Over five years ago, when Toyota was announcing huge plans for their EV market, I was actually excited about it. Now I know it was just a ruse. They even had a foothold in the US market with having a Tundra manufacturing facility already in the US. Even though they had the market virtually cornered with the Prius, they chose to squander it away. They caused their own demise.

Not only are IDRA (owned by a Chinese company) presses essentially bespoke, one of the most complicated parts, that Tesla has put a ton of thought into, are the molds themselves. Tesla was using a lot of send casting to figure out how to optimize and iterate on mold design, before going into production. The have also used a lot of computer modeling to figure out how the molten aluminum should flow through the mold.

Let me be clear: if an automaker cannot make a profit when the entire world is in the process of upgrading from ICE engines to EV motors, they are useless. When consumers upgrade from old tech to new tech, it results in huge boom for the industries concerned. For example: the switch from mainframe computers to PCs was so massive that we're still feeling the effects today; the switch from analogue to digital tech has spawned entire new economies (IT); even the switch from CRT television to flat panels, followed by HD TVs, followed by 4K TVs followed by 8K has rained profits on those manufactures. If the CEOs of auto companies cannot profit from the current environment, they are utterly incompetent.
@nickyoung4799Күн бұрын
A couple of questions arising from your comment. When you say 'the entire world' is transitioning to EVs, are you including Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the former Soviet Union in that? If so, I must beg to differ. I could be wrong, but the technology transitions you mentioned did not require massive government intervention to persuade people to switch to PCs and flat screen TVs. Toyota appears to have played its hand quite cleverly. 'Net zero' is massively unpopular amongst ordinary people, and the US has just flushed it completely. Early adopters and the well off have already got their EVs. The rest of us are either hostile or indifferent, which is why, in the UK, at least, there are thousands of massively discounted electric cars with no buyers. A tiny percentage of these are Toyotas.

This is why they're moving to BYD Hybrid tech and can't develop a competitive EV. Toyota will do fine in legacy markets like the US and Japan, with limited success in the EU, but everywhere else, they're in very big trouble due to how fast the Chinese are moving. Byd/ Toyota claim their Hybrids will have a range of in excess of 2,000 km. So what are the buyers going to choose. Will it be an EV that costs around $50,000 and has an average range 350 km and a charging infrastructure that is not yet in place in Australia, or a Hybrid that costs around $40,000 and has a range of 2,000 km and all the infrastructure is already in place. The EV bubble was short lived…. Who is buying EVs…. madness given their cost and depreciation. They will find there place in the cites and the die hards out there who like a travel challenge

We aren't going to buy ICE , Unless to replace these old ICE thats still running good . The are just waiting for SHTF where no more electricity to charge the EV's . A friend , drive a taxi . Monthly electricity cost for his EV = 200.oo For his Hybrid Camry , 500~600 ,. Gas around 900~1100. He said , The logic is there , Add maintenance cost , Even forrest gump could figure it out after a box of chocolate .

To be fair, ALL EVs are too expensive and the range is too short.
@veganpottertheveganКүн бұрын
The cheapest EVs available in most of the developed west are cheaper than an average new car sale price. Range also often rivals ICE vehicles. Charge time and charger access is the issue but rarely a real issue for 95% of drivers

short for what, you want to drive 350km per day. We are not close yet to providing an EV as substitutes for the all the different ICE vehicles out there, for all the driving scenarios. With city based urban driving, EVs are far superior than ICE, even better if you have a powerpoint at home

@@camsmith4047 I can and will drive +800 miles in a day. Done it many times. But I know a fraction of the population will ever do that once. And it's not like it's normal for me. What car can to that one one tank?😅 I drive a lot, but nearly always, the shorter range Nissan Leaf would be enough for me.

On my 10th Toyota and my third hydrid. Recently the phev. All have been stone cold reliable, Effiecient and good to drive. Recently bought a ford ranger for its tow rating. It’s ok but nowhere near the build quality of a Toyota. Waiting to see how the reliability is…

Toyota thinks globally and most countries have no charging infrastructure. They also knew ev mandates were creating artificial demand and that without subsidies they won't sell. Toyota is the only critically thinking car manufacturer and will still be around long after others have gone. Hybrids were always the way to go.
@WilliamMorfinКүн бұрын
@@marcelstanford430 Except for they were wrong about everything and are now paying the price for it. It turns out a charging infrastructure isn’t that difficult to apply once you invest into it. Considering that renewables and EV’s were the obvious future, that was a fatal miscalculation. Critical thinking should’ve helped you see through the fossil fuel propaganda.
@verygoodbrotherКүн бұрын
And yet Toyota went ahead with hydrogen which has even less infrastructure than EV charging. With EV charging the main issue is fast DC charging, but many have access to slow charging via wall outlet at home (though not for some apartment dwellers).
@WilliamMorfinКүн бұрын
@@verygoodbrother Agreed, installing a lvl 2 charger in my garage was a game changer. The problem is that most people aren’t forward thinking enough to see the changes that EV’s will cause. For one, the entire gas station infrastructure will be almost completely absolute. In its place will be things like wireless passive charging in parking spaces and roadways. Battery and solar panel efficiency will improve enough to make charging almost unnecessary.
@ISuperTedКүн бұрын
If you’re talking about no infrastructure, why did Toyota back Hydrogen? It’s fine having some good Hybrids, which they do, but they completely failed to see how EV’s took off in China and are taking holding in most of the rest of the world. I hope Toyota does well, but their strategy isn’t deep thinking at the moment, it’s playing catch-up.

@@WilliamMorfin Toyota is the number one auto company in the world how are they paying the price. In two years time when all 4 of their new batteries are being produced the plug-in and electric models will explode. The first hybrid battery is now being produced in n. Carolina. The other three will start production in less than 2 years. Toyota will still be at the front of the pack. Don’t be a fool and bet against Toyota.

Whatever vehicle suits your current situation. If you can charge at home, an EV works. If not, get a hybrid. At current US gas prices a Prius is just as inexpensive to fuel as an EV.

People who bought plugin hybrids love the EV part and hate the ICE part and then the ICE part breaks and it is insanely expensive to fix, they would have been better off with an all EV, same story every time
