The Toyota 4Runner is the Off-Road car of the people. With a reputation for being bulletproof, it became the off-road car that defined the SUV. We cover its humble inspiration- the Toyota Trekker, the low power, but indestructible, rock dominating first and second gen 4Runners, and the Modern Luxury SUV off-road monster it is today. This is everything you need to know to get Up to Speed on the Toyota 4Runner.

@@chriscarguy I guess Toyota highlander fills that roll. Albeit it doesn't come in diesel. Anyway, i think Pajero sports 2020 is amazing for now. Now, I only want some company to make an electric SUV with a motor in each wheel, and a big diesel generator in the hood. It would probably cost way too much. But it would still be cool to know that it exists lol

LOVE my 3rd gen, SR5! Other than basic maintenance, I've added the Rough Country 3" suspension lift/level and 31" Wrangler MT/R Kevlar reinforced sidewall tires. So far, I've very carelessly driven WHERE EVER THE FUCK I PLEASE, with ZERO issues. Closest I've ever came to being stuck was 21+" deep (on 31's mind you), in the middle of the softest, muddiest, cornfield---I ALMOST crawled to a stop, but just before it did, I finally shifted into "4L" & pushed the "diff lock" button for the 1st time since I bought it, started cutting the steering wheel from side to side, and inched my way back to solid ground. The 2nd greatest moment I've EVER had in a corn field. 😂🔰 edit: 2002, with 295,000+ miles

My wife owns a 1997 4Runner Limited with more than 300,000 miles on the odometer. Everything and I mean everything from the power door locks/windows/seats, moonroof, rear window, A/C, heater, power antenna etc all work and are original. Powertrain is all original as well. We live in the rust belt and the under body is better than cars I've seen that were 5 years old. Believe it or not she can pay cash for a loaded 2018 LX 570 but she won't even consider an upgrade because her 4Runner keeps on chugging along. True story

My dad had a 3rd gen Hilux Surf, and when he bought it, 2 of his brothers got ones as well. Went through some crazy climbs with them together too, my dad even put an 18-inch sub in the back. ONLY gripe with them is that they can roll over pretty easily because they have a high center of gravity. Also with that tailgate, you could get an option with a spare wheel on the back that you'd open to the side and you could still flip down the back, there's another trim level that came with a sunroof too. They even had a little light on the dash that would tell you when the turbo started to spool :) I miss ours, when it was imported there were two jet skis above it, so the roof wasn't perfect :/ found some Japanese money in it though :) We occasionally saw the new owner, he loved the thing to death.

Drift Rai Getting knowledge on driving from Initial D is about as effective as getting knowledge on physics from Wile E. Coyote. I like Japanese cars, it's my favourite of all markets. But just because I like them doesn't mean I'd need to watch it so I can jizz over a fucking hatchi roku. Some of these initial D fanboys are beyond ridiculous. They'll say shit like, "Oh yeah it's called [Japanese name] (English translation) it's a very popular technique." Like why the fuck do you even need to bother? You wrote the entire sentence in English, bar one Japanese word, but you wrote the English translation anyway. Are you just trying to cater to Japanese speakers? Nope, because all they'll see "jibberish, jibberish, familiar word, more jibberish". You're not catering to them, you're just trying to show off to everyone else. "Look at me everyone, I know the Japanese word for it, I am sooooo smart!!!" Initial D fanboys are awful. If you wanna watch it, watch it, but don't fucking parade around like it's your adopted culture.

I've had a 88, 91 and 92. They're badass. I can see why someone who never experienced the toughness, reliability, capability of the 1st or 2nd gen Toyota 4x4s and the 20/22R would see it as just another suv. Old Toyota 4x4s hold their value extremely well and people swear by them. They're the shiznit.

I bought a 3rd gen 4x4 SR5 new off the lot in '96, still driving it 250k+ miles later.. I'll probably be driving it until I'm too old to drive any more. I did have to replace basically every moving part under the front end, rack and pinion, ball joints, rod ends etc. at a bit over 200k which is the first real repair I've had to do to it. Planning on a paint job, new carpet and interior in the next few years.
