I had issues with my Speedometer on my 99 Camry project. The speedometer would begin to bounce and the odometer would begin to flicker and then both would stop working shortly after. Once this occurred the transmission won't shift normally and the torque converter won't go into lock up on the interstate. I spent a lot of time reading and researching and looking on KZbin and couldn't find good information on what was causing the issue. I finally found a repair forum that talked about this issue and what it takes to repair it. I will show in this video, how to remove the cluster and disassemble it, then what you are looking for on the speedometer head. This could be a problem on many Toyota's of that generation, not just the Camry. I haven't proven that at this point, but If yours is having the symptoms that I describe in the video, I would certainly take a look to see if this was the cause.

Excellent video. I appreciate the detailed steps. You saved me a $120 repair bill. I have a 98 Camry with 250K+ miles. Exact same symptoms (intermittent). Car was throwing a P500 error code as well, which I assumed meant the VSS. Tried replacing Speed Sensor first, but that did not fix problem. I saw your video. Ordered part from DigiKey. I purchased the suggested replacement part (4 MHz oscillator, at 47 pF). Manufacturer part# CSTLS4M00G56Z-B0. Had a friend solder in part. Local electronics shop wanted more than the entire instrument cluster was worth to solder in part. Drove car for a while, and no issue so far. Time will tell... You're the BEST!

Just had the same issue. 1999 Camry. On the way home, the speedometer went haywire, transmission felt like it was slipping and the engine light came on all at the same time. Ran it through a scanner and code PO500 came up. Googled the code and searched for answers until I came across your video. Ran through everything you did step by step. It’s been almost 3 weeks since the repair. Thank you so much!! I would’ve taken the mechanics advise of installing a new speed sensor. You saved me so much time and $. Hope someone else that has the same issue can see this video! Thank you sir!

This is precisely why I do these videos. I’m so glad it helped you. When I made this video, I couldn’t find anyone that showed how to repair it, or what was actually happening. I went through many rabbit holes on different forums and found an engineer who had found the problem, but as I said there wasn’t any video on it. In todays fast paced world, many folks don’t have time to chase those rabbits and need an answer quickly. Thanks for watching and commenting.

This is just awesome. Thank you so much for this video and the detailed instructions. I had the VSS conector broken (camry 98), repaired it and didn't work. After almost giving up and buying a cluster, just found this video. Replaced the blue resonator and it fixed both odo and speedometer. You are right, the transmission behaves erratic without the speed signal, it sometimes engages too soon, and sometimes too late. Thank you again, God bless you!

Being that this was really a high end Camry/Avalon platform, it would seem to reason that it would have the same potential components. Please let me know if this rectifies the problem. OMG! Nice Job With This Video! I have been fighting with this problem for the past year and a half. I barely passed my Annual Inspection last year, because my VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) Circuit HAPPENED to work long enough to pass it. God Smiled On Me THAT Time. A month later--it failed again. It worked one day and the next day it wouldn't. It would fail when the engine was cold, and then it would work. Now it is not working at all. i thought that the VSS failed again, so it took it back to the store, because it had a lifetime warranty. I installed the new one, but the problem was still not solved. At the time of this message, I was looking online for an electrical diagram, to try and decifer this problem. I found the Toyota Forum you talked about and was directed to another video and then YOUR video. I am SO GLAD I DID. Thanks to YOU, I will be able to do this job and probably have this problem solved. THANK YOU SO MUCH! GOD BLESS YOU!

Alright, let me update my info about this issue. When I replaced the whole assembly cluster it made the check engine light go away. I had the check engine light on. I did everything i could but nothing fix my problem. I bought one at the junk yard and installed it. It's running great without any issues. So those issues can make the check engine light turn on. The code that I had was P0500 VSS. I didn't find the answer for my problem here but it did help me a lot. Thanks

@@RealWorldGarage I thought had this problem fixed in my 99 Camry 4 cyl about 2 months ago at 91,000 original miles. The car worked perfectly until a few days ago, when at 93,550, the intermittent problem returned. Blank odometer, pushing the trip stem to resume drive-ability... aggravating limp mode has returned. I did buy 10 of the recommended resonators for $5., but it looks like there's an issue in addition to the resonator. Thoughts, RWG? many thanks for your great work. SAL

SAL R make sure the solder joints are solid?? Like I said in the video, I’m not into electronics repair. That’s why I had someone I know who does it day in and day out, solder it back on the board. If you are familiar with that then I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. I don’t think loss of the speed sensor signal will stop the odometer from coming on. You may check to see that all of the screws are tight that secure the speedo head to the cluster. It may also be a break in the printed circuit.
@RealWorldGarage
@RealWorldGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Here’s also another thought too, the original components were Denso, the replacements we are using are unknown quality from China. I guess it could be possible that the new one failed, if all the stuff I mentioned above checks out, try installing another one and see. Please keep me advised. I certainly don’t know everything, I’m always looking to learn something new.

@@RealWorldGarage A wiz-friend put the third resonator in 3 days ago, checking the whole board. I drove the car about 30 miles over 2 days with no issues. The car didn't go 5 minutes today and the odometer crapped out again. I now believe part of the issue is heat on the cluster, possibly compromising the Chinese parts. The car was parked in the shade on the days I drove it. Then, after sitting in 90d heat/sun all day on day 3, trouble came quickly for my son. I'm done. Time to send it to a pro shop that specializes in cluster repair. Defeat is such a bitter pill. I'll keep you posted.

