This engine was without cylinder head when i started the rebuilding and 1HZ uses gears and timing belt

It uses both Jungle Man. This is fairly unique to the Toyota straight six engines. The crank has a gear that drives a large idler gear that connects to the fuel pump gear. In front of that crank gear there is another gear that drives the oil pump which is to the left as we look at the front of the engine. Cover plates are then fitted so you no longer see the gears. A belt gear is then fitted to the fuel pump shaft, ( remember there is a gear underneath it connected to the crank via the large idler gear.) From that visible belt gear, the timing belt is fitted. It makes for a very reliable engine as the timing belt has less stress. It also adds to making head changes a lot easier. Hope this helps.

1hz are excellent engines , I have one with 700,000 + km , it has been rebuilt once. Change the timing belt every 100,000 km as stated by Toyota. I live in a tropical country , many 1 kz in Hiace minibuses , cooling system not maintained , engine overheats and cracks head. Also 1kz not really designed for tropical conditions

Finding Hino engine parts in our country ist a real headache... I had bad experiences using Chinese parts on Japanese engines, maybe in Ebay you can find something OEM quality

A very robust engine. I have spent a lot of time in Africa. If I had to rely on one engine in Africa, this would be it. It takes a lot of abuse and keeps going. It's not the most powerful due to the lack of turbo but that just adds to it's reliability.

@@dimmacommunication People do fit turbo's too it because they think it is like the next gen' 1HDT, but the 1HDT has oil cooler sprayers under the pistons to cope with the turbo, the 1HZ doesn't have these. It won't get you there fast but it will always get you there!
