Back then it was still run by the Rio Grande. Run badly by the Rio Grande. But later when Bradshaw bought it he made it amazing. Well always was amazing but he made it better Rio Grande was always trying to close it. Hatred it. But the government wouldn’t let them abandon it.

Thank You for the memories! Just watched your video for the first time! I lived in Durango from 1980 to 1984. Graduated high school there! Looking back, probably the best 4 years of my life. I loved the train! the sound of that steam whistle, the smell of burnt coal, heck, I even loved the fact that, living in Durango, at times, you had to wipe the black cinders off your car! Great times!

When I was in Durango, we rode behind 476 to Silverton and back. It was working but not as it should. The throttle was either wide open or off. Nothing in between. The engineer showed me. He tried to give it just a little throttle and the lever shot back at him like it was shot out of a cannon. He was able to do some mitigation of the throttle with the Johnson bar but that did not completely make up for it. When we arrived in Silverton, a few minutes later, 481 came in and parked beside us. It is great to see your video and remember our time there. Thank you for sharing it with us!!

I remember watching some videos of the D&S that were taken back in the 90's and watching the morning yard movements with at least 5 or 6 steam engines moving around at once assembling the days trains. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Its scenes like that is why I love the D&S so much.

Thanks!!!!! We really wanted to get back this fall but speaking of fall we have some medical issues. So as soon as I get a new hip and up and walking again, and Karyn is back to 100%. Oh heck let’s see if we can make 70%, I’d go with 50% on my hip... but I digress. We will get back to Durango. They have a loaner locomotive we haven’t seen!

This is the only railroad where they have the K-28's which are D&RGW 473, 476, and 478. I did a film with 478 in the museum in 2016 after the ride on 482. I already tell you that on the Durango & silverton video that came out in 2015 that you made. I did film with a little of the engine's D&RGW 481, 480, 482, 478, 493, one of the D&S Diesel engines, and RGS C-17 # 42. But I was wanting to film the rest which are D&RGW 498, 473, 486, 476, and the other D&S diesel locomotives.

The K-28 was the engine that usually pulled the daily San Juan. It was the sport edition as my friends like to call it. There are only three left because the US government took seven of them to Alaska during the war and found that their counter weights got stuck in the high snow and led to derailments. So after the war they were scrapped. I took the D&S photo train in 2015 and 473 pulled the train. I also took pictures of 473 last year during rail fest 2016. When I get around to modeling Chama to Cumbres someday I will definitely buy a K-28 to pull the daily San Juan.

They are using the wood pellets overnight to keep the engines warm. The wood pellets don't produce the Soot, that the coal does. Avoids soot pollution in Durango neighborhoods. (Took Roundhouse Tour in October)

Actually they don’t use wood pellets overnight. I was an engine watchman there. We used coal all night. Only time we used the pellets was to help light a cold loco. Would use a few shovels of pellets over the coals and light the fire with diesel soaked rags.

Overall an interesting video. I recommend you might want to do a little "editing" in regard to some of your comments/"facts". Probably using normal railroad nomenclature when explaining the various components of wheel sets and how they are constructed/fit together would help for a better understanding. The "other" K-28 is NOT the 472, but actually the 473. So, the 3 K-28s at Durango are the 473, 476, and the 478. Who is the "new" owner and does that mean that Allen Harper no longer owns the RR?

