Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as we have a look at this 2000 Toyota 4runner 3.4 4x4 that came in with the service engine soon light on and a P0136 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 2 stored in the memory. We take a minute to run some quick tests to verify the problem and run a drive cycle after the repair is made to confirm the fix. -Enjoy!!

Little tip with the magnet fishing, cut the top off a plastic soda bottle and feed the rope through it so the wider part of the bottle top covers the magnet. That'll help keep the magnet from getting snagged while dragging it back in. Merry Christmas to you, the lovely Mrs. O, and the entire family.

Very good video I just did the bank 2 sencer 1 heater circuit malfunction it stopped work on my 1998 Toyota Camry V6 3.0,, same thing happened to me I ordered one and had the right server box but when I opened it up it was the wrong one, I mean im no Mechanic but I had enough experience to catch that you know. So I went to the parts store and bought the right one and put it in and works pretty good job well done. But very good video as all the videos I seen that you put out my friend

Great quick diagnosis and a Merry Christmas to you and the posse over there in Avoca! My brother in Rochester says it's going to be snowing tonight. Looks like it'll be a white Christmas for you guys and for us here in SLC.... Anyway, I just pulled a 2003 Subaru EJ25 from the wrecking yard... can't beat a good motor for only $180! It's going in a 2005 Legacy. The only difference between the two is that the 2003 doesn't have the EGR port from the left head. Online there are success stories about just drilling and tapping one - you can see that the casting already has an area dedicated for that "future" option. I just drilled and tapped it yesterday and all seems well. Going to install the engine today. Have you ever done something like that?

Nice trick with the torch! Saw you do that before on a F-150 manifold - pretty slick. I finally got myself a torch setup after wielding MAP gas for 20 years or so. Could get by with that on the old stuff, but not anymore with everything being post-'96 these days (they've improved the bodies, but it seems the undercarriage has taken 20 steps backwards). Now I've got to practice! Thankfully I've got alot of scrap metal laying around to burn up first, before I unleash "the wrench of fury" on the customer's stuff. :D Once the floor is poured in the new shop, I'll dig the thing out of my barn and actually be able to use it. I've learned alot about modern electronics from you and Paul Danner (ScannerDanner), but I seem to forget everything the minute I go out into the shop! Sucks getting old, lol. I'm pretty new to OBD-II stuff - I used to refuse it all, until I learned how to troubleshoot the things, just in the past year. I stuck with carbureted stuff (rare these days in cars, but plenty of it in lawn equipment) for the most part. Now I need some more hands-on with the new stuff, so all this new knowledge will sink in. Too many brakes, front ends, and tires around here lately! :D Thanks for another great one. Time for me to finally go to bed! Merry Christmas to you Eric, and Vanessa, and the rest of the family. :)

chinesium metals at their finest, I'm still stuck with MAPP gas, the tiny oxy/acetylene torch I have is a joke ( the small store bought bottles) I do have an ancient set of gauges, hard as rock hoses and dinosaur torch set that is no longer made :( last used about 1993?
@SmittySmithsonite
@SmittySmithsonite 6 жыл бұрын
I hear that - chinesium, the 119th element. Creeping into EVERYTHING these days. Sounds like the 50 year old acetylene brazing torch I had handed down from my grandfather. My dad and I attempted to use it one day, and nearly had a catastrophe when the torch handle burst into flames. There were leaks from the valve, all the way down the hose to the torch itself, lol. I brought it home with me, and couldn't find anything that would fit it. My neighbor brought the tank to the gas company to get refilled, and I guess it caused quite a stir, since nobody had seen that style tank and valve in decades. :D

Like the idea of the vice grips on the test light. You might be interested in my own version? I got a small G clamp,a two inch one and drilled a hole to bolt wire to it. I removed the little cap from the screw and sharpened to a point the little ball end on the thread. Now can clamp to any surface,just tighten screw to get a good earth. Even works on painted surfaces as well as rusty ones. Little spot of rust preventer after removed. Locks on solid,gives a great earth every time,with no prep or cleaning and is low profile. If I works for me it can work for you!

It seems an oxygen sensor or a t-belt is just about the only kind of job a mechanic can hope to see on one of these 3.4L 'yota truck motors! Love my '96 4Runner, I use it for all my travel and road trips and some mild offroading, aside from a failed fuel injector a few years ago its never missed a beat. Not bad for a 21 year old truck. Seems like the only thing that can really take them off the road is frame rust. The bodies hold up incredibly well, but the boxed frames will rust inside out if you don't undercoat in a northern climate.

Strawberry milkshake takes out the automatics because of antifreeze mixing with atf. Also rear axle seals go often! And if you don't check diff fluid often (who does?) He rear diff implodes. These are alot better than the previous generation with the 3.0 head gasket circus!
@gtemnykh
@gtemnykh 6 жыл бұрын
The "milkshake" issue definitely exists, but I think its rate of incidence gets overblown on the internet. Having said that, I have an external trans cooler on mine to bypass the built-in trans cooler in the radiator. The rear diff thing, okay for someone completely negligent and oblivious I suppose that is possible. Mine had a bad axle seal when I bought it, the oil spray around the rear inner fender and grease smell kind of gave it away. It didn't take "checking the diff fluid often" to catch and correct that issue. Compared to my friend's '00 XJ Cherokee with rusted rockers and a cracked head/blown head gasket by 110k miles, the 4Runner is a spring chicken. A lot of that does come down to how the owner maintains their vehicle be it Toyota or Mopor or Ford etc. But I find that the overall quality and dependability of these older Toyotas to be simply incredible (better than the new ones, in terms of things like paint quality and interior parts).

