Toyota 4Runner Misfire Diagnosis Using a Test Light DIY

While my engine block and cylinder head are at the machine shop being rebuilt, my sister's 4Runner showed up with what was told to me would be a clutch job but turned out to be a simple misfire situation. Here's how to diagnose something like this, featuring some nice test light diagnosis work that I picked up from ScannerDanner.

That 4runner will not let you down. Take care of it with clean fluids and it'll go 500k or more miles no problem, especially that 22RE, it's the most reliable motor Toyota has ever made.

Total replacement of HT components is the way to go. Great fix and next time when he says he needs sparkplugs go buy the clutch replacement kit !

I have a 2003 DODGE CARAVAN SE V6 3.3L The minivan is giving me a P0300 code. I turned on the engine and left it idling. Connected a test light to a ground and connected a vacuum gauge to a vacuum port on the upper intake manifold. I did a cylinder drop test using the test light while removing one wire at a time from the coil pack and observing the vacuum gauge needle for movement. As i was removing one wire at a time from the coil pack using the test light the vacuum gauge needle was not moving so i can know which exact cylinder is misfiring. Do you happen to know why the vacuum gauge needle was not moving?

Vehicle manufacturer's don't recommend coating anti-seize on threads. The plugs have anti-corosion plating anyway.

If your sister still has this 4Runner, it'd be worth looking her VIN # up on Toyota's recall web page to see if it ever had the steering drag link replaced. I just found out about the recall even though I've owned my '94 pickup 4x4 for 4 years, and the database shows mine never had the recall service performed. The dealership installs an updated design drag link for free and you get a free alignment out of it, plus you don't die from the old drag link fracturing in two on the interstate (which has happened to multiple people).
