Toyota's 4.7 is practically bulletproof. Damn fine motor

Until your timing belt does this😅 but hey, after seeing this everyone will pay very close attention. Plus it adds to the bulletproofing because you actually change out your water pump and pulleys on a regular basis (100k being “regular” for the 500k+ its capable of lol)

For those who are interested. This Landcruiser ran (poorly) with no check engine light, pre ignition or detination. The timing belt was off by a mile yet once I got it all lined up it ran like it had 5 more cylinders with no internal engine damage. That was one happy customer!

@@TitusEGRHS Once it's all apart like that just remove the two 12mm bolts holding the hydraulic tensioner so that you can remove the belt and then turn the crank 30 degrees until the mark lines up, then put the belt back on. You'll have to put the hydraulic tensioner in a vise to push back the piston and then secure it by putting in a small pin (a small hex wrench works well) in the tiny hole to hold the piston in before reinstalling. Once you've double checked the belt in back on and all the marks line up on both cams AND the crank then you can remove the pin. Then you can start putting everything you had to pull off in the first place back on, the timing covers, the fan bracket, alternator, steering pump, serpentine belt, fan, etc.

😮 😮 Amazed I’m blown away. How many came in the shop with rods bent and pieces in the pan. You gotta love Toyota and is why I have one. Highlander 💪🏾

Pretty sure this is what happened to my truck and is currently still out of time. It makes a chirping noise and light lifter noise. A master tech was doing it and i questioned it while watching him and was told i was wrong. It's been like this over a year now and still runs and drives fine but do feel like it lost some power and has a very light vibration at lower rpm almost like drivelines out of balance but it's not. He lined it up with the T mark instead of the thick line. and it all lined up on the crank, but as soon as you change it over to the other mark like you did I'm betting it is also out 30 Degrease.

I would have rolled to engine till the damper showed 0 TDC. After doing this I would check to see if the cam marks had been lined up to the T mark instead of the notch? Also it must be a cheap belt not not installed according to marks. All the belts I have installed on this engine have a left cam arrow and a right cam arrow and a crank arrow. It is possible to install the belt with out marks on it but it makes it much easier to make sure nothing has moved and once you release the tensioner and pull it through a couple times you know if it is right. Just did my Sequoia last week.

A paint marker is your best friend when doing a timing belt job. A white fine tip marker.

i would pay attention to the crank mark, to be a TDC and then look at the cam marks if not lined up make one more rotation with the crank TDC and cams at their marks, if still off rotate crank until piston is at TDC with crank also at TDC, now make sure your cams are at the proper marks

That is not right At the cranck shaft there is a point on the gear you have to align the belt mark

For this motor if the timing belt install incorrectly the valve and piston will hit each other. Also you cannot start the motor.

How could this happen? This is what I am afraid before doing my. Is it because the engine not at TDC when the belt put on?

it was because the first nipple head that installed it... lined up the timing on cams on them capitol T's instead of the timing mark at 12 oclock ..seen this 20 times in 20 years

How do you adjust it if the timing marks are off? Just take the belt off and line it back up?

Slowly for the valves can still hit the pistons. Any slight bind will cause damage. Removing the spark plugs will keep the engine from making compression and thus make it easier to identify binding between the pistons and valves.

Seattle808 After properly lining everything up it ran like it has 5 more cylinders than before. No engine damage.

@@georgesand4629 I very slowly spun the crank and cams till everything was lined up being very cautious of any interference and it worked.

Wow thats scary knowing these are interference motors. Did the customer do it himself or someone else? I find it hard to believe that it just jumped timing. Was the hydraulic tensioner leaking

Another shop replaced the timing belt and it ran like this for 3 years. So weird! They just put it together wrong. No slop in the belt or tensioner issues.

05&06 are interference. 2000-2004 are non vvti and not interference

I just worked on it again 4 days ago. Currently has 278,000 miles on it. Never had an engine.

Those marks will never line up again after initial start after replacement. How did you make your determination!?

The marks on the belt won't line up for a around 1200 be revolutions but the physical marks on the engine line u ok every 2 I'm turns of the Crank shaft

That looks correct to me. Double check the manual. That's why that dowel is there on the block.

hellsbay if it's off on the cover it's off. Dowl doesn't matter. Always line it with the cover and crank. Spin it a few times to make sure it's good.