I performed this repair on my 1997, 3.0 liter V6 Camry. The problem manifested itself in August 2019, while I was driving home from work. At that time, I was able to drive the vehicle about two weeks before the problem would re-occur. I watched this video in early June. At that time. I was able to drive the vehicle a maximum of fifteen miles before the problem re-occurred. I was able to remove the old resistor and solder the new one in myself. Very interesting, i’ve been at this for quite some time as well.. My 2000 Camry 4-cylinder, has the same shifting problems. I thought it was the speed sensor, ordered one, same issues shifting. Checked all the wiring, nothing changed. My difference is that my speedometer has always worked, same with the odometer during this problem. But the symptoms everyone has described is exactly the same. I know the speed sensor is sending a signal to the cluster. The problem is that It’s just not leaving the cluster to inform everything else, ECM, cruise control, and transmission. I looked for the part you have listed, it’s no longer available.. any recommendations would be much appreciated.. thanks, I enjoyed the video..

Hi RWG. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to create this video. It's a very informative, very well edited and thought provoking. I recently purchased a 2000 Camry for my daughter-in-law. I drove the car about 300 miles to deliver it and the next morning started experiencing the same issues you are having. One question you didn't address in your video. Did your 10 amp "gauge" fuse blow each time you experienced this problem? As you know, that fuse is located next to the steering wheel (in the fuse box to the left). If that fuse is blowing, couldn't that be caused by a short on that same circuit? I've also read in some other posts that sometimes the connections at the cluster can get funky after 20 years and cleaning them up with electrical grease can help. Any thoughts on that? Anyway, thank you again for doing such a great job. Very kind of you.

While I have not experienced what you are describing, I’ve known others who have. It is likely a failed safety neutral switch causing the fuse to blow.

@RealWorldGarage
@RealWorldGarage Жыл бұрын
If you mean that the display of the mileage is very dark?? That is probably a failed LCD display screen. This won’t fix that. This just fixes if the numbers begin to disappear and then the transmission begins to shift weird. I’ve found that it needs to have all of the symptoms I note in the video for this repair to work. If the display dark you may need to source one from a wrecking yard or maybe eBay.

@RealWorldGarage

If the car isn’t shifting erratically, I would say that the PCM is getting the signal through the speed o meter. Some other component in the gauge cluster or speed o meter head has likely failed. If you are handy at all, I would say go to a junk yard and pull one out of another 2002 with same engine transmission combination, and install it and see if it comes back to life.

Mine reads fine from full tank down to about half but stops reading below that level and stays stuck at half tank. I already swapped out the fuel sending unit and tested the resistance from the float and it works fine from around 4 ohms to around 115 ohms. So my guess is my actual fuel gauge is bad. I’ve asked a few people that have posted about fixing theirs, where they got the part. At the time of this filming and posting it was available through Digikey. Things changed due to supply chain issues during and after the pandemic. So it has become harder to find. As cheap as the component is, I’d suggest buying a few and store in a cool dry place. For future repairs. It’s possible that another failure to the dash cluster could happen and you’d have to get a used cluster and end up with another failed speed o meter that would need this part.

If you have identified the components in the cluster and they look the same as the 90’s - 2001?? You disassemble it like I show and it has to be de-soldiered from the board and a new one installed. Thanks for your reply. The 2002-2006 instrument cluster has a single face, with speedo, tach, fuel and temp shafts penetrating it and with their needles to show speed, etc. Can the needles be pulled off without damaging things? If so, the whole metal display backing should lift off. That should expose the entire front of the circuit board.
@searockhills759
@searockhills759 2 жыл бұрын
The Camry Gen-5 (2002-2006) instrument clusters are different. Everything is on a single circuit board with a thin metal face showing speed, tach, gas and temp. Unlike the cluster you show, there are no screws in the back, so the speedometer section can't be removed separately.

That stinks, I guess when they changed generations they made some major changes. The ceramic oscillator could be the same though. As far as the disassembly of yours I can’t say for sure. The 4 needle motors are showing on the back, but removing the needles by itself won't solve the problem. Since I have not seen one of these, I cannot say one way or the other. If your odometer is going blank and the car is giving the same symptoms, I would be inclined to believe this is the same problem. It isn’t usually difficult to remove the gauge cluster, if you can do that and see if it has the same components as the Camry it is a very cheap fix. So you could try it and even if it doesn’t fix the problem, it won’t cost much to try. Any reputable electronics repair shop can soldier this component in for you, it shouldn’t cost much, it took about 10 minutes for the folks I used to do it. I supplied the part. I found it in a video dedicated just to that, and I fixed the neighbor’s car! I had ordered the part last week and it came in Saturday. Speedometer and odometer went out a while ago, and then it started shifting badly, so I got the codes read and it said speed sensors, but I looked into it further online and saw that it was actually likely to be a ceramic resistor. Especially since the car was in Texas when the speedometer and odometer went out. So I bought the resistor, took the speedometer assembly out and soldered the new resistor in. The odometer lit right up! First time in years. Speedometer works! They were using a digital box that plugs into the cigarette lighter and works off satellite lol and it’s shifting WAY better. I’m thrilled, especially since a licensed mechanic was sh*tting all over me for choosing to change the resistor instead of the speed sensor. He said “lol” and then when I asked him why it was funny, he said it was speed sensors. What an *ss. I won’t take any cars to him.