+ToyMan Tine 3:50 *Thanks for an interesting tidbit.* Those wood pellets must be needed to get the firebox hot enough for the bituminous to catch; I need a similar boost from a couple ounces of naphtha when lighting a couple pounds of Kingsford® Mesquite™ to fire-roast a heavy chunk of beef or pork.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 7 жыл бұрын
We just saw video of lighting 491 in Golden. They were tossing in scrap lumber. Had a good ol fire going too. Then adding in coal. I for one never under estimate "boy scout water". (gasoline) A think worth doing is worth risking life for.
@karynfelix-the-Cat
@karynfelix-the-Cat 7 жыл бұрын
I grew up around coal and wood heating systems.. which appear to work in similar fashion. Coal has to be hot enough to burn, so one can't simply set fire to it with a match. Wood.. or small chunks of wood called kindling, are used, along with something like wadded up news papers placed over and around the coal. A match is used to light the news papers, which burn easily, catching the kindling on fire. The attendee simply keeps feeding more scraps of wood into the fire, until a good blaze is established. Eventually.. the coal will begin to burn. At that point.. all that is needed is to have more coal added. Coal burns longer and hotter.. A proper "draft" is needed for the fire to burn proper.. If not.. a lot of smoke and sometimes sulphur gas which can be dangerous.. Sometimes the smoke will appear orange. Creosote can build up in the chimney, or flue.. and can catch fire easily.. I'm not a fan of using any type of fire starter to start a fire in a coal heating appliance.. simply because of the eventual build up of creosote in the chimney, which is highly flammable! A fireball going up the chimney is never a good idea! LOL! Now... I'm not sure about a steam locomotive.. But after all that restoration work... I would bet they feel the same way!! :D

In the summer of 2015, 486 blew a main rod at Elk Park, enroute to Silverton. One of the steam engines already in Silverton was dispatched to rescue that train. One that day, #473 returned from Silverton hauling her original train, and that consist that was being hauled by #486. There is a video taken from near the Rockwood Cut that displays the spectacle. You may have to visit the railroad's home page to find that video. It was shot by employees of the railroad.

When I rode the D&S in July 2007 I gave them info on the Porter 6-axle diesel from USG which would have been a good back up and work loco as it is 75 tons. It wound up on the Georgetown Loop RR where it is way over size for the use.

4:28 you are looking at a bucket elevator which hoists the sand up to the top by means of steel buckets mounted to a vertical rubber conveyor belt.

Not sure how exactly this one works. It's rebuilt, but looks like the original in many ways. Modern ones use a belt. The original used compressed air to blow the sand into the tank at the top. Small pipe, didn't need to be much, often leaked when it was in use. I see the pipe here, but again, as this is rebuilt, not sure what's up. The one at Chama is still original.

The GCP&RC would need a replacement steam loco to substitute for No. 2 (or 152). The Tweetsie No. 12 is almost an exact duplicate of No. 2. The driver diameters are one inch different. I worked there from April '79 to Oct. '83.

I don't think they use steam to power the turntable. I worked in my career as a locomotive engine and when I first worked as a fireman and our turntables were either electric or powered by compressed air provided by either the engine house power plan torte locomotive's air brake system. I'm surprised their still using babbitted wheel bearings. Babbitted wheel bearings have been outlawed for over 20 years on the mainline rail network in Canada and the United States. I visited Durango back in 1980 the last year it was owned and operated by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and was surprised as i arrived in early May to find out I couldn't buy a ticket for the round trip as they were already sold out. For the entire season. Did drive to Silverton to explore the line and really enjoyed my trip until I got woken up by the campground owner at 245 in the morning saying I had just a few minutes to pack and get to higher ground as the snowmelt was raising the Animas river faster than expected . Parked with my headlights lighting the campsite I occupied and was glad I was woken up as within 10 minutes after I was woken up and packed and drove up to higher ground my campsite was under 3 feet of water and rising. Turned out a warm front had settled in over night and started rapid snowmelt. Shame someone couldn't rebuild the railroad from Durango to Antonito, Colorado linking the old D&RG segment still running in New Mexico and Colorado. I'd pay to ride the overnight train from Chama to Silverton in an old school Pullman sleeper pulled by a K-28 K-36 or a K-37. It would be interesting because it would require 2 trains a night. One westbound and one eastbound. All those in favor of rebuilding the line and restoring overnight passenger sleeper service raise your voices.