Most of the work I see on these is suspension problems. Lower ball-joint separation can ruin your day. Mostly long neglected maintenance.
@gtemnykh
@gtemnykh 6 жыл бұрын
Spot on James. All of these older Toyota trucks/suvs with double wishbone front ends had an inverted/in-tension style of lower balljoint that would not really give anywhere as much notice of impending failure before they let go. The other problem is people using poor quality balljoints when they do replace them. I preemptively replaced mine with OEM Toyota pieces at 135k miles, the stock 20 year old balljoints were still perfectly tight but I was spooked. 95-04 Tacomas, 96-02 4Runners, 01-07 Sequoias, '99-06 Tundras are all potentially at risk. Newer Toyota 4wd IFS has a more traditional balljoint orientation. I do know several friends with this generation 4Runner that have 150k+ miles on the OE lower balljoints and they seem to still be tight.

Just like Jarred food, medicine, bottled food- nearly everything has some type of "tamper resistant" packaging- but not auto part boxes. OTOH It takes 5 seconds to verify numbers of box & bag to match, and if bag is open, BEFORE granting a refund or replacement, and BEFORE returning it to stock. I know that OEM parts usually have a bag label that reads: NOT RETURNABLE IF OPENED, and Dealers Parts Depts usually examine stuff like that. They are showing very slipshod business practices. I would call a Customer Rep, get this situation remedied ASAP. This happens way too often.

Usually, the basic criteria for the O2 heaters depends on ECT vs engine run time. In other words, if 1 does a hot restart, the heater is not needed, therefore not used/run. Depending on the manufacturer, this could mean 20-40* cool off, and sometimes, the PCM just will briefly switch the heater on, then off, to check circuit integrity, but not actually use the heater function at all, again, depending on the programing. I've run into that alot on older OBD2 Asian cars, as well as Fords, when trying to run a drive cycle. Sometimes, you just gotta wait. Nice trick with the rusted nuts/studs BTW..

Eric, at Toyota on these we use Techsteam to monitor O2 sensor data and it gives us real time input on impedance of the circuit and current to the heater, going from memory here (don't quote me!) cold impedance is like 21K ohms and decreases as it heats up so the ECU knows approximate temperature. So, if it does not see any impedance (unplugged) it sets that code. I didn't see those parameters on your scan tool?
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 6 жыл бұрын
You know, our after market scan tools usually show O2 and AFR heater resistance or impedance but on this one it did not. Maybe a year cut off before it is displayed. I have Techstream Lite but did not use it on this one however I am familiar with those PIDS.

O. I still see that age Toyota all the time here. If you install the test light (turn signal bulb), on the heater circuit, clear the codes, and start the car, the light will come on within 30 seconds or so. Also, you missed a chance to use your Mastertech! It has the factory Toyota software on there for this age Toyota.

Yup, nice, practice makes perfect not to damage the threads. Another method for seriously rusted studs and bolts is to heat them up slower clear through red hot and throw cold water on them to cool FAST. The nuts cool faster on the the bolt and result is a loose nut on the rusted stud or bolt what ever the case may be and then your not potentially melting the threads. It will work on anything but with larger the bolts it's harder is is to cool faster right down to getting a water hose and doing it twice. Haven't twisted a bolt off on 20 years.

I once had a vauxhall insignia (European Gm) that I was chasing a o2 heater sensor fault on. Couldn't get heater to work ie no control side. was about to call the box. Then I found that it was turned on when you opened the drivers door .

why was the driveshaft spinning on the rack ? Seems odd, leave it in neutral maybe ? edit: Just noticed after the install ... It was a stick shift in neutral, that explains it !

I have a Tacoma with the same 3.4L engine. Ive owned it since it had 30k on it. It's got 250k now, but its always been slow to start. A long crank time, like 4 times longer than this 4Runner. Does not matter cold or hot. Could this be the fuel pump pressure regulator? How can I check?

Nice. Is that thing a stick shift too? What a vehicle. 17 years of New York crust too. Not bad. So the heater circuit needed a higher amperage test light to work by the sounds of it. Interesting. Whoever stole the gasket and put the wrong part back in that box was a right wanker! I'd have smashed something if that had happened to me.

zoidberg444 I heard ya on the 5 speed manual. Hard to find on suv's today. Even small econo cars are going the way of cvt trans, due to epa mandated higher mpg. Just got a new 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 with a 5 speed. There was only one more 5 speed forsale within 200 miles of me. Believe it or not, having a manual is safer. It forces you to stay in tune with the engine rpm. Less chance for mutli tasking around town.

I've been looking for a used manual subaru and they are fairly extinct now. I talked to someone with a 5 speed who said they had to order it to get it. You can't just walk onto car dealership lots and get them anymore. At least not without getting lucky.
