Thanks for this - another great video! My radiator has been getting more and more light brown (I believe it is the original on my '98), so I think it was time. Just did this last weekend. The spill-free funnel kit is awesome; however, I guess I didn't have it sealed 100%, and the coolant start leaking out of the fill cap (after the initial 2 gallons) and running down the back of the new radiator while I was burping the system. I almost had a mess-free job this time...but alas! Random, but my compliments on your KZbin thumbnails (background). It's always a nice, unique touch and catches the eye when scrolling through a topic looking for that next project, and those of us that know and love your content recognize it right away.

Fan Shroud: after taking off those clips, go underneath and pull out the bottom part, let’s call it the sub-shroud. That makes it so you can just leave the “main” shroud attached and lift it out with the rad, and swap it onto the new rad on your bench easy-peasy. Just did mine last night. 👍 Also, this is a good time for a Coolant Flush and/or new Thermostat. In my case, since I just recently rescued this 4Runner and wasn’t sure what coolant types had been in it previous or why the top of the radiator cracked, I did a complete Coolant Flush and replaced Thermostat (and verified the Fan Clutch was good).

Subtegral they might be right. I don’t know enough to know everything I don’t know. The forums tend to support flushes tho, so a little extra effort for my babies is AOK. Likewise with the debate about only using official red coolant, for me it’s a choice to be ok with the extra $10 every couple years until there’s a generic with the same formulation or science explaining why it’s unnecessary. Likewise again with the community advice to not mix coolant types, especially when you don’t know what a previous owner might have let happen. Your mileage literally may vary. :-)

Does yours (or anyone??) have an aluminum bridge type of arrangement with a baring for the clutch fan to be attached to? Apparently the crank pulley and the idler pulley centers don't line up on the fan shroud in the middle of the radiator. So there's this aluminum piece that as far as I can tell centers the fan up and pushes the fan forward the thickness of that bridge. Long story long, I hit a deer. Dad trailers my 2nd gen to his place and before I get down to his place he decides to remove everything from the bumper to the block. I wasn't here, he's 83, he didn't have any parts to put back on so I have NO IDEA why he would take it all apart...and he doesn't remember a bridge thing, or where any of the other parts go either. Hopefully I can figure out the rest.. So if it wasn't there then the prev owners must have bolted the clutch fan straight to one of the 2 off center pulleys, like on a SBC. You might not even have one on a 3rd gen. I just know it's like $125 for a new one. I'm disabled almost, and he's like 83 or so, so it's the blind leading the blind and crippled....and broke. I'm going to end up with a 2x4 for a bumper. I just gotta get it together before it turns into lawn art. We're going on 2 years now. Sorry, it's long and rambling and don't even know the parts name. I barely even remember what it drives like. Thanks.
@PhoRunner4 жыл бұрын
Don’t recall that on a 3rd gen. Best advice is to head to the salvage yard and find a 2nd gen and examine it or grab parts you need. Good luck bud

Upon closer inspection of mine yesterday, I noticed it's cracked like yours was but on the inside towards the motor and also sipping at the bottom by the passenger side. By the way, why does the reservoir fluid goes dry if it's lower than the radiator, does the radiator suck the coolant back when it's losing it? Mine has the exact same symptoms.. This channel is so underrated.. such a detailed DIY!
@PhoRunner3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure. If it’s a light leak, I guess it dries up and looks like that to warn you it’s leaking. The top of the radiator seems normal to be pink and dry since my new one is like that now lol. Just keep an eye on the level to make sure it’s never low. Mine was Constantly low even after topping it off (shouldn’t have to top off) and I found that lower hose was leaking as show in the video :). Thanks for watching.

@@PhoRunner Just to follow up on this.. I was searching the forums and found out that prior to ‘01, coolant lines were not stainless steel and were prone to rotting.. might have to check for that see if that’s why my res tank is always low even though I fill it up.. I’m just baffled by why the res tank keeps getting empty though.. maybe the radiator is sucking all the coolant back up in it and it’s escaping somehow through those cooling lines which might be rotted. It’s a 21 year old car after all.. Edit.. I checked the transmission cooling lines and thankfully, they’re fine 👍🏻 Seems to be an issue only in the rust belt area..
