I disagree, the timing belt/ ohc allows the engine to rev a lot more and smoother in general. Also replacing a timing belt every 100,000kms is a lot easier then a valve adjustment every 20,000kms. The belts are extremely easy to replace

Thanks Pete, I drive a 75 series with this engine. It has done 507,000 kms and the oil stays clean between services at 10,000 km intervals. I do wonder why there are no Toyota logo's / markings on this engine, apart from the sticker on the timing belt cover.

What would you think about the non turbo version of this engine, are they just as long lived or is it a case it was built better to handle the turbo

Is a 1hd-ft basically the same other than the emission systems and electronic pump

The fte heads flow slightly better, and I believe have a slightly stronger block. Pistons are also different to suit the higher pressure fuel system, which also varies between fte models and years. Otherwise very similar and only minor differences, mainly bolt on parts, turbo, emissions, etc. Both far superior to the 1hd-t predecessor in every way.

I have a 1HD-T in a 1992 GXL Landcruiser. I've owned it for 17 years, it has 485,000 km on it. I know the 1HD-FTE is newer and more powerful, but is it longer lasting or have better fuel economy? Thanks for the video, it's always good to learn more.👍

It is both more powerful and has better economy .. also has a reputation for high kms, 800000kms un opened is not uncommon if not modified.

These motors require motor oil that has a minimum of 3000 parts per million of calcium as do the HDT's .

Sadly, Toyota didn't want to bother meeting new emission standards for them .. when they already had the VDJ in the pipeline back in 07. NB if I could afford it, I'd build an FTE into a GU, would be absolutely mint.
