Protect The Land, but I believe that's wrong. You can see it in so many songs. Toxicity is one of them.
