This was filmed and edited on an iPhone, with a broken microphone, propped up by a sneaker. Also I have no clue how to edit. Needless to say, the quality is poor. Still hope it demonstrated the performance. I’m just waiting on more snow to shoot a better version.

I have a review of my Subaru BRZ in the snow with stock tires (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-Xdmqkpr5ga5o). For sure not a car to drive in the snow with stock tires! Having winter tires makes it ok. Not great, but, at least much safer! I did the video for fun, to test the stock setup. So, anyone with a stock vehicle would know what to expect (which was, do not drive this car in the snow with stock tires)!

Great video this give me some hope I was planning to sell my 86 and was so sad to even think about it how I love this car. I will be getting those snow tires. NYC we got some snow blizzard and I wasn't able to commute. it snowed every other day for a couple of weeks. I could not imagine living anywhere else and dealing with real snow blizzard's I would have to get a 4x4 lol.

I’m in the northeast as well and did a fair bit of driving the past couple weeks. If you’re in or around the city this should be a good setup to do the trick ✌🏽

How was the handling in the snow? Did you end up keeping the car?

Everything I've seen about this seems to be about experience with pushing the car in the right direction with the pedal and having snow tires. Is that accurate? Do you think any changes to the rear diff help in snow? I've been spoiled with AWD cars.

...where was the steep hill?
@robschaefer43054 жыл бұрын
From 1:38 until 2:10 in the video is a hill with an average grade of 10-11% according to GPS markings

Ok yes you put snow tires on and weight in the back, but you completely disabled traction control so does it do better with tc on or off
@robschaefer43053 жыл бұрын
Implicitly you're going to have some slip driving in the snow, right? So opposed to the TC pulling power away and your pedal doing nothing (which is a nerve racking sensation) I disable TC and modulate the throttle myself, allowing for some slip and oversteer but just controlling it. Sometimes the tires need to burrow down into denser layers of packed snow to get the grip and TC can cut the power before you get there. And it's not contributing anything in the first place like an intelligent AWD. Theres no electronic diff or trick braking system to correct angle or redirect torque. It just pulls power.

Go for the smallest rim size you can and the skinniest tire, deflate them by about 5 to 10 psi less than recommended and you will have all kinds of traction. I drive a 97 suburban year round in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick without ever needing to use 4wd. Blizzaks are good tires but studded tires with all the slots filled are waaaay better if you have less traction.

Two wheel drive vehicles are better in snow with the TC off unless they have a dedicated snow mode which typically only comes with AWD or 4x4.

I daily an '07 Mustang GT in Wisconsin and put 0lb weight in trunk and do just fine with TCS on rolling through 3-5" unplowed snow (was running Blizzak WS-70's have WS-90's but they never got to really see snow last year :( ), there's no need to throw sand in your trunk. I turn TCS off to have a little fun tho :D

When it comes to hills, the weight makes a big difference. I ran it back to back with and without weight. I happen to live on a mountain so its a necessity. But for flatish terrain, you're totally right go for it 👍🏽

With your current setup, do you have any problems accelerating from a dead stop on a steep hill?
@robschaefer43055 жыл бұрын
It definitely depends on the the type/depth of snow, how steep the hill is, and whether or not you have some room on each side. In my experience, after a little wheel spin and lateral movement, the Blizzaks will dig in and hook up on a moderately steep hill in a few inches of untouched snow. The added weight is crucial though. That being said I do my best as a driver to allow space and avoid that scenario. Does that help?
@michaelcruz19965 жыл бұрын
@@robschaefer4305 yes thanks for the response. Do you try and avoid hills when the roads are snowy or you're not too concerned about it? I've driven a RWD for one winter before and have gotten stuck once on a hill. I had no weight in the back tho, just winter tires. I really like the BRZ and only thing thats holding me back is winter driving.
@robschaefer43055 жыл бұрын
@@michaelcruz1996Im in a pretty hilly area and Im confident in all but the worst conditions. As a general rule of thumb, if clearance isn't an issue then hills are not an issue. Coming up to a hill I allow plenty of space in front of me as to maintain speed. Stop and go situation might get a little dicey. Will have to test if I get another snow.

In what region are you located, and do you have a commute/job that requires you to make it in no matter what 100% of the time?
@michaelcruz19965 жыл бұрын
@@robschaefer4305 would be awesome if you could test a stop and go on a snowy hill. I live in Calgary, Canada and we usually get about 2-4 inches of snow during snowfall, rarely do we get more. Based on how you describe it, I shouldn't be too worried about winter driving. I currently drive a subaru legacy b4 with winter tires and I have no problem driving anywhere regardless of how high the snow is.
@detonationpyrotechnics41563 жыл бұрын
Remove the weight. The entire point of snow driving is to remove or reduce as much resistance as possible
@ballathug84043 жыл бұрын
You want more weight to help gain traction when starting from a stop though
@robschaefer43053 жыл бұрын
Yeah Im sure this makes sense in some regards, but adding/changing weight distribution improves grip which is the focus. Hence snow tires with sipes and a softer compound. More friction. Also did three back to back tests with varying weights and more weight, better performance. Results are results.

Tell that to my 2wd 5500lb Silverado, if I didn't put 350+lbs in the bed and run Blizzaks I would be better off walking to work
