I'd like to add a tip for anyone attempting this. I finally got the old one off, but it was a real mother breaking the bolts free that held the pulley! I ended up removing the dogbone motor mount thing, then stuck a length of angle iron with the edge between two adjacent bolts and the center shaft that sticks out a bit. Once that was wedged in there, my helper held the angle iron up against where the motor mount bolts on to resist any counter-clockwise torque. However, all my wrenches were rounding over the bolts, and I'm a pretty strong guy. They refused to budge, even with tri-flow, PB blaster, etc. In the end, I had to clamp the bolts with vise grips and turn hard and they broke free. This is a 2005 camry, so those suckers might have been on there for 16 years or so....

Hardest part is breaking the pulley bolts free. Special tool would make it easy but I ended up making a tool out of a paint can opener. Put it in my vice and angled the pry lip down a bit. No much but enough that would act as a hook when I put into the hole in the pulley. Handle end I had to bend into smaller hole because it would open up with the force of my pull. Then I took a small tow strap with hooks and looped it thru end of my paint opener. Looped tow strap couple times around the bottom frame and other end hung on my strut spring. Used my long handled 12mm ratchet wrench to loosen bolts. I had sprayed some blaster previous as well to inside of pulley where bolts came thru. Took some force but each of the 4 bolt busted loose no problem!!! Crazy.

Those pulley bolts caught me off guard as they're pretty dang tight! Figured I would try and increment your approach and break them free with the belt still on. Was a no go. The allen key worked, though I wedged it in a slightly different spot, in front of where you went. Good idea to use 6 point wrenches if you have them to prevent rounding off the nuts. Most 11mm wrenches aren't that long, which makes it tough. I used one that's about 10" long and has an offset. Make sure the wrench is fully seated! I did drain all the coolant, since it's not that hard and seems like best practice. There's a petcock on the radiator and another valve to drain the motor nearby.

The belt just wouldn't hold it tight enough to break the bolts. I even tried a strap wrench that you use for oil filters. In the end I clamped a big vice grip on the pulley. That worked but made some burrs on the pulley. They were very hard to break free.

Hey I Have a question, I used your video to help do water pump job this weeknd. I was able to pull pulley tensioner down to put slack on belt to remove the serpentine belt. Towards the end of completing the job. I went to put on a NEW OEM belt but I could not get the belt on. I tried 3-4 different pulleys to put it on but it was just too tight. I checked old belt and new belt and they both are basically the same length, old belt was just a tad bit longer. We managed to get it on the bottom pulley that’s facing the passenger wheel well with the use of some pry bars and a lot of swearing and struggling , but now the pulley tensioner is maxed out I believe and the belt is on super tight. Is this bad? I don’t understand why if I was able to use the pully tensioner to help release and get the belt off, why wouldn’t I be able to do the same to put the belt on.

IF the coolant is over 5 years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) it's a good idea to drain all the coolant and replace it with approved coolant. If the coolant has been replaced recently, there is no need to drain the whole cooling system.
@panthers5593 жыл бұрын
Depending how musty that coolant is , if u just drain and fill like u said , u still have old coolant in the block , heater core etc , drain and fill is not ideal since you'll be mixing new coolant and contaminating it with old thats still in there , full flush is the way to go .
