Joerg when you get to the 1000J point, can you test it against 10mm of steel, if that penetrates, your toy can do serious damage against an armored fighting vehicle. You made an anti tank weapon at home and it doesn't even need an arms license, you could kill a tank with a toy!!!
@docilecrocodile63628 жыл бұрын
toys are such a joy :D
@Jordan_C_Wilde8 жыл бұрын
You need something like an AP .50 BMG which has around 15.000-20.000 joule, to get through an armor plate of an armored vehicle... So i doubt that this test would be very interesting.
@outputcoupler78198 жыл бұрын
There's no way that could penetrate armor plate. 10mm steel plate is commonly used as a target for competition .308 rifle shooting, which is around 4,000 Joules for an average load. This might scratch the surface of the plate, but penetration just isn't happening with this little energy. This should make sense. The arrow now carries about as much energy as a handgun. Can you destroy an armored fighting vehicle with a handgun?
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
I think that it would depend a lot on what kind of armor plate we're talking about because it's not all the same. A lot of light armored vehicles only have aluminum armor which is good enough against small armors and shrapnel but little else, then there's steel plate but even that isn't single type of armor since the type of steel can vary as well as well as the hardening process.
@outputcoupler78198 жыл бұрын
No, it's not going to penetrate it. Not even a little bit. The arrow would break apart uselessly on the side, and _maybe_ leave a tiny mark where it impacted. But probably not, because armor plate is very hard, and these arrows are not.

Have you thought about using different gases to propel the arrow to see if there's a significant change in output? Density and viscosity could play a role. Also, as the gas expands and cools, the water vapor is likely undergoing a phase change. It must rob the arrow of some of its kinetic energy. I don't know if it's significant or just a fraction of a percent.
@wyattrowe83968 жыл бұрын
Don't know how he would get the gases in there at that temperature.
@GruberGSA8 жыл бұрын
Buy helium and use it either directly from the tank it comes in or connect it to the compressor.
@tom_something8 жыл бұрын
It's not a speed of sound issue. More of a fluid dynamics issue. Ok, to be fair I think the speed of sound is one of many phenomena that fall under the umbrella of "fluid dynamics". But I think one of the limiting factors in air compression is the speed with which it can be forced through a tube of a given size at a given pressure. For example, honey can't be forced through a tube as quickly as water can. The same applies to gases. Some are more "slippery" than others.
@jarlsterra8 жыл бұрын
your right, a denser gas is a better choice in my opinion. When something that is dense is compressed, in this case gas, it will have the potential for a higher psi output, or a higher force in general
@GruberGSA8 жыл бұрын
In an airgun like that the gas expands at the speed of sound of the given material, air in this case at (340.29 m/s).The speed of sound of helium is (1007m/s) which means it expands faster and thus accelerates the arrow to a higher speed.

@Slingshotchannel8 жыл бұрын
@MermaidSystem8 жыл бұрын
@Slingshotchannel8 жыл бұрын
@MermaidSystem8 жыл бұрын
(Technisches Tauchen)

@darrenjolly88818 жыл бұрын
yes please do
@ninjafruitchilled8 жыл бұрын
lol that thing will probably travel like a kilometer. I doubt he will be able to find somewhere long enough to test it. If he angles up that is, otherwise if he shoots dead horizontal then according to physics he will go about 50 or 60 meters before the shot loses too much height, assuming the 100m/s velocity is maintained for half a second or so. And lol actually I think 1km is the theoretical maximum distance for a projectile travelling at 100 m/s initial velocity, neglecting air resistance, shooting at 45 degrees. The formula should be v^2/g, so 100^2/10 = 1000m, so I think my first guess is not too bad either, though air resistance will kill it somewhat. Still the arrows have a lot of inertia, they will go far!
@darrenjolly88818 жыл бұрын
ninjafruitchilled yeah on second thought, dont do a distance test😂😂.
@anonanington33958 жыл бұрын
Ignoring air resistance and aerodynamics, we can find the distance the arrow would travel from it's speed and the height it was fired from: time = sqrt(2(height)/acceleration due to gravity) t = sqrt((2*1.8 m)/9.8 m/s^2)

I wish they could mend the fences and workntogether again. It was fun while it lasted.

You need a better shooting range, your new toy is going to destroy your shed. Would the heavy steel arrow break the 1k Joule mark? seems like the aluminum arrow speeds up a little for a few meters after being shot as pressure comes escaping out of the hollow tube.

@cherusker46888 жыл бұрын

@chrislaws47855 жыл бұрын
Joerg could arm his own military with these things and have weapons that would give even the most powerful Bolt action rifle a run for its money. When does a toy stop being a "toy"? It's kind of silly that this "toy" is as if not more powerful then some rifles, honestly I don't think the person that the arrow rips through is going to care if it was fired out of a barrel or off a barrel or if it's called a "toy" or a weapon. Regardless, this thing is freaken awesome. I love your videos Joerg, all the way from North Carolina.

It has as much energy as upscale handguns and more momentum than a high power assault rifle... but against the mighty .50 BMG, not a chance.