Well... That depends.. You see, Dale and I are trying to figure out how to make a turn table to work with a 20th scale model railroad. Just trying to figure out how to do that! I fully expect to see a little "steam" from the both of us, at first attempts to make it operable! LOL! Just the way it goes.... or doesn't sometimes!! LOL! We will do a show on that, for sure!! X"D

The air motors on the turntables were, as I understand, long ago steam. Everything was steam, even the wheel lathes. The house boiler served many uses. The only babbit used is in the old equipment, the C18 and the which is on loan to CATS, and the Silverton guys use it I THINK. The ones in the film are bronze. Most of them are Timken or other roller, but the wheel truck they are rebuilding here, for some reason, is "old school". The car they are rebuilding here is spread all over the shop. VERY OLD. And I guess being kept original. The stack of wood parts in the film are off of it, but no one could tell us what it is!! We need to find the horses mouth!! Amos!! Yup, 4 trains, and always sold out!!! They added a Gorge rail bus years ago to help with people showing up, but no one wanted to ride it. Ran from Rockwood into the Canyon a few times a day. There has been talk of using 42 as a replacement for that, and that may sell. We would ride it!! But a home made rail bus for an hour?????? Boring... As for relaying the missing track........ SIGN US UP. Problem is the Durango end is all highways today. Grade is not usable. But only like 5 miles of it. The rest is all there, but several large bridges that are in total disrepair. Whe is needed is to get Bill Gates into trains. Dump 500 million on the project.
@royreynolds108

Money is not the only problem or redoing the bridges or replace the missing grade. The BIG problem is the Ute Indian tribe's reservation through which a lot of the old grade goes.

@@ToyManTelevision : I doubt that the turntable was ever operated by steam, which will condense to water the minute it is removed from the boiler. Many turntables in Canada used compressed air furnished by the air brake system on the locomotive being turned.

That was amazing guys but some corrections and questions that confused me. The k-28 that was in the roundhouse beside 476 was 473 which was running all season over the summer. Also they had stopped running 4 trains around 10 years ago because their ridership severely dropped after the 2002 forest fire. Also the D&S were trying to aquire 483 from the C&TS with a trade with 478 which has not rub since 2015 because of the 1472 rebuild and the D&S working on 476. Before my question next time you guys are in the roundhouse you should ask about touring the sleeper car they have next to the bobber caboose. They only open it up if people ask to see it. Also was there a fire recently in the roundhouse? The videos are great so keep up the good work!

David Shupe in 1989 vandals burned the original roundhouse, which had been reduced to 5 stalls or something from the original 10 stalls. They saw this as an opportunity, and built a 15 stall roundhouse in its place in an outstanding amount of time.

Not sure why 473 was down, but it's back now. They told me they have plans to "rebuild" 478 after 476 gets back up in February. BUT if they could trade for a k 36, I'm sure they would. Be cool to have a K 28 at Chama, but the 36 is a real workhorse. However, the 28 is synonymous with Durango....

There are several K-37s, two in operational or semi-operational condition. Those being 491, and 497. Others that exist are 494 (in silverton), 498, and I think that 499 is still existing somewhere (probably in a field). I would have to disagree, as far as narrow gauge locos go, I think the K-28s, the K-37s, and the K-27s look better.

There are a bunch of K 37 left in the world, but only one runs. As of now. 491 is great and at Golden. 492 is at Antonito. As is 494 and 495. 497 is at Chama. Was running on D and S for years, they traded it to CATS for a K36 482 which is one of the main locos on D and S. Not much wrong with 497, but the K37s are very hard on track. Anyway, will run again at some point. 498 is in the video. Worst of the K37s. Used for parts. 499 was traded to Canon City for the K36 that belonged to Gene Autry, #486 in 1999, also one of the 4 at Durango. The K 37s were terrible on the D and S track. The two they ran were tearing up the rails on the curves in the Gorge. Then Chama found they too had problems with them. 491 is doing fine at Golden as its just not run that much, and the few hundred yards of rail are easy to repair. BUT K 37s were just never intended to be narrow gauge locos. The K 36s are perfect on these railroads. And perfect proportions. Great looking locos. 8 surviving, 4 on each railroad. And a fifth, 483 which may run again.
@CoalChrome
@CoalChrome 7 жыл бұрын
The K-37's are very good locos, as for the reason for them being hard on track (combined with their weight), is that they aren't balanced precisly. It's the same reason that C&S crews hated the #74, it wasn't balanced right and was very thirsty for lubricant on it's valve gear. The N&W had the same problems with their J's untill the 600 came into the shop and the re-worked the weights and bearings. After that, they were record holders for miles between services.
