Hello Peter. Excellent video. I congratulate you because here it is shown that you are an excellent human being and mechanic who helps young people to learn from your area of expertise. Even more so being a student of auto mechanics.

I've rebuilt my '97 4Runner's original starter twice over the years. Luckily replacing the contacts and plunger is all it needed.
@djmarkham Жыл бұрын
I've experineced the same symptoms this past winter and it turned out to be corroded positive bettery terminal. After cleaning them thoroughly no more problems. Also, instead of replacing the whole starter, try changing the copper contacts and the plunger st, much cheaper than the starter. Great video as always!

Here's a lesson I learned with my 3RZ-FE powered 2000 Tacoma 4x4 back around 2010 ( or near abouts. ) I was driving home running about 70 mph, and the truck quit running & would not start. The engine & starter would turn over, but it wouldn't fire up. We quickly determined it wasn't getting any fuel: Spraying starting fluid into the air intake would cause it to start right up, then die immediately. ( Keep in mind, we didn't have a hand-held diagnostic device. ) Bad fuel pump, right? WRONG. I installed a new fuel pump & screen, and it still wouldn't start. I replaced the fuel filter, still wouldn't start. Replaced both EFI relay switches, still wouldn't start. This was when a friend finally turned me onto a Toyota tech, who is now my friend to this very day. He told me over the phone: "You've got a bad coil". I replied: "We put a test light to each coil, and the test light lit up". He replied: "You can't rely on a test light for those coils, because the system requires far more amps than what is needed to light up a test light". Turns out, he was correct. He explained how the ECU detected one of my coils was going bad ( my 3RZ has the twin coils, each one powers 2 cylinders in this 4 cyl engine ), and closed the circuit to the fuel pump. This is a safety feature to save your engine from catastrophic failure, because when driving, if a coil fails to spark, 2 cylinders would still be getting filled with fuel, then IF the coil ignites suddenly, you blow up your engine. I buy a new coil at a local parts store for about $75, and it literally only takes a couple minutes to replace it ( two 10mm bolts for each coil, and both coils are located at the front of the engine, very easy to access ) and it started right up. This entire ordeal lasted about 10 days & several hundred dollars gone to waste, before I met my buddy who taught me the problem. And because of that, I had thrown away a perfectly good Denso fuel pump. I could've been back on the road literally in minutes, for only $75 ( not counting a trip to the auto parts store. ) Attention ALL 1st gen Tacoma owners: buy & use ONLY Denso fuel pumps, starters, and alternators in your 1st gen Tacoma. These Denso parts will outlast any 3 ( or more ) of any other brand, trust me. All Denso starters, alternators, and fuel pumps are over-spec'd, using better quality components, even the little electric motors have heavier copper wire with more copper wire windings,. which makes them far more durable and less prone to burning up. ( I'm told that Denso starters & alternators use sealed bearings instead of cheap bushings. ) Sure, a Denso fuel pump, for example, costs about $100 more than the other replacement fuel pumps that are available, but like I said, the Denso parts are proven to outlast at least 3 of the same parts manufactured by anyone else. The Denso parts literally SAVE you money in the long run, due to the major inconvenience of being caught broken down on the side of the road, and all of the down-time for having to replace those cheaper parts that WILL NOT LAST NEARLY AS LONG.

Ah, the old ND gear reduction starters...The only thing wrong with that starter is the L-shaped solenoid contacts under the cover with the 3 philips screws. I used to fix those for about $5-10 for new contacts. Takes about 10 minutes to change them. One side burns down and the other stays pretty good. Pretty soon the plunger doesn't make contact with one side.

I had a 2000 3.4L 4Runner and the starter failed around 180k...but the contacts welded so I had to pull the battery quickly before the the starter motor burned up. $20 contact solenoid kit and all was well after a major pain of removing the starter and installing the new contacts. I had intermittent issues 2 months prior to the welded contact failure. Pulling the dipstick tube gives access to starter removal.

That $145 is the equivalent of AAA roadside assistance. Even if you don’t have their insurance. The towing is a safety net.

Which grease to use for rack and pinion for everything inside the boot? Lithium, synthetic? Anything specific, or it doesn't matter? I have Sienna 2008 with ripped boot and I don't know, which grease to use. Looks like nobody eve speficically mention it.

A basic AAA membership would have paid for itself several time over and made Isaac's 7 mile tow free. Cheap insurance, and even though it's a Toyota, with 290K miles, highly advisable to have. (No, no connection to AAA here. Just a recommendation based on experience.)
@hokie9910 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, AAA is a no brainer

Sounds like you had a little party there too with Izaak's mom. Like a going away party. You had so much fun on this video. I never heard you so happy and laughing so much other than your old days on the island. Your sigh made me sad like maybe you might not be coming back. Be careful and don't be out too late at night, never know what may go on in the world now. Came back safe friend. You are like a brother comrade Petr. You will be very missed if you do not show your face back in exactly one month. Your VW looks good too there in the background. Be careful. Have emergency supplies available to you wherever you go. The conspiracy theorist would say 50 US senators being issued satellite phones means something is going to happen. Maybe the collapse of the United States. We no longer have a country because we no longer have borders. Plus the 30 tons of ammonium nitrate. That's enough for 15 Oklahoma City's. May God protect us all. Prayers to you and your wife and family.
